What is the meaning of those symbols?

Alpha Brotherhood 1911

Omega Ladies’ Aid 1911

The Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet. The Omega is the last.

Jesus says to John, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Rev: 22:13)

Traditionally these two letters are the sign of Christ.

Psalm 91 Rev. and Mrs. P. T. Hughston [Rev. Hughston was never pastor in Trumansburg. He had a home here, and he served in Mecklenburg, Townsendville, Odessa, Catharine, and Sheldrake.]

Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on

him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,

whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

10 Commandments Rev. and Mrs. J. G. Clark [Rev. Clark was never a pastor in Trumansburg; he may have had family here.]

The Ten Commandments

You shall have no other Gods but me. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. Respect your father and mother. You must not commit murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.

First letters (iota-eta-sigma) of the name Jesus in Greek

Anchor Charles W. and Emma C. MacMurray, by their children

Restoration* “In Loving Memory of Marty Jager, Richard Root, and Glenn Walter”

The anchor was an early Christian symbol commonly found in the Roman catacombs as a symbol of the hope we have in Christ beyond this life, and is a

fitting inscription for a Christian tomb.

Anchor Continued:

From this verse: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 6:19-20)

Sheaf of Wheat Herman C. and Jennie Clock, by their children

Restoration* “In Loving Memory of Our Fathers, Howard W. Purdy and Robert L. Terry”

A symbol of plenty: Psalm 126:6, "He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” Bringing in the Sheaves

Also eternal life: So, symbolically, a sheaf of wheat is used by Christians to mark the passing of a fellow Christian. Death is not the end but the beginning of life eternal. The mature grain in the sheaf is the direct symbol of the Resurrection. The life beyond the grave, the fulfillment of the Promises of Jesus Christ.

Also implies bread: John 6:35, Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Cross and Esther Farr, by her children

Restoration* “Restoration in memory of Sister: Francis McKnight Dushatinski,” by Jean Smith and Betty McKnight

The crown represents royal power with the empty symbolizing Christ’s resurrection. This means that Christ is of royal blood and king.

Open Book Henry H. and Florence E. Rumsey, by their children

Restoration* “In Loving Memory of Christie J. (deLyser) Streb, 1959-1992”

Symbolizes the “word of God” both as the scriptures and as Christ, the logos (word) of God.

Lamp Tompkins [Rev. W.S. Tompkins was pastor in Trumansburg from 1911-1913.]

Restoration* “In Loving Memory of Elsie W. Cooper Borden” Given by Madison A. Borden and Family

Christ, the light of the world. Matthew 5:14-16, New International Version (NIV): “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Also the word of God. Psalm 119:105, King James Version (KJV): “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
