Kindly hosted by Aberdeen alumnus Canon Stephen Evans and sponsored by HSBC, this festive event will once again showcase our world-class Chamber Choir under the direction of royal composer Professor Paul Mealor, Chair in Composition. In the company of acclaimed British actor Sir Tony Robinson, Classic FM presenter Bill Turnbull and celebrated Call the Midwife actress and Aberdeen alumna Laura Main, the event will be recorded by Classic FM and broadcast on the evening of the 23rd December. This wonderful celebration will also provide us with an opportunity to raise funds for the University's groundbreaking research in the fight against dementia, a subject we know is close to the hearts of our Aberdeen family and for which the University has an outstanding reputation. Your team has a place at the above event and I enclose further venue details and a risk assessment. Please remember that your team must consist of four students from S1 and S2 (Scotland) including no more than two from the upper year group, unless you wish to field a team of younger students (there is no lower limit). Your team must be accompanied by a supervising member of staff, who will play a key role on the day. After being briefed and reallocated to another team at the start, they will help run and mark each round (answers are provided) while retaining responsibility for their students throughout the day. Lunch is provided for one supervising adult per team, but please ensure that your students bring their own packed lunch and refreshments. If your school requires you to send a second adult, please ask them to bring their own lunch. We cannot accommodate parents or other spectators. Please arrive at 10am for a 10.30am start. Retirement of Sir Ian Diamond as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University On 24 August, Professor Sir Ian Diamond announced his intention to retire from the position of Principal and Vice- Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen and invited Mr Martin Gilbert, Senior Governor to commence a global search for his successor. Sir Ian has agreed to stay in post as Principal and Vice-Chancellor until his successor takes up appointment. Sir Ian joined the University of Aberdeen as Principal and Vice-Chancellor in April 2010. I am very grateful to Dr Frances Wilkins, Professor Ian Russell and the rest of the Local Arrangements Committee, who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure this is a fun and intellectually encouraging exchange. I recall the last time I presented at the BFE conference at Aberdeen in 2004 with pleasure, as it was one of my first presentations at an academic conference. Then, as now, the BFE was an open and very plural ‘big tent’ as an academic subject association, welcoming a diverse range of speakers and topics. That has not changed I’m happy to say, and the programme for this annual conference in 2019 is similarly catholic and stimulating. I very much hope that those of us here actively engage in the presentations, the debate and in positive debate.
