Details of other University events can be found on the main University events page at www.abdn.ac.uk/events. 2 Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 MARCH Jazz Afternoon Tea @ Elphinstone Hall Saturday 30 March, 2pm – 4pm We are delighted to once again be hosting our wonderful Jazz Afternoon Tea event, taking place in Elphinstone Hall at the heart of the King’s College campus. Now in its third year, the afternoon tea is a delightful opportunity to enjoy some delicious treats to the backdrop of jazz music provided by our current students. The proceeds from the event also go to benefit the Alumnus Association Scholarship, a very worthy cause indeed. As the afternoon tea is so close to Mother’s Day, why not treat your mum or a loved one to a special afternoon on campus? Tickets are £20 per person and we encourage you to book additional places for your friends and family. Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 3 APRIL Substance to Style: Traditional Arts of East Asia Exhibition @ The Gallery, The Sir Duncan Rice Library Thursday 11 April, 6pm – 7.30pm We hope you will join us at this fascinating event, which we are hosting in partnership with the Museums and Special Collections team. The exhibition, entitled ‘Substance to Style: Traditional Arts of East Asia’, explores the use of different materials across East Asia to create unique and exceptional pieces of art, such as Japanese netsukes, three-thousand-year-old Chinese bronze vessels, a volume of a rare Chinese encyclopedia and a samurai suit of armour. The exhibition is the result of a review of the collections undertaken by the Museums and Special Collections team, alongside curators from National Museums Scotland (NMS), and will be enhanced by objects on loan from NMS, including Korean pottery and Japanese woodblock prints. The curators will be on hand to provide a brief overview of the exhibition and museum staff will guide us through an exclusive object- handling opportunity. There will also be drinks and canapés, making this the perfect opportunity to catch up with fellow alumni and friends. Tickets are priced at £6 per person. Step into the Past: Historical Tour @ St Machar Cathedral & Seaton Park Friday 19 April, 2pm – 4pm We are delighted to have the wonderful Dr Chris Croly to lead us on an afternoon tour of St Machar Cathedral and Seaton Park. We hope you will join us on a trip down memory lane while we explore the history of these two fascinating locations, followed by refreshments and the chance to catch up with your fellow alumni. Tickets are priced at £5 per person and as always please feel free to book additional places for your friends and family. 4 Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 MAY City Centre Sips – Wine & Food Pairings @ Grape & Grain Wednesday 22 May, 6pm – 8pm Take a step back in time as we enjoy a taste of the past at this alumni event focusing on wines of the old world. In recent years Australian, South African and Chilean wines have grown in popularity; however Grape & Grain are here to show us that traditional wines are not to be forgotten. During the event you will have the chance to sample five traditional wines, enjoy some delicious cheese and meat pairings and socialise with your fellow alumni in a beautiful and cosy setting. Tickets are £25 per person and you are welcome to book additional places for your friends and family. 311th Statutory Meeting of the General Council @ Kings College Conference Centre Saturday 25 May, 11am – 1pm Members of the General Council are invited to the May Statutory Meeting of the General Council. The meeting will be followed by a May Festival event entitled ‘What Aberdeen Could Have Been’, a fascinating look at some of the key historical decisions which helped shape the Aberdeen we know today, led by Dr Chris Croly. Graduates of the University automatically become members of the General Council, as well as members of staff who meet certain criteria. To book your free place at this event simply visit the alumni events page at www.abdn.ac.uk/alumni/events Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 5 JUNE All that Remains: An Evening with Dame Sue Black @ Marischal College Anatomy Lecture Theatre Thursday 20 June, 6pm – 8pm We are thrilled to welcome Dame Sue Black back to the University, as she joins us to talk about her incredible career as a Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology. A graduate of the University, Sue Black’s exceptional work has stretched from murder investigations to war zones, all of which led to the writing of her sensational memoir ‘All That Remains: A Life in Death’. Her book has received five-star reviews across the board and was also awarded the Saltire Book of the Year Award last year. In 2016 Sue Black was appointed a Dame, being recognised for her outstanding contribution to Forensic Anthropology. Sue Black will also be signing copies of her memoir at this alumni-exclusive event. This event is free of charge but tickets are sure to go quickly! To book your place please visit the alumni events page at www.abdn.ac.uk/alumni/events Medicine & Plants Walk @ Cruickshank Botanic Garden Friday 28 June, 1.30pm – 3pm We are delighted that our exceptionally popular Medicine & Plants Walk is back once again this summer. Join Curator Mark Paterson and his colleagues as we take a (hopefully sunny!) tour around the gardens, learning all about the hidden gems and medicinal plants secreted away within the Cruickshank walls. We will also be serving delicious summer refreshments on what is sure to be a wonderful afternoon with your fellow alumni. Tickets are £5 per person and as always, the more the merrier! Feel free to book additional places for friends and family. 6 Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 AUGUST City Centre Sips – Gin Tasting @ Orchid Thursday 08 August, 6pm – 8pm What could be better than a cool and refreshing drink on a warm summer’s day? If this sounds like your cup of tea (or gin!) then we hope you will join us at our gin tasting event, hosted by Orchid bar. At this alumni-exclusive event you will have the chance to sample some delicious gin creations, including Porter’s Gin which was founded by Aberdeen graduates Ben Iravani and Josh Rennie. You will also get a sneak peak at their basement micro-distillery, where the magic of Porter’s Gin is created. As if that wasn’t enticing enough, attendees will have the chance to win their very own bottle of this award-winning spirit to take home on the night! Tickets are £18 per person and as always you are welcome to book additional tickets for your friends and family. Aberdeen Connect Spring/Summer 2019 7 OTHER UNIVERSITY EVENTS Student Show 2019: The Glaikit Showman 17 – 20 April, His Majesty’s Theatre The unmissable Student Show is back at HMT with ‘The Glaikit Showman’, the story of local loon, Pete Medden, and his group of weird and wonderful performers. Last year the students raised over £86,000 and with your support will do their best to top that this year! Tickets are priced from £22 - £30 and can be purchased from the Aberdeen Box Office. May Festival 24 – 26 May 2019, King’s College, University of Aberdeen We’re delighted to announce that the May Festival is back! May Festival is always a wonderful weekend on campus, with a wide variety of activities to suit all ages. University of Aberdeen alumni can book tickets at concession rates as well!
