July 19, 2017

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Welcome to MMTC’s 15th Annual Access to Capital and Telecom Policy Conference featuring the Second Annual Capital Pitch Competition. The Conference is the preeminent national gathering of entrepreneurs, investors, lenders, regulators, and legislators focused on multicultural media and telecom ownership, and access to capital.

As we celebrate our 31st year, our theme, “Financing America’s Future,” reflects MMTC’s pivotal role as a connector of diverse communities to capital, job opportunities, and policies that support entrepreneurs of color. The driving focus of this year’s conference is how multicultural media, telecom, and tech entrepreneurship serve as platforms for economic growth, job creation, and innovation in the nation’s most influential industries.

Let me take the opportunity to thank all the participants, including the Federal Communications Commission chairman and commissioners, officials from the Trump Administration and the Congress, as well as corporate and not-for-profit leaders who are lending their expertise to the Conference.

We convey our deepest appreciation and thanks to all our sponsors, especially our Gold Sponsors, AT&T, BIA Kelsey, and Comcast; our Silver Sponsors, , National Association of Broadcasters, NCTA – The Internet & Television Association, Urban One, Inc. (formerly Radio One, Inc.), and Verizon; and our Bronze Sponsors, BET, Motion Picture Association of America, Politic365, SNL Kagan, T-Mobile, and Viacom. This Conference would not be possible without them.

In addition, I extend my sincere thanks, too, to our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, Best Minds Policy Committee, and our Telecom and Internet Policy Task Force and Digital Equity Roundtable for giving MMTC so much of their time and wisdom over the years. Thanks also to our talented MMTC staff, led by our extraordinary President and CEO, Kim Keenan, and Executive Vice President, Maurita Coley.

Thank you for joining us, and enjoy the conference.

Sincerely,

Julia L. Johnson Chair, Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council Welcome Letter from the President and CEO

July 19, 2017

Welcome to the 15th Annual Access to Capital and Telecom Policy Conference. This year’s theme, “Financing America’s Future,” reflects our mission to promote entrepreneurship, access to capital, and the opportunities presented by a digital economy.

We have assembled a stellar group of distinguished speakers from the Federal Communications Commission, telecommunications industry professionals, policymakers, and entrepreneurs. Our goal is to leave everyone with the information and tools to go back to their respective positions and make a thoughtful contribution to the media, tech, and telecommunications industries. We must invest in the leaders, technology, and infrastructure of the future if we are to make the digital economy accessible to every American.

Our Access to Capital Keynote Speaker is Benjamin Todd Jealous, Partner at Kapor Capital and Former President and CEO of the NAACP. Regardless of his position, Ben has been a powerful advocate for economic justice and cutting-edge entrepreneurship. We will also induct the indefatigable Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, into the MMTC Hall of Fame. On Thursday, during the Congressional Luncheon, our Keynote Speaker and Hall of Fame Inductee is the Honorable Rodney E. Slater, Former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and current Partner at Squire, Patton Boggs.

I would like to extend MMTC’s gratitude and appreciation to all of our many sponsors and partners, most notably our Gold Sponsors, AT&T, BIA Kelsey, and Comcast; our Silver Sponsors, Charter Communications, National Association of Broadcasters, NCTA – The Internet & Television Association, Urban One, Inc. (formerly Radio One, Inc.), and Verizon; and our Bronze Sponsors, BET, Motion Picture Association of America, NetCommunications, Politic365, SNL Kagan, T-Mobile, and Viacom. Thank you. You make this conference possible.

Finally, I want to express my deep appreciation to the MMTC team for their tireless dedication and teamwork in making this conference a success.

Sincerely,

Not all of these capital expenses are supported by corporate investments. In some instances, government is encouraging infrastructure initiatives by companies through grant funding such as the Connect America Fund for reaching underrepresented populations, and competitive awards for nationwide public safety interoperability initiatives such as FirstNet. More broadly, the Trump Administration will soon present its national infrastructure plan to Congress, and broadband is expected to be an important part of it.

This panel focuses on ways diverse companies can participate in each of these areas to help drive economic growth, foster business expansion, and increase workforce opportunities.
