Title: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Professor Moriarity has a scheme for stealing the crown jewels from the Tower of London. To get Holmes involved, he persuades a gaucho flute player to murder a girl. Every great hero needs at least one arch enemy that nearly is his equivalent in intellectual faculties and ingenious working methods. The sublime interactions between Holmes and Moriarty lift the quality of this film up to an higher level and, for the first time ever, you get the impression that our master detective is up against an opponent who really forces him to use ALL of his intellect for once. Almost purely for the fun of it, Professor Moriarty decides to embarrass Sherlock Holmes and steal the hugely valuable crown jewels right from under his nose. Through well thought out red herrings and distractions, Moriarty manages to confuse Holmes and to mess up his sense for priority, giving him with a perfect opportunity to steal the jewels. This installment is less of a horror film because the emphasis merely lies on the nuanced acting performances as well as on the light-hearted rivalry between Holmes and Watson. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are splendid as usual, but the show is undeniably stolen by George Zucco in his familiar The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes of criminal mastermind. Particularly the sadistic yet sophisticated conversations with his butler are pure class. The only elements that slightly disappointed me was the rushed and action-packed ending which stands in contrast with the rest of the patiently scripted story. Nevertheless, highly recommended! This portrayal of the character was released to a backdrop of a world in tension, hitting theaters on the first official day of World War II, once Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In sharp contrast to its predecessor, however, the 1979 Murder by Decree pitted Holmes [Christopher Plummer] against what some might call the ‗phantom‘ menace of a fictionalized Jack the Ripper, following hot on the heels of both the Watergate scandal as well as the American feminist movement.

  • Jancovich for HOST 6.2 1 'The Theme of Psychological Destruction'
Jancovich for HOST 6.2 ‘The Theme of Psychological Destruction’: Horror Stars, the Crisis of Identity and 1940s Horror Introduction As has been demonstrated elsewhere, the horror film and the thriller were not only closely linked during the 1940 but almost synonymous terms (Jancovich 2009). Stars’ images of the period further demonstrate this association but they also illustrate the similarities between the figure of the horror villain, the gangster and the spy, particularly the Nazi spy. These figures were not only claimed to evoke fear and terror, but to do so due to the shared characteristics of these figures. Rather than simply threatening violence, these figures shared an association with psychological disturbance, by which they were not only motivated but which they also induced in their victims. Consequently, in an article published at the time, Kracauer did not distinguish between the horror film, the gangster film or the thriller but collectively referred to them as the “terror films” or “horror-thrillers”, and claimed that they featured “the theme of psychological destruction” so that their villains “no longer shoot, strangle or poison the females that they want to do away with, but systematically try to drive them insane” (Kracauer 1946, 133). In other words, while many horror villains, gangsters and spies were driven by a desire to dominate the world, their drives were often presented as psychological forces that tragically dominated them. Their desire to dominate the world was a psychological compulsion over which they had no control. Conversely, their domination of others often drove their victims into madness, or into 1 Jancovich for HOST 6.2 questioning their own sanity.

Professor Moriarty and the Adventure of the Irish(?) Criminal: Tracing the Evolution of Sherlock Holmes’s Arch-Nemesis, 1893–2017 by Kayla M Cook Cook 1 Introduction The first installment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet was first published in November of 1887 in Beaton’s Christmas Annual. This was the first story to feature Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, who would soon become two of the most famous characters in detective fiction, as well as two of the most famous fictional characters of all time. Over the next four decades came three more novels and fifty-six short stories. In each of these, a crime is committed in some quaint little English village, offsetting society from the norm; the Metropolitan Police, also called Scotland Yard due to their geographic location within London, is called in, and if it is too much for them to handle—which often is the case, at an almost unsettling rate, in these stories—they call in Sherlock Holmes, an amateur detective with a genius mind and a keen eye for observation who, thanks to his ability to notice things that others do not, solves the cases quickly, thus resetting the town to its social norm. At the end of the Victorian Era, London was a center for crime, so stories like Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes narratives, in which the detective is always able to solve the crime and the culprit is always caught and locked away, were comforting to many London readers. Sherlock Holmes gained popularity fast, and with each new story, was further established as the representative and protector of respectable, law-abiding Anglo-centric Victorian British society.

  • Movies in 1939 by Richard Von Busack
Movies in 1939 By Richard von Busack One hears it everywhere—1939, the greatest year in the Amer- ican cinema. The Depression still lingered; the war was yet to begin. There was political strife and class struggle everywhere, which explains the skepticism, the questioning of motives and of extremes in 1939 films—a dislike of easy answers visible, or at least glimpsable, in everything from urban exposés to musicals to screwball comedies. In his fine biography of Marlene Dietrich, Stephen Bach writes: “Why 1939 happened that way has been the subject of countless articles and even books, but it was less a watershed year (things would never be so good again) than a culmination of everything that had been learned since Al Jolson burst into song. All the elements of a popular art coalesced at a moment of maturity—sharp and fresh, without cynicism or contempt for the audience (which explains many things.)” The truth is that 1940 was almost as good as 1939. 1925, 1926 and 1974 were all vintage years; as for 2019, we’ll need a measure of time to figure out whether we have everything before us or nothing before us. In 1939, 80 million tickets were sold to some 365 American films, by the count of the Los Angeles Times’ Jack Mathews, one of the first to celebrate this golden year. The screens were still being filled by block booking—the practice of the seven major studios (Paramount, Universal, MGM, Twentieth Century-Fox, Warner Brothers, Columbia and RKO), all ensuring they had a place for the films they were releasing sight unseen.

  • Master Thesis Espen Gabrielsen.Pdf (301.8Kb)
ABSTRACT One of the most intriguing characters in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories is the "Napoleon of Crime", Professor James Moriarty. Originally a one-story villain devised to kill off Holmes, Moriarty has transformed over a century of adaptations and retellings into a much more prominent part of the franchise, a byword for "arch-enemy", and – it might be argued – a prototype for other pop-culture nemeses such as Batman's Joker and James Bond's Blofeld. His most iconic incarnation in later years is likely the homicidal maniac portrayed by Andrew Scott in BBC's Sherlock (2010), interestingly enough a version that differs considerably from Doyle's original. This thesis attempts to explain this rise in prominence, and the chancing nature of the character, by viewing Moriarty through the lens of Otherness. A philosophical concept related to Hegel and Sartre, as well as Said's Orientalism, this theory states that we perceive ourselves in contrast to others. On the assumption, described by Neil McCaw, that Sherlock Holmes represents the interests and standpoint of the audience – a symbol of both good and law, but also (due to his origins) England and the West – it analyses some of the most prominent Holmes adaptations to discover what Moriarty represents in turn. The answer differs with each adaptation, according to historical context, but Moriarty is always more than a simple academic turned rogue. During Doyle's day, the time of the British Empire, he is ultimately a dangerous nuisance. Immediately prior to World War Two, he channels Hitler and the spectre of war.
