JEWISH STATISTICS 277 JEWISH STATISTICS The statistics of Jews in the world rest largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. THE UNITED STATES ESTIMATES As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or natural- ized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living in this country are based upon estimates. The Jewish population was estimated— In 1818 by Mordecai M. Noah at 3,000 In 1824 by Solomon Etting at 6,000 In 1826 by Isaac C. Harby at 6,000 In 1840 by the American Almanac at 15,000 In 1848 by M. A. Berk at 50,000 In 1880 by Wm. B. Hackenburg at 230,257 In 1888 by Isaac Markens at 400,000 In 1897 by David Sulzberger at 937,800 In 1905 by "The Jewish Encyclopedia" at 1,508,435 In 1907 by " The American Jewish Year Book " at 1,777,185 In 1910 by " The American Je\rish Year Book" at 2,044,762 DISTRIBUTION The following table by States presents two sets of estimates. -

An Application for a Texas Historical Marker Presented to the Harris County Historical Commission – September 12, 2016 THE LYNCHBURG VOLUNTEERS 1 2 3 by Trevia Wooster Beverly, Bernice Mistrot, and Mike Vance ©Baytown Historical Preservation Association4 “The people of Texas do now constitute a free, sovereign and independent republic.”5 PREFACE6 From the colonial era until today, America has depended upon citizen soldiers in times of crisis requiring a military response. These men—and now women—set aside their personal and professional affairs to join or form military organizations. And, once the crisis was resolved, resumed their civilian occupations until they were again needed as soldiers. This was especially a characteristic of frontiersmen, one which they carried with them In the 1820’s and 1830’s as their line of settlement moved beyond the western border of the United States of America into the Spanish and then Mexican territory of Texas. I. CONTEXT 7 The area now known as Baytown was home to many who, arriving as early as 1822, would 8 9 become active in the struggle for Texas independence that culminated in 1836. Nathaniel Lynch, for whom the town of Lynchburg is named, arrived in Texas in the summer of 1822 with his wife and three children. On his one-league Mexican land grant, he established a trading post and a sawmill. 10 Together with Arthur McCormick, he operated the Lynchburg Ferry, which has been in continuous 11 12 operation since 1822. David Gouverneur Burnet brought a steam sawmill to the area in 1831. Midway Landing was not a town speculation, but the dock area on Black Duck Bay at the plantation 13 14 of William Scott, who had purchased the land from John D. -

Richard Page, Lara Schwarz, & Nora Hellmold Vosburg) due for publication in 2016. https://scholarworks.iupui.edu Texas Alsatian, Medina County, Texas 1 Introduction: Historical background The Alsatian dialect was transported to Texas in the early 1800s, when entrepreneur Henri Castro recruited colonists from the French Alsace to comply with the Republic of Texas’ stipulations for populating one of his land grants located just west of San Antonio. Castro’s colonization efforts succeeded in bringing 2,134 German-speaking colonists from 1843 – 1847 (Jordan 2004: 45-7; Weaver 1985:109) to his land grants in Texas, which resulted in the establishment of four colonies: Castroville (1844); Quihi (1845); Vandenburg (1846); D’Hanis (1847). Castroville was the first and most successful settlement and serves as the focus of this chapter, as it constitutes the largest concentration of Alsatian speakers. This chapter provides both a descriptive account of the ancestral language, Alsatian, and more specifically as spoken today, as well as a discussion of sociolinguistic and linguistic processes (e.g., use, shift, variation, regularization, etc.) observed and documented since 2007. The casual observer might conclude that the colonists Castro brought to Texas were not German-speaking at all, but French. -

THE STORY BEHIND THE BATTLE OF PLUM CREEK INTRODUCTION In early August of 1840, under the light of a bright full moon, referred to by early Texas settlers as a Comanche moon, a war party of more than 600 Comanche and Kiowa warriors swept out of the Comancheria and rode for the heart of the Republic of Texas. The massive raid was launched in retaliation for what the Comanche perceived to be the unprovoked killing of twelve Penateka Comanche war chiefs and many Comanche women and children at the Council House peace talks in San Antonio the preceding March. -

Hijo del señor Manuel 1 Fernández, gran propietario del Valle de México y de la señora Alejandra Félix. Desde pequeño fue criado por un tío que era sacerdote, con quien realizó los estudios básicos. Posteriormente se trasladó a la ciudad de México, para realizar los estudios de derecho en el Colegio de San Ildefonso.
