About the Children of the Republic of Texas

History

On March 1, 1929, during the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Convention, a motion was made and passed that the DRT sponsor a junior organization known as the “Children of the Republic of Texas.” The first CRT Chapter organized was Alamo Mission in San Antonio, with 34 members.

Flower Indian Paintbrush

Motto “Not for self, but for Texas.”

Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of America

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands; one Nation under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

Pledge to the Texas Flag

“Honor the Texas Flag I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, One State Under God, One and Indivisible.”

Texas, Our Texas

Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty state! Texas, our Texas! So wonderful, so great! Boldest and grandest, withstanding every test; O’ Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

Texas, O Texas! Your freeborn single star, Sends out its radiance to nations near and far Emblem of freedom! It sets our hearts aglow; With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo,

Texas, dear Texas! From Tyrant grip now free, Shines forth in splendor your star of destiny. Mother of Heroes! We come, your children true, Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you. Chorus: God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, that you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

CRT 2009-2010 Handbook Page 13 of 45 TEXAS HONOR AND MEMORIAL DAYS September 15, Texian Navy Day Texian Navy Day honors the courage and determination of the small Texian Navy who, by 1842 had helped secure the Gulf of Mexico and protect Texas independence on the sea. It also pays tribute to the 1832 Battle of Velasco, when Texian Volunteers on sea and on land fought an early skirmish for their rights.

September 29, French Legation Day This day honors the signing of the treaty between the France and the Republic of Texas which lead to the establishment of the French Legation in Austin. This building is the only foreign embassy standing in an American city outside of Washington, D.C. It serves as a reminder of the independent Texas Republic.

October 2, Gonzales Day Gonzales Day is in remembrance of the first skirmish fought in the Texas War for Independence. On October 2, 1835, the citizens of Gonzales refused to give up a small cannon to the Mexican Military. Texians rallied around a flag showing a cannon and a single black star, with the legend “Come and Take It!” The Mexican troops retreated to San Antonio. The Texians, under Stephen F. Austin organized an army and followed. Gonzales is remembered as “The Lexington of Texas.”

November 3 Stephen F. Austin’s Birthday Honoring “The Father of Texas”, who brought the first 300 Anglo families into Texas beginning in 1822 and who helped guide Texas during the difficult years under the Mexican flag. Austin served as the first commander of the Texas Army during the War for Texas Independence and later served as a commissioner to the United States. He was also the first to hold office as Secretary of State of the Texian Republic. Austin died in December of 1836 and is now buried in the State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.

November 6, DRT Founder’s Day DRT Founder’s Day honors the 1891 chartering of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas at “The Cradle” in Galveston. The surviving members of the Texas Veterans Association passed the legacy of the Texian Republic to the DRT who vowed to keep the memory and spirit of early Texas alive for generations to come.

January 26, Mirabeau B. Lamar Day Lamar, second president of the Texas Republic, advocated setting aside land for public schools. This resulted in the Texas Congress establishing a system of public education. During Lamar’s term as president, the city of Austin was created and made the state capital. Lamar also approved the design of the state flag and seal. He is known as the “Father of Education.” Lamar University in Beaumont is named in his honor.

CRT 2009-2010 Handbook Page 14 of 45 February 19, Texas Statehood Day Statehood Day honors Texas’ entry into the United States as the 28th state of the Union. Following a vote of the Texan people to annex themselves to the United States, President John Tyler admitted Texas into the Union in December 1845. The actual change of government from independent nation to state came on February 19, 1846 when the Texas flag was lowered at the state capitol by Texas President Anson Jones and the United States flag was raised in its place.

March 2, Texas Independence and Flag Day This day honors the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the Brazos. As Colonel William B. Travis and the brave defenders of the Alamo withstood Santa Anna’s army, the fifty-nine delegates representing each of the Texas colonies and municipalities gathered in Convention and declared Texas an independent nation. An ad-interim government was elected with David G. Burnet as President and Lorenzo de Zavala as Vice-President. A Constitution was adopted on March 17, 1836. March 6, Alamo Heroes Day Alamo Heroes Day honors the heroic sacrifices of the less than 200 Texian citizen-soldiers who defended the Alamo from February 23 – March 6, 1836. Electing to fight to the death rather than surrender, they gave their lives in order that Texas might live, and their sacrifice was not in vain. The battle cry “Remember the Alamo!” became the rallying point for the Texian people and continues to inspire Texans and Americans. The Alamo has become an international symbol of courage, honor, and the love of liberty and is visited by over 3 million people each year.

March 27, Goliad Heroes Day Goliad Day honors those who gave their lives in the cause of Texas Independence at Goliad. Following the fall of the Alamo, part of Santa Anna’s army attacked Col. Fannin’s troops at Goliad. Fannin was forced to surrender after the battle of Coleto Creek on March 19-20, 1836. He and his men were promised fair treatment and parole, but Santa Anna ordered that all prisoners be shot. On March 27, over 320 unknowing Texian prisoners were marched out and executed. This was the largest loss of life in the battle for Texas Independence. “Remember Goliad” became one of the great battle cries at San Jacinto. When we remember Goliad, we also remember those who gave their lives at Refugio, Coleto Creek, and San Patricio, as well as Pachita Alavez, “The Angel of Goliad,” who helped save several of the Texian prisoners from being shot.

April 21, San Jacinto Day San Jacinto Day honors the victory of the Texian Army over Santa Anna. On April 21, 1836, forty-six days after the fall of the Alamo, Sam Houston led less than 1000 Texians against the Mexican Army. With the battle cries of “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad” ringing in their ears, Texian troops took less than 20 minutes to defeat more than 1600 Mexican soldiers. Santa Anna was captured and promised to remove his army from Texas. This secured the independence of the Texian people who went on to build a great Republic and state.

Texas History - lets help keep it fun

This year the President’s General Project is to raise funds for supplies to go into the Alamo living history traveling trunks. The supplies that my project will fund are geared towards children. Currently, the items in the trunks are items that adults mainly used. Children probably used them too, but I would like to see what type of toys or books they read during the time of the Republic of Texas. Some examples are rag dolls, corn husk dolls, marbles and wooden toys.

I would also like to challenge CRT chapters and DRT chapters to possibly make some handmade items that could be placed in the travel trunks for that District or to be used by other Districts.

If you make handmade items please mail them to me and I will present them to Mrs. Van Cleve.

The Raffle Chances will be for a Sterling Silver Alamo Set, (earrings, necklace and bracelet)

Raffle Chances: 1 Chance for $2 or 3 Chances for $5

Checks should be made payable to: Children of the Republic of Texas MEMO: PG Project

Each Chapter and individual that participates in raising funds or making handmade items for this project will receive a special certificate at the 2010 CRT Convention

Even if they had the money, stores were few and far between. So what are some things that your ancestors would have had to make for themselves?

1. List 6 items that you would make for yourself in order to save money during the Republic of Texas era. (no more than 2 food products) 2. Go to a reenactment and have your photo taken with the re- enactors making 2 different home made products. Photos must be taken with a picture of the Republic of Texas $5 bill as shown below. 3. Children under 10 (only) may choose to draw a picture of a person making something the old fashion way.

All projects are due by June 1, 2010. Please include District and Chapter name.

CRT 2009-2010 Handbook Page 26 of 45 REGISTRAR GENERAL’S PROJECT Registrar General

The Registrar General Shall maintain a correct membership roster of the CRT and shall help promote new members and member supplements.

Family … all because two people fell in love

You are a member of CRT because two people fell in love during the 1800’s. Out of this love comes stores of triumph and turmoil, stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. Most of these stories are found in our FAMILY BIBLES – birth records, marriage licenses, death certificates and much more. Let’s ask a member of our family to help us find some of these records and have a little fun.

This year’s Registrar project is as follows:

8 and Under: Draw a picture of your ancestors who came to Texas and gave you the opportunity to be a member of CRT.

Associate Members 8 and Under: Draw a picture of a Texas Hero and their family. Be sure to tell us which Texas Hero you are depicting.

9 and Older: Write a brief essay of your ancestors and their history. Please include information such as where they came from and where they settle, who and when they were married, how many children they had, their occupation and maybe their hobbies or list some of their friends.

Be sure to include your Name, Age, and Chapter with your submission.

Deadline is June 1, 2010

Please send your completed project to:

CRT 2009-2010 Handbook Page 27 of 45 CHILDREN OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Historian General Project

The Office of Historian General is responsible for maintaining a history of the Association and compiles a scrapbook of publicity and other articles of interest as well as photos of CRT activities. This scrapbook will be displayed at convention and presented to our President General, Ashley Graham. Please help make the State Scrapbook one to be proud of. Each Chapter should be represented. Please send one or more 12x12 page from your Chapter and remember to name everyone in the photos, include dates and name of events. CHAPTER CERTIFICATES will be awarded at Convention in 2010.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND FUN!!!! We are creating a TEXAS TIME CAPSULE. Each Chapter will send a photo of your Chapter meeting or event labeled, dated, with names included of those in the photo. ALSO Send an item that you feel represents life in Texas today. All will go into a locked container and stored until the 100th Anniversary of CRT. The time capsule will be opened at Convention in 2029. Twenty years may be a short time for a time capsule but we want to be around to see it opened! It will be fun to see what changes occur in twenty years. So get those wheels turning and think of some really clever items to go into the time capsule. For storage consideration the items need to be reasonably small, nothing bigger than a shoe box and nothing perishable. Send the items or email a list of what you will bring to Convention NO LATER THAN JUNE 1, 2010. Certificates will be awarded to Chapter and Individuals. CHAPTER SCRAPBOOKS YOUR CHAPTER’S SCRAPBOOK will be presented for judging at Convention. It will be judged based on the age of the Chapter Historian in two categories: TWELVE AND UNDER, or THIRTEEN AND OVER. In each category, there will be 1sst, 2nd 3rd and Honorable Mention Awards. CRT 2009-2010 Handbook Page 44 of 45 CRT Voting Member

Who is eligible to vote? :

All CRT Members who are 10 years or older and present at the CRT state convention will be eligible to vote. Voting members are identified and will have seating near the front of the assembly hall.

What do you vote about? :

Voting activity may include items presented from the CRT Board of Management. An example may be a bylaw change. The information will be read to the assembly and, or, handouts may be made available. As appropriate, questions should be asked by addressing the officer in charge from the floor. Usually the President General will recognize an individual. Follow parliamentary procedures by being recognized. Example: identify yourself by your name and chapter and then state your question.

Voting will also be conducted for the next year’s CRT Board of Management (BOM). The CRT BOM slate of officers will be presented by the nominating committee chairman. A candidate may be nominated from the floor. If there is more than one candidate for an office, each candidate will be allowed to speak about their qualifications for the office. When more than one candidate is nominated, a written ballot is cast by each voting member. Adult tellers will distribute the ballot, collect, count and report the results. If only one candidate is presented, that vote can be by voice (by ‘yes’ or ‘no’ approval).

CRT State Nominating Committee

One voting aged member from each chapter, present at the state convention on Friday, will serve as a member of the state nominating committee. During the meeting, the CRT Board of Management officers will be selected to present to the voting assembly at the Saturday convention meeting. The candidates must complete the required application which has a posted deadline on Friday of the convention. The time and forms are available at registration. When a chapter’s member attends the nominating committee meeting, they will have the application to review for each office a candidate has selected. The nominating committee will select the candidate they feel is best qualified for the office. The nominating committee will be able to discuss all candidates who have applied for an office to determine which person is best qualified. The nominating committee’s recommendations are by vote with the majority selecting the candidate. If there is only one candidate for an office, that person can be selected, however; the nominating committee will make the final choice. Candidates may select more than one office and the nominating committee may recommend the candidate for a 2nd or 3rd choice on the application. The nominating committee may also select a candidate for an office for which they did not apply for if an office does not have a candidate and the candidate was not selected for positions chosen on the application. The CRT State Director (DRT 3rd VP General) will serve as an advisor and may select an adult to assist as secretary for the group. No other adults are allowed so that the children have the opportunity to participate in a democratic process through this leadership opportunity.
