144 DIVISION I Wrestling DIVISION I 2002 Championships Highlights Gophers Golden Again: In the end, Cael Sanderson was perfect. The Iowa State senior completed his record-setting college career by win- ning his 159th match without a loss, claiming his fourth-straight NCAA title. The 197-pound Sanderson caught Jon Trenge by the ankle, turned it into a double-leg takedown and put the Lehigh sophomore straight to his back for a near fall, going on to score a 12-4 major decision. More than 13,000 fans at Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York, gave Sanderson a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes. The champi- onship was held March 22-24. Oklahoma State's Pat Smith, who had five losses in his career, is the only other four-time NCAA champion. In the team race, Minnesota won with 1261/2 points after taking the title last season. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. And underdog Myles Martin, an Ohio State freshman from nearby Penns Grove, New Jersey, had the highlight of the night in beating Penn State’s Bo Nickal. During his prep and college careers, Gable compiled an unbelievable record of 182-1. He was undefeated in 64 prep matches and was 118-1 at Iowa State. Dan won three state titles at Waterloo West and two NCAA titles at Iowa State. He was a three-time All American and a three-time Big Eight champion for the Cyclones. Gable earned national fame in 1972 when he won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. On the way to the gold, Gable never gave up a point to any of his opponents. After completing his college eligibility, Gable added three titles from the Pan-American Games, the Tbilisi Tournament, and the World Championships. Gable won an unprecedented six Midlands championships and was the meet’s outstanding wrestler five times. As the University of Iowa’s all-time winningest coach, Dan Gable compiled a career record of 355-21-5, all at Iowa. He coached 152 All-Americans, 45 national Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and 10 Olympians, including four gold medalists. Gable was named to the United States Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980 and to the U.S.
