(Proteaceae) Distribution: Endemic to NSW Current EPBC Act Status: Endangered Current NSW TSC Act Status: Critically Endangered Proposed change for alignment: update EPBC Act to Critically Endangered Conservation Advice: Grevillea caleyi (Caley's Grevillea). Summary of Conservation Assessment against IUCN Red List criteria Grevillea caleyi (Caley's Grevillea) is found to be eligible for listing as Critically Endangered under Criterion B1 (b) (i) (ii) (iii) (v), (c) (iv) and Criterion E. The main reasons for the species being eligible for listing in the Critically Endangered category are i) that the species has a very highly restricted geographic range. The extent of occurrence (EOO) and the area of occupancy (AOO) for G. caleyi were estimated to be approximately 56 km2; ii) a continuing decline is estimated in geographic distribution (EOO and AOO), area and extent and quality of habitat and the number of mature individuals; iii) there are extreme fluctuations in the number of mature individuals; iv) Modelling of extinction risk (Regan and Auld 2004) suggests that the probability of extinction may be ≥ 50% in 3 generations. Assessment against IUCN Red List criteria Criterion A. Population Size reduction. Assessment Outcome: Data deficient. Justification: 85% of the habitat of the species has been cleared, with much of the clearing in the 20th century. The generation length of the species is likely to be 8-15 years and 3 generations would be 25-45 years. However, given that generations are triggered by fire events (and do not occur independently of fire) and that the average fire return interval in the habitat is approximately 7-17 years (Bradstock and Kenny 2003), 3 generations is more likely to be 21-60 years. -

PREMOLI∗ Laboratorio Ecotono, Centro Regional Universitario Bariloche, Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Quintral 1250, 8400 Bariloche, Argentina Abstract: Deforestation of temperate forests has created landscapes of forest remnants in matrices of intense human use. We studied the genetic effects of fragmentation in southern Chile on Embothrium coccineum J.R. et G. Forster, an early colonizing, bird-pollinated tree. We tested the hypothesis that, because of its self-incompatibility and life-history strategy, E. coccineum is less strongly affected by fragmentation. We studied the effects of reduced population size and increased isolation on population genetic structure and early performance of progeny. Samples were collected from spatially isolated trees and six fragments of differing sizes (small, 1 ha; medium, 20 ha; large, >150 ha). Based on isozyme polymorphisms we estimated parameters of genetic diversity, di- vergence, and inbreeding for adults and greenhouse-grown progeny. We also measured germination, seedling growth, and outcrossing rates on progeny arrays. Genetic variation of adults did not correlate significantly with population size, as expected, given that fragmentation occurred relatively recently. Weak effects of fragmenta- tion were measured on progeny. Only adults yielded significant inbreeding. Similar total genetic diversity was found in adults and progeny. Low but significant genetic differentiation existed among adult and progeny pop- ulations. Seedling growth correlated positively with the effective number of alleles, showing deleterious effects of inbreeding on progeny. Seeds from small fragments had the highest outcrossing rates and germination success, indicating that higher pollinator activity in such fragments reduced selfing, thereby buffering genetic erosion and maintaining adaptive variation. -

Native plants of Sydney Harbour National Park: historical records and species lists, and their value for conservation monitoring Doug Benson National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquaries Rd, Sydney 2000 AUSTRALIA [email protected] Abstract: Sydney Harbour National Park (lat 33° 53’S; long 151° 13’E), protects significant vegetation on the harbour foreshores close to Sydney City CBD; its floristic abundance and landscape beauty has been acknowledged since the writings of the First Fleet in 1788. Surprisingly, although historical plant collections were made as early as1802, and localised surveys have listed species for parts of the Park since the 1960s, a detailed survey of the flora of whole Park is still needed. This paper provides the first definitive list of the c.400 native flora species for Sydney Harbour National Park (total area 390 ha) showing occurrence on the seven terrestrial sub-regions or precincts (North Head, South Head, Dobroyd Head, Middle Head, Chowder Head, Bradleys Head and Nielsen Park). The list is based on historical species lists, records from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (formerly Dept of Environment, Climate Change and Water) Atlas, National Herbarium of New South Wales specimen details, and some additional fieldwork. 131 species have only been recorded from a single precinct site and many are not substantiated with a recent herbarium specimen (though there are historical specimens from the general area for many). Species reported in the sources but for which no current or historic specimen exists are listed separately as being of questionable/non-local status. -

AUSTRALIA’S MOST IMPERILLED PLANTS AND THEIR RECOVERY Over the next decade, many endangered plants could slip away unnoticed. Botanist Jen Silcock introduces a project focused on creating awareness and action to prevent this. wildlife-australia.org | Wildlife Australia | 9 rom the comfort of a window desk at the Queensland Herbarium, as summer turned to autumn, I embarked on a botanical tour Fof Australia. But like a disaster tourist, I had eyes only for the downtrodden and imperilled. I began by slogging my way through dense thickets of words, over mountains of data and down vales of uncertainty to track down Australia’s most endangered plants. What I have found is both sobering and uplifting. Around 1100 plant species, about 5% of Australia’s known total, are listed as endangered or critically endangered (under state or federal laws). A fifth of these survive in only a single population, while 60% are known from five or fewer populations. About 100 (11%) are represented by fewer than 100 plants. The rarity and tiny distribution of many of these species make them highly vulnerable to human impacts and chance events. Fifty plant species are presumed extinct, although numerous recent ‘rediscoveries’ caution against such presumptions without dedicated surveys.
