Beginning with 44 Founding Fellows, the membership has grown to the planned maximum of 250 professional engineers, elected on the basis of their distinguished careers, and of their service and contributions to society, to the country and to the engineering profession. Over its brief 15-year history, the Academy has independently initiated several major studies, drawing on the expertise of its volunteer members. It has issued eight reports dealing with the engineering education, engineering research, the evolution of the engineering profession and other areas of direct importance to the nation.

    Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering Department of Systems and Computer Engineering Carleton University Seminar Announcement Speaker: Dr. Monique Frize Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University School of Information Technology and Engineering, University of Ottawa Overview of three research areas of MIRG Topic: (Medical Information technologies Research Group) Date: Wednesday 15 November, 2006 Time: 1-2pm Place: 4359ME, Carleton University Abstract: The assessment of pain Our approach is to study how thermal dysfunction is associated with pain through the analysis of thermal images which are classified according to the part of the body they focus on (for instance, upper back, lower back, front legs, face, etc.). Relevant regions of interest are selected using anatomical markers and shapes and contours of the body and the comparison includes the computation of common as well as higher-order statistics. The technique is currently being applied to the detection of pain in infants and adults, and to identify potential muskulo-skeletal injuries caused by piano-playing and computer use. Clinical decision-support tools are being created to estimate clinical outcomes in obstetrics (such as pre- term birth) and delivery mode; perinatal outcomes such as the status of the infant at birth (Apgar 5), probability of survival and the development of complications are being studied. We have also created a decision-support system to help parents make difficult decisions such as, should critical care be initiated? Should it be terminated or continued? Another aspect of our tools is to use information technology (IT) to reduce the occurrence of medical errors. The third area is the development of web services for infant care.

She was a biomedical engineer for 18 years in hospitals (1971-1989) and a Professor since 1989. Monique Frize published over 200 papers in journals and conference proceedings on artificial intelligence in medicine, infrared imaging, ethics and women in engineering and science. She is Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (1992), Fellow of Engineers Canada (2010), Officer of the Order of Canada (1993) and recipient of the 2010 Gold Medal from Professional Engineers Ontario and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. She received five honourary doctorates in Canadian universities since 1992. Monique Frize held the national Northern Telecom/NSERC Chair for women in engineering at the University of New Brunswick between December 1989 and June 1997, then the NSERC/Nortel Chair for women in science and engineering for Ontario between July 1997 and June 2002. She was a founding member of INWES (International Network of women engineers and scientists) in 2002 and its president between 2002 and 2008.     Environmental scan report 30 by 30 and beyond Strategic priority 3: recruitment, retention, and professional development of women in the engineering profession Executive Summary In May 2018, Engineers Canada’s Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan, which highlighted, in strategic priority 3 (SP3), the need to drive cultural change in the engineering profession in order to attain 30 by 30. Engineers Canada’s Strategic priority 3: Recruitment, retention, and professional development of women in the engineering profession expanded the 30 by 30 initiative to include the retention and professional development of women. SP3 is aimed at ensuring that, in partnership with the regulators, actions plans are developed and implemented to achieve an expanded scope. This environmental scan assesses the internal and external environments that impact Engineers Canada’s SP3. The report draws on survey data provided by the 30 by 30 Champions to present a history of women in engineering work that has been supported at Engineers Canada, a snapshot of the current state of the 30 by 30 initiative, statistics and research on the barriers to women’s participation in engineering, as well as an analysis of the role of Engineers Canada. The scope of this environmental scan is limited due to available time and resources. Information for this document was drawn from Engineers Canada’s archives, Engineers Canada’s National Membership reports, Engineers Canada’s Enrolment and Degrees Awarded reports, external reports, academic literature, and the SP3 survey of 30 by 30 Champions.
