  • TOTO Bio (PDF)
TOTO Bio Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members’ imprint can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with 225 Grammy nominations. Band members were South Park characters, while Family Guy did an entire episode on the band's hit "Africa." As a band, TOTO sold 35 million albums, and today continue to be a worldwide arena draw staging standing room only events across the globe. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles, and 35 years in to a career enjoy a multi-generational fan base. It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world's population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO. The list of those they individually collaborated with reads like a who's who of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, alongside the biggest names in music. The band took a page from their heroes The Beatles playbook and created a collective that features multiple singers, songwriters, producers, and multi-instrumentalists. Guitarist Steve Lukather aka Luke has performed on 2000 albums, with artists across the musical spectrum that include Michael Jackson, Roger Waters, Miles Davis, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Don Henley, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick and many more. His solo career encompasses a catalog of ten albums and multiple DVDs that collectively encompass sales exceeding 500,000 copies.

Konstnärligt examensarbete Västkustskt En studie kring westcoastmusikens byggstenar Författare: Jonathan Eryd Handledare: Anders Rydholm, Karin Hallgren & Karin Larsson Eriksson Examinator: Patrik Ahlm (Lektor) Termin: VT16 Ämne: Musik Nivå: Kandidat Kurskod: 2MU80E West Coasty - Västkustskt Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine if there are any specific patterns regarding how a westcoast song might be constructed, and how one might use those patterns to write their own songs. The study was performed by analyzing westcoast songs from the period of 1978-82, sheet music as well as sounding material. Interviews with prominent writers and producers of the era, as well as of today has been conducted for an insight on their view. The results show similarities not so much of theoretical, but of sound aspects. Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library JIMMY DILLON An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2015 © 2015 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of Jimmy Dillon INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 36 pages INTERVIEW DATE: October 26th, 2015 In this musically infused and engagingly narrated oral history, guitarist, songwriter, and musical educator Jimmy Dillon recounts his devotion to music since the age of 12 when he decided he wanted to be a guitarist. Born in 1951 in Los Angeles, “in the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll,” Jimmy moved to Michigan with his family as a teenager, where he started gigging with his first band, The Fugitives. In 1969, after finishing high school, he moved back to California with his sister Chloe, settling in Sausalito. Jimmy dates his “love affair with Marin County” back to this moment. He recalls the music scene of the early 1970s in San Francisco and Marin, as well as his own first bona fide Marin band, The Edge. Jimmy recounts his 20-year musical relationship with Clarence Clemons and his deep love of the blues, which prompted him to write a play (or “bluesical”) entitled Ascension of the Blues, documenting the West African origins of the blues, its maturation in the United States, and subsequent diffusion throughout the world. Throughout this oral history, Jimmy describes how his career in music has taken him around the world, how he moved back to Michigan and later to Maui, but how, through all these migrations and displacements, Mill Valley — and Mt.

  • EARTH, WIND & FIRE -‐ Bio XRIJF JUNE 20-‐28, 2014 During the 1970S
EARTH, WIND & FIRE - Bio During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African- American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. It certainly was successful, as EWF combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and '70s multicultural spiritualism. "I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before," Maurice explains. "Although we were basically jazz musicians, we played soul, funk, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and dance music...which somehow ended up becoming pop. We were coming out of a decade of experimentation, mind expansion and cosmic awareness. I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force- feeding listeners' spiritual content." Maurice was born December 19, 1941, in Memphis, TN. He was immersed in a rich musical culture that spanned the boundaries between jazz, gospel, R&B, blues and early rock. All of these styles played a role in the development of Maurice's musical identity. At age six, he began singing in his church's gospel choir but soon his interest turned to percussion. He began working gigs as a drummer while still in high school. His first professional performance was with Booker T. Jones, who eventually achieved stardom as Booker T and the MGs.

  • Will Minting - Jay Graydon Interview December 18, 2005
Will Minting - Jay Graydon interview December 18, 2005 Jay Graydon may not be known to each and everyone, but to all lovers of quality music he is known as one of the A-1 guitar players and songwriters of all time in music history. Together with producer/songwriter and long time pal David Foster he is also known to die-hard fans in Europe and Asia as the co-founder of "Westcoast Music". This music genre has its roots in the late 70s, and is also labeled Adult Contemporary Pop Music or AOR for short. As Ray Jackson helped out Jay to enter the session world in Los Angeles very successfully, Jay did the same with Steve Lukather. Read Jay's memories in this very open interview. Jay Graydon is a legendary Los Angeles based studio musician, session guitarist, writer and producer. When other studio legends had tried and failed to meet Donald Fagan & Walter Becker's seemingly impossible expectations, Jay famously nailed the Peg solo on Steely Dan's Aja album. Jay won a Grammy for his co- writing of Turn your love around with Luke and Bill Champlin, which became one of George Benson's biggest hits. Jay was instrumental in getting Luke started on the session scene in the mid 1970's when he recommended his own clients to the teenage Lukather, who as we know rapidly emerged as an equal to the likes of Jay, Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Ray Parker Jnr, Lee Ritenour and other legendary studio guitarists. Joseph Williams and Steve Porcaro have also worked extensively with Jay in recent years.
