Your team has a place at the above event and I enclose further venue details and a risk assessment. Please remember that your team must consist of four students from S1 and S2 (Scotland) including no more than two from the upper year group, unless you wish to field a team of younger students (there is no lower limit). Your team must be accompanied by a supervising member of staff, who will play a key role on the day. After being briefed and reallocated to another team at the start, they will help run and mark each round (answers are provided) while retaining responsibility for their students throughout the day. Lunch is provided for one supervising adult per team, but please ensure that your students bring their own packed lunch and refreshments. If your school requires you to send a second adult, please ask them to bring their own lunch. We cannot accommodate parents or other spectators. Please arrive at 10am for a 10.30am start. We aim to finish by or soon after 3pm. Your team will receive starter questions on arrival to warm up before the event begins; information from these can also prove useful later in the competition. You should all bring warm clothing, as it can be cold in some of the halls used for the events. VENUE DETAILS: The full address for your regional final is: Elphinstone Hall, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen AB24 3FX. I enclose maps and you can find detailed travel information on the University’s web site at: www.abdn.ac.uk/about/campus/maps/travelling-to-aberdeen.php. Elphinstone Hall is located on the Old Aberdeen site and is shown as building 25 on the Old Aberdeen campus map enclosed. A small number of onsite parking spaces have been reserved at the rear of Elphinstone Hall for participating schools. Once these are filled, you can park at Aberdeen Sports Village’s Aquatics Centre on Regent Walk (AB24 1SX), a 5-minute walk away, or it may be possible to park on some of the roads on the outskirts of campus (Bedford Road, Tilydrone Avenue, University Road and St Machar Drive - all shown on the campus map) or the little streets leading off them, but please note that most roads surrounding the campus have parking meters. There are four rounds at the regional final: The UKMT is a company limited by guarantee (no. 3271283) and a charity registered in England & Wales (no. 1059125) Group Round Crossnumber Shuttle Relay (this is an active round and we recommend that students bring trainers even if not required by the venue) Past materials can be downloaded from www.tmc.ukmt.org.uk and we encourage you to use these in school as preparation. The use of calculators and any geometry equipment will not be permitted on the day. At the regional final you will be asked to sign a form declaring that: the accompanying staff member(s) has undergone the appropriate DBS (or equivalent) checks; permission has been sought for photographs or videos to be taken (e.g. for publicity purposes). I enclose a template parental permission letter; you can also click here to download a Word version. If you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible, preferably by email ([email protected]) or else by telephoning UKMT; please do not contact the event venue. It is also useful if you can give a brief indication of the reason/s for having to withdraw your team. Finally, if you are planning to travel by train, it may save you money to buy a Family Railcard; see www.familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk for further details. Enjoy the regional final! Kind Regards, Helen Forsyth Events Administrator Enc. Venue risk assessment - Template parental letter and reply slip - Maps/directions as applicable TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE 2018 Risk Assessment Venue details: Elphinstone Hall, University of Aberdeen Overall risk For most of the day, students will be sitting or standing at a table, which is a low risk activity. The Relay round involves running from one part of the room to another, provided the floor is suitable for running. If the floor is deemed unsuitable, students will be required to walk. This is a low risk activity (see below). On-site supervision There will be a UKMT event leader, who has overall responsibility for running the event. They will also have an assistant. The event leader and their assistant will have completed a DBS check. Each team of four students is accompanied by at least one supervising teacher, and this teacher is responsible for the welfare of his or her students. Fire safety The event leader will be responsible for communicating emergency evacuation procedures to teachers at the start of the event. Relay round The event leader will assess the floor of the venue at the start of the day and decide whether the students will be able to run during the Relay round. We recommend to schools prior to the event that students bring indoor trainers for this round. The event leader will remind students to place bags away from the running area and to push chairs under tables to reduce the risk of tripping over obstacles whilst running. I am very grateful to Dr Frances Wilkins, Professor Ian Russell and the rest of the Local Arrangements Committee, who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure this is a fun and intellectually encouraging exchange. I recall the last time I presented at the BFE conference at Aberdeen in 2004 with pleasure, as it was one of my first presentations at an academic conference. Then, as now, the BFE was an open and very plural ‘big tent’ as an academic subject association, welcoming a diverse range of speakers and topics. That has not changed I’m happy to say, and the programme for this annual conference in 2019 is similarly catholic and stimulating. I very much hope that those of us here actively engage in the presentations, the debate and in positive debate.
