The development of night tourism is one of the crucial means to enrich and prosper the night-time economy. Recently, as a popular topic of sustainable development, night tourism has received extensive attention. However, little attention has been paid to night tourism, especially from the emotional perspective of tourists. Furthermore, discussions on how and why tourists become interested in night tourism are still lacking. To fill the research gap, based on the theory of experience economy, we used the concept of lovemarks to explore the influence of tourists’ tourism experience and lovemarks on their brand satisfaction and brand loyalty. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 487 tourists of “Cultural Heritage Night”, a night tourism brand in South Korea. The results indicate that tourists’ entertainment and educational experience significantly influence their lovemarks (both of brand love and respect), and esthetic experience only significantly influences brand respect.

  • Jeonju Is a Historic City in Korea
SUSTAINABLE CITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH TRADITIONAL CULTURE REVITALIZATION 1. Context Jeonju is a historic city in Korea. As the city where government agencies were located during the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonju became the center of politics, economic, and culture power of the Jeolla area. After experiencing government-led economic development and consequent urbanization, Jeonju has grown into a large city with over 650,000 people. 1 However, Jeonju was relatively alienated from the rapid industrialization and economic growth of country. It needed an economic drive through which to promote local development. Korea’s adoption of the “local autonomy” system in the 1990s, led local governments to pursue a new set of local development policies. Jeonju, facing a lack of industrial infrastructure, prioritized policies based on traditional cultural resources a. A series of events led to Jeonju’s implementation of the Traditional Culture City Project. In 1977, Jeonju designated an area with a heavy concentration of traditional buildings as the Traditional Architecture Preservation Zone (Jeonju Hanok Village). The construction limitation that came with the designation resulted in many residents leaving the. Residents began to demand the removal of the Traditional Architecture Preservation Zone designation, which was finally removed in 1995. From then, the area began to attract new modern buildings. Local, cultural, and artistic experts raised the need to preserve traditional culture and demanded the re-designation of the area as a preservation zone. Property rights of residents collided with the need to preserve traditional culture, leading to serious discussions about policies on traditional culture within the local community and led to a series of policies that protected residents’ property rights while preserving traditional buildings.

  • Gwangdaejeon in Jeonju, an Innovative Strategy in Pansori Popularization
EXPLORING A TRADITION IDENTITY: GWANGDAEJEON IN JEONJU, AN INNOVATIVE STRATEGY IN PANSORI POPULARIZATION A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC AUGUST 2017 By Hae In Lee Thesis Committee: Byong Won Lee, Chairperson Frederick Lau Young-A Park ABSTRACT Gwangdaejeon (Battle of the Clowns) was a local North Jeolla province television show that premiered in 2012 and ended in 2015, with later seasons being broadcast throughout Korea. This program’s motto was to revive the traditional pansori stage which thrived around Jeonju, the state capital of the North Jeolla province. The show was filmed in hanok (traditional Korean house) village, a historical recreation of a traditional house town in Jeonju. Gwangdaejeon was a competition for the master pansori singers, myeongchang. Gwangdaejeon follows the structure of reality popular song competition programs, which are already familiar to the public. These programs are categorized into two types: amateur and professional competitions. The former centers on auditions for novices who want to become stars, for example, Superstar K. The latter are competitions, such as I am a Singer, exclusively feature professional experts. Gwangdaejeon was similar to I am a Singer, but for myeongchang. This thesis explores the ways a television show contributes to the promotion of Korean traditional music. While Korean pop culture, such as K-pop and TV dramas, are gaining huge popularity all over the world, pansori, an example of Korean traditional vocal music, is disregarded by the majority of Koreans even though it has cultural value.
