  • Recording in Co. Wexford (H12) During 2010
RECORDING IN CO. WEXFORD (H12) DURING 2010 Paul R. Green, Yoletown, Ballycullane, New Ross, Co. Wexford E-mail: [email protected] 2010 has been a strange year as I was out of action for much of the first half of the year with a slipped disc. The second half of the year seemed to have made up for it with a good number of records. A total of 16,126 records were added to Mapmate the database I use to computerise all the counties records. The strangest thing of the year was seeing two plants of Ficaria verna subsp. verna (Bulbiferous Celendine) flowering on 22 August in a ditch at Kiltra (S85.10). I gave up the idea of filling in forms for Corn Marigolds for the Threatened Plants Projects, as 2010 seemed to be the year of the ‘Corn Marigold’ in Co. Wexford, as they were so common, turning many cultivated fields yellow. If I had been given a Euro for each Corn Marigold I saw I could have taken early retirement! DBN = cited specimens deposited in the National Herbarium, Glasnevin, Dublin. Besides myself the following have also contributed during the year: Dominic Berridge gave me a number of records including a report of Crassula helmsii (New Zealand Pigmyweed) from a Kettlehole at Ballyvalloo (T11.30) shown to him by the land owner Kevin Murphy and later to me, not a welcome addition to the county; Frankie Tennant and Roy Watson were the largest contributors during the year, sending in records from many parts of the county; besides coming out with me several times Jenny Seawright added Papaver pseudoorientale (Oriental Poppy) to the county list; Megan Morris did her year bird count at Caim (S90.40) and made a plant list including the first county record for Bromus hordeaceus subsp.

  • Soils of Co. Carlow
Soil Survey Bulletin No. 17 Soils of Co. Carlow by M. J. Conry and Pierce Ryan National Soil Survey of Ireland An Foras Taluntais (THE AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE) Published by an Foras Taluntais, 33 Merrion Road, Dublin 4. Price: Thirty Shillings FOREWORD The programme of the National Soil Survey for determining the fundamental characteristics of Irish soils and for mapping their distribution was initiated shortly after An Foras Taliintais commenced activities in 1958. Its primary aim is to develop an inventory of our soil resources as a basis for rational land-use planning. The main activities of this survey are being carried out on a county basis. When introducing the first of the reports in the county series—that covering the Soils of County Wexford—the role of soil survey in agricultural development, and indeed in general planning activities, was outlined. Carlow, although small in extent, is one of the most important agricultural areas in the country. It is also a county of contrasts, in its general landscape features, in its soils and in its agriculture. The rolling lowlands of the extensive central portion of the county are dominated by deep, well-drained fertile soils. These are devoted to mixed farming with a high proportion of tillage and a fair concentration of live stock, principally dairy cattle and sheep. The hills associated mainly with the Castlecomer Plateau consist of physically difficult and mostly poorly drained soils. Here livestock farming is at a low to moderately intensive level and forestry is being extended. On the steeply sloping flanks of the Blackstairs Mountains, which carry degraded mineral soils on the lower slopes and peats at the higher elevations, the emphasis is on sheep raising mostly at low intensity levels, and forestry is proving a useful alternative form of land use.

The 1916 Rising and County Wexford Introduction The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack is an introduction to County Wexford’s contribution to the uprising of that year. It offers information on many aspects: causes and context, a timeline of events, the aftermath, profiles of some local leaders, the role of women, and arts and literature inspired by the Rising, among others. Extracts from original documents of the period - letters, newspaper accounts, and witness statements are included. The selection provides a flavour of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Ireland and in County Wexford. It is intended to encourage and enable students to embark on further study. The pack includes references for all sources quoted and offers guidance to sources and resources for further research. The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack cannot and does not attempt to tell the story of the Rising in its entirety. Rather, it introduces the reader to the wealth of information available in primary sources - an essential starting point for all reliable research- and in books, websites and other e-sources. The pack focuses in particular on local supports - the materials in the Wexford Studies Collections located on the top floor of the County Library in Mallin St., Wexford town, and in the Wexford County Archive collections in Ardcavan, Wexford. While every effort is made here to offer as current a resource as possible, you are directed also to the Council’s website for the 2016 Commemorations, www.enniscorthy1916.ie which will be updated beyond the print date of this publication.
