Fabiano Caruana won AAI Grandmasters Chess tournament By : INVC Team Published On : 6 Jul, 2011 12:00 AM IST INVC,, Delhi,, Fabiano Caruana, winner of the AAI Grandmasters Chess tournament received his trophy from Mr. V P Agrawal, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, at a glittering closing ceremony of the tournament at the AAI Officers' Institute, New Delhi on Saturday. Airports Authority of India, a leading Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, organised “AAI International Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2011”, which featured six of the most promising young talents in the game from all over the world. Keeping pace with other high-profile events globally, the tournament offered a total prize money worth US $ 24,500. The winner takes $ 8,000, while the runner-up received $ 6,000. Speaking on the occasion, Shri V P Agrawal, Chairman, AAI said “The game was given to the world by India and we also have the world champion from India - Viswanathan Anand. So it is only logical that the AAI supports an endeavour which showcases India’s ancient game and young talent from around the world”. The AAI has been supporting various games and young sportspersons, including chess. Parimarjan Negi, the current National champion, and who has broken many records and Dronavalli Harika among women are supported by AAI. Shri Bharat Singh Chauhan, President, Delhi Chess Association, supporting the event said “We are proud to have been associated with such a high standard event which has been a treat for chess lovers in Delhi". The tournament, which started on June 21, came to a close after a gala dinner hosted at the AAI Officers Club on July 02, 2011. Junior Four Nations League - a report by Mike Truran This season’s competition was bigger and better than ever, with teams of all ages competing over three weekends in two separate divisions. Like its senior equivalent, the Junior Four Nations Chess League (J4NCL) has the advantage of taking place in excellent qual- ity playing conditions in premier hotels across the UK. This season’s competition took place at Barcelo UK’s flagship Hinckley Island Hotel, so parents could also have a relaxing week- end away at a top four-star hotel while their children locked horns over the chess board. Grandmaster Repertoire 1.e4 vs The French, Caro-Kann & Philidor By Parimarjan Negi Quality Chess www.qualitychess.co.uk Series Introduction Several years ago, Nigel Short once gifted me an opening book with the wry comment, “I expect this doubles your chess library.” While that was a slight exaggeration, it is true that I never depended much on opening books for my theoretical knowledge. This scepticism for written material is often rooted in the fact that the modern openings are so fluid, constantly changing, with variations evolving every week. How can a static book keep pace with ideas that are developed, replaced, and forgotten on a weekly basis? In this series, I aim to provide a foundation and structure around which you can develop a lifelong repertoire with 1.e4. I hope a good number of my recommendations will withstand the relentless assaults of time, but I am realistic enough to know that many of the bright novelties and variations will eventually wither away. However, even if some of the finer details will eventually have to be revised in the future, I believe that the core selection of recommended lines will remain valid for a long time to come. There is a process by which I have developed my own repertoire, as laid out in this series. In several critical positions I have discussed the pros and cons of different options, and explained why I eventually chose one over the other. Apart from remembering the moves themselves, I hope you will also absorb something of this process, so that you will be able to find your own ideas to react to whatever new developments may come along.

Narlikar declines to be part of UGC search panel The search committee, set up by the Human Resource Development Ministry for identifying a chairperson for the University Grants Commission (UGC), has been unable to meet as one of the experts approached by the Ministry has declined the offer. The OECD‘s PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2012 tested more than 510,000 students in 65 countries and economies on maths, reading and science. The main focus was on maths. Highlights of the Survey Report :- * Asian nations cemented their top positions in an eagerly awaited report on global education , as their students continued to outshine western counterparts in maths, science and reading. * Shanghai again ranked first in maths, science and reading . * Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea rounded out the top five in maths skills. * Already strong performers in 2009, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore continued to improve their performances in the three categories. * The report highlighted Italy, Poland and Portugal for showing improvements in maths skills since the last survey ,but noted drops in Sweden and Finland. * Peru ranked at the bottom of the list in all three categories. * 23 per cent of students in OECD countries, and 32 per cent overall, failed to master the simplest maths problems.Boys performed better than girls in maths. They scored higher in 37 out of the 65 countries and economies, while girls outperformed boys in 5 countries. * Across OECD countries, 8.4% of students are top performers in reading. Shanghai-China has the largest proportion of top performers – 25.1%.
