He finished fifth in the SLC in scoring (15.7), second in three-pointers made (77) and 12th in three-point percentage (38.9%). Hebroke the UCA single-season record for threes by a freshman (Marcus Pillo, 68, 2006-07). His total of 77 was fourth-best in school history behind Rodney Dean (94, 1998-99), Robert Crawford (85, 2012-13) and Dean again with 79 (1997-98). Howard had highs of 27 points (vs. Northwestern State), 6 rebounds (vs. Coastal Carolina), 7 assists (vs. Omaha) and 6 three-pointers made (vs. NWST). Howard played a team-high 33.7 minutes per game, all with a knee injury that required surgery after the season. √ REDSHIRTING: With the addition of three transfers who sat out last season, the Bears’ coaching staff is redshirting four players who saw considerable action a year ago. Those include sophomore guard Thatch Unruh, sophomore forward Otas Iyekekpolor, sophomore guard Tyler Simmons and junior forward Ethan Lee. Unruh averaged 6.3 points and made 42 three-pointers (second on the team) as a true freshman, starting 19 of 25 games. Lee averaged 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 26 games, while Iyekekpolor averaged 0.8 points and 0.7 rebounds in 23 games. Simmons, a walk-on, played in 10 games last season. √ Parlez-vous français: The Bears took a 10-day trip to France in August, playing four games against semi-professional teams. They beat the only team that beat them the very next night to finish with a 3-1 record for the trip. COACH RUSS PENNELL: “It has helped immensely. This is my third experience taking a team overseas, the first two times as an assistant coach. We got to practice 10 extra days prior to going and then we had four games over there. We played very well. A much different looking team than we had last year. “And I think the biggest benefits we are seeing now is that, when we started practice on Oct. 5th, we already had our system put infromthe summer. So our 30 days of practice before the first game will be spent on primarily just getting better at what we’re doing. There havenotbeen a lot of new things added. You can do that once every four years, and you need to springboard off that. And I think we’ve taken advantage of that so far.’

√ CLASSROOM SUCCESS: The Bears had a 3.1 cumulative grade-point average for the 2014-15 school year, the highest in some time for the men’s program. Ten of the 11 Bears were enrolled at UCA for the first time in the fall semester, and seven were taking college courses for the firsttime. Ten players had at least a 3.0 GPA. The Bears, however, still face APR (Academic Progress Rate) penalties from the previous regime and are ineligible for postsesason play again this season. √ THE SCHEDULE: UCA will play no non-Division I teams this season, per head coach Russ Pennell’s preference. The Bears have a formidable non- conference schedule that features games at Tulsa (Nov. 14), UMass (Nov. 19), Rutgers (Nov. 21), Oklahoma (Dec. 3) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 6), along with in-state rivalries with Arkansas State (Dec. 22) and Little Rock (Dec. 1 and Dec. 16). The Bears will play only one home game the first semester, on Dec. 16 against Little Rock. Nine of their first 10 games will be on theroadthis season. UCA will play schools from seven different conferences during the non-conference portion of its schedule, including the American Athletic Conference, Big 12, Sun Belt, Atlantic 10, Big 10, Atlantic Coast Conference and Conference USA. The Southland Conference schedule kicks off on Jan. 2 when the Bears host Abilene Christian at the Farris Center. √ THE SCHEDULE II: The games at UMass and Rutgers were part of the MGM Grand “Men Who Speak Up” Main Event tournament. After that two-game road trip, UCA traveled to Las Vegas to take on UT-San Antonio on Nov. 23. The win over UTSA put the Bears against Howard in the Middleweight Division championship game at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The tournament is centered around an awareness campaign urging men to speak up about prostate cancer. √ PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE: The Bears were picked 12th out of 13 teams in the Southland Conference preseason polls by the coaches and sports information directors. UCA had no players named to the preseason All-SLC teams, despite Jordan Howard being the reigning SLC Freshman of the Year.

√ TV GAMES: Twenty SLC basketball games are set for the league’s television package for 2015-16. UCA’s game at Nicholls State on Jan. 23 is included in the list and will be shown on ESPN3. The SLC TV package includes games on ESPN3, ESPN2, the American Sports Network and watchespn online. In addition, games featuring SLC schools will be carried on Big Ten Network, CBS Sports Network, ESPNU, Fox College Sports, Fox Sports Net, Fox Sports 1, Longhorn Network, Pac-12 Network, ROOT Sports Southwest and SEC Network. √ AROUND THE SLC: The SLC returns six of the top 10 scorers from last season, including UCA sophomore guard Jordan Howard, who was fifth at 15.7 points per game... SLC teams will play 48 non-conference games against teams that played in postseason tournaments, including the NCAA, NIT, CollegeInsiders.com and College Basketball Invitational. √ ASSIST MAN: New head coach Russ Pennell is in the UCA record books from his days as a point guard for the Bears. Pennell, who only played two seasons at UCA (1982-84), is still the career assist leader with 341 assists. His career average of 5.9 per game is also best in school history. Pennell’s 220 assists during the 1983-84 season is second-best, while his 7.6 average that same season remains No. 1. Pennell, who played one season at UCA alongside NBA great Scottie Pippen, averaged 7.4 points per game in his two seasons at UCA and shot 52.6 from the field and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line.
