Marathi actor Girish Kulkarni bagged the Best Actor award for the movie ‘Deool’ while movie ‘I Am’ was declared Best Hindi Film. On the other hand, Kannada film Byari and Marathi film Devur were named the Best Feature Films. It is noteworthy here that Byari is the first film in the Beary language, spoken in coastal Karnataka. Brief Notes HOMAGE TO MAX MUELLER IN CHENNAI Main Feature PRESENTATIONS OF MUSIC, DANCE & DRAMA Back o' & Feedback Form Max Mueller Bhavan (German Cultural Institute) in Chennai organised a clutch of Sruti - Issue 197 cultural programmes and a seminar during 28-30 November 2000 to mark the death February 2001 centenary of Max Mueller, a great Indologist. Born in 1823, Mueller died when he was 77. Mueller is remembered for stimulating widespread interest in Indology, mythology, philosophy, comparative religion, linguistics and social criticism. The special cultural relations between India and Germany are largely attributed to his works. Mueller never visited India. But, had he come to India, he would likely have sought the company of musicians and scholars in the field of the performing arts, considering that he wanted to become a musician and belonged to a family that considered music and poetry a way of life. His first love was indeed music which he would have taken up as a profession but for the unfavourable climate for such a pursuit in his days. The famous Indologist is best known all over the world for the publication of the Sacred Books of the East (51 volumes), amongst several other works. He was an ardent promoter of Indian independence and cultural self-assertion. Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai, entrusted Ludwig Pesch, a German who has spent years learning and studying Carnatic music, with the task of planning a befitting programme of tribute in Chennai in the wider context of a major German festival under way in India.

Among others: Irfan Ul Haq, 37 was sentenced to 50 months in prison on 5 January, for providing false documentation and attempting to smuggle a suspected Taliban member into the USA. On 5 January, Eyad Rashid Abu Arja, 47, a male Palestinian with dual Australian-Jordanian nationality, was sentenced to 30 months in prison in Israel for aiding Hamas. On 6 January, a bomb exploded in Damascus, Syria killing 26 people and wounding 63 others. ETA militant Andoni Zengotitabengoa, was sentenced on 6 January to 12 years in prison for the illegal possession of weapons, as well car theft, falsification of documents, assault and resisting arrest. On 9 January, Sami Osmakac, 25, was charged with plotting to attack crowded locations in Florida, USA. On 10 January, a car bomb exploded at a bus stand outside a shopping bazaar in Jamrud, northwestern Pakistan killing 26 people and injuring 72. Jermaine Grant, 29, a British man and three Kenyans were charged on 13 January in Mombasa, Kenya with possession of bomb-making materials and plotting to explode a bomb. On 13 January Thai police arrested Hussein Atris, 47, a Lebanese-Swedish man, who was suspected of having links to Hizballah. He was charged three days later with the illegal possession of explosive materials. On 14 January, a suicide bomber, disguised in a military uniform, killed 61 people and injured 139, at a checkpoint outside Basra, Iraq.

Mhaske Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, VJTI, Mumbai-400019, Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT Verandha Ghat Section is connecting shield-plateau region with Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB) through Bhor Ghat area. Therefore, it is considered as a lifeline of Bhor (in Pune district) and Mahad (Raigarh District of Konkan), of western Maharashtra corridor. Geologically, this region belongs to Ambenali and Mahabaleshwar – Poladpur formation. The area shows thick flows of the Deccan Trap basalt of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age. All the rock flows of this formation, exposed along this highway are in the form of rock cutting along the Pandharpur-Mahad Maharashtra State Highway -70, in the 74 km Ghat section from Bhor (part of Sahyadri Uplands, from Pune district) onwards and before Mahad (part of Konkan Coastal Belt from Raigarh district) of Maharashtra, are highly susceptible for landslide activity. A detailed exploration was carried out on all along the road section started from Bhor city and it extends up to the Varandah village, at the foot hill of Sahyadri, in Konkan region. In the present context, detailed investigations of the mass movement were carried out to prepare the map of highly vulnerable locations, in the study area.
