INVESTIGATING THE SIRIUS "MYSTERY" Ian Ridpath Did amphibious beings from the star Sirius visit the earth 5,000 or more years ago and leave advanced astronomical knowledge that is still pos- sessed by a remote African tribe called the Dogon? This astonishing claim was put forward in 1976 by Robert Temple in his "ancient astro- naut" book, The Sirius Mystery. An astronomer, familiar with the Sirius system, would say no, because astronomical theory virtually precludes the possibility that Sirius is a suitable parent star for life or that it could have habitable planets. But most of Robert Temple's readers would not know enough astronomy to judge the matter for themselves. Neither would they find the relevant astronomical information in Temple's book, most of which consists of brain-numbing excursions into Egyptol- ogy. (Isaac Asimov has been quoted by Temple as having said that he found no mistakes in the book; but Temple did not know that the reason for this, according to Asimov, was that he had found the book too im- penetrable to read!*) Even the BBC-TV Horizon investigation on an- cient astronauts (broadcast as part of the PBS "Nova" series in the United States), which did an otherwise excellent demolition job on the more extreme fantasies of Erich von Daniken, left the Sirius problem unanswered because of its extreme complexity. Yet an answer is needed, because the Dogon legends about a companion to Sirius are claimed to originate before any terrestrial astronomer could have known of the ex- istence of Sirius B, let alone its 50-year orbit or its nature as a tiny, con- * E d i t o r ' s note: See Asimov's essay, "The Dark Companion," in his Quasar, Quasar Burning Bright (Doubleday, 1978), in which he says he is embarrassed by his stupidity in not specifying that his comment, made only "to get rid of him [Temple] and to be polite," not be quoted.

IMPORTANT FOREW0RD Around 200,000 years ago, the hominid known as Homo erectus suddenly transformed itself into Homo Sapien with a 50 per cent increase in brain size, together with language capability and a modern anatomy. How could this have happened so suddenly after 1.2 million years of no progress at all? It is anomalies such as these that have caused considerable discomfort to highly respected evolutionary scientists such as Noam Chomsky and Roger Penrose. When state-of the-art evolutionary principles are applied to Homo sapiens, the logical conclusion is that we should not be here! The religious view of Divine Creation suffers from equal scepticism. Who can take the Garden of Eden story seriously? Science and Religion are driving round in circles in a cul-de-sac. But mankind is here, and that fact needs to be explained. The evolution of mankind is only one of the many mysteries that conventional science cannot explain. In recent years, the best seller lists have featured an increasing number of popular books which have dealt with these mysteries. One of the factors behind this trend has been the series of discoveries coming out of Egypt. The discovery of a secret doorway inside the Great Pyramid and the independent dating of the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx to the era 10500-8000 BC have captured the public’s imagination. But these historical anomalies are not just confined to Egypt. All over the world we find sites such as Stonehenge, Tiwanaku, Nazca and Baalbek that do nor fit the historical paradigm. A shadowy prehistory seems to exist as a legacy in the form of stone, maps and mythology, which our twentieth century technology has only just allowed us to recognise.

Introduction Images Re-vues, 14 | 2017 Kapwani Kiwanga’s Alien Speculations 2 1 Between the mid-nineteenth and mid- twentieth centuries, many European authors invested considerable effort to illustrate that Africans are incapable of genius and civilization. Unable to fathom that an African society might have constructed what we today know as Great Zimbabwe, German geographer Karl Mauch (1837-1875) and British archaeologist James Theodore Bent (1852-1897) developed fanciful historical narratives.

Two friends who read the book at an early stage and took extreme pains to be helpful, and devoted much of their time to writing out or explaining to me at length their lists of specific suggestions, are Adrian Berry of the London Telegraph, and Michael Scott of Tangier. The latter gave meticulous attention to details which few people would trouble to do with another's work. This book would never have been written without the material concerning the Dogon having been brought to my attention by Arthur M. Young of Philadelphia. He has helped and encouraged my efforts to get to the bottom of the mystery for years, and supplied me with invaluable materials, including the typescript of an English translation of Le Renard Pale by the anthropologists Griaule and Dieterlen, which enabled me to bring my survey up to date. Without the stimulus and early encouragement of Arthur C. Clarke of Ceylon, this book might not have found the motive force to carry it through many dreary years of research. My agent, Miss Anne McDermid, has been a model critic and adviser at all stages. Her enthusiasm and energy are matched only by her penetrating intuition and her skill at negotiation.

It has also been posited that they show Ancient Astronaut that visited earth during the gods or other mythological persons from religions of that time. Jōmon period of Ancient Japan, it shows features claimed to resemble a space suit, goggles and a space helmet. Ancient astronaut theories are various proposals that the Earth had, before first human record, been visited by intelligent extraterrestrial beings, and that such contact is linked to either the origins or development of human cultures, technologies and/or religions. Indeed, some of these theories suggests that gods from most -- if not all -- religions are actually extraterrestrial beings, and their technologies were mistaken for divine entities by primitive man.[1][2] While no peer-reviewed scientific journal validates such claims, these theories have been popularized, particularly in the latter half of the 20th century, by writers Erich von Däniken , Zecharia Sitchin and others.[3] Ancient astronaut theories also may include the idea that civilization may have evolved on earth twice, and that the visitation of ancient astronauts may reflect the return of descendants of ancient humans whose population was separated from earthbound humans. Proponents of ancient astronaut theories point to what they perceive as gaps in historical and archaeological records and also what they see as an absence of definitive explanations in certain contexts from the archaeological sciences.

  • The Akan, Other Africans and the Sirius Star System
Gye Nyame – Akan symbol meaning ‘Except God’ The Akan, other Africans and the Sirius Star System By -K- [email protected] August, 2008 Introduction The Akan are an ethnic group found primarily in the southern parts of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. This paper tries to shed some light on certain language, culture and traditions of the Akan people that point to influence from beings of the Sirius star system. My original inspiration to write this paper came while reading Robert Temple’s famous book about the Dogon entitled The Sirius Mystery (TSM). After reading his book I got inspired to put together this information, which I already had from having previously read widely. The main thesis of this paper is that the ‘Sirius tradition’ as it relates to the Akan people of West Africa, and also to other African groups, is encoded in their language, culture and traditions; hence it is through an investigation of the language, culture and traditions of the Akan people that I show the links to Sirius. Just about every African ethnic group is connected to the Sirius star system in one way or another. These can be found in their legends, their language and their culture. Africans and people of the world have been lucky to learn from great shamans and sages such as Credo Mutwa, Malidoma Some and the Dogon priests (just to name a few names that most people know of) however there are many wise men and women, sages and elders of African groups out there, who in their silence and obscurity are very effective in what they do.

Aegyptiaca. Journal of the History of Reception of Ancient Egypt The Stargate Simulacrum: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Aliens, and Postmodern Dynamics of Occulture Frederic Krueger Free University of Berlin 1. Introduction1 The film Stargate (1994, directed by Roland Emmerich) forms the basis of a successful science-fiction franchise spanning four television series with 380 episodes and two direct-to-DVD films. Its premise is an incredible archaeological discovery in Egypt: In 1928, a mysterious artifact is unearthed near the pyramids of Giza - a giant ring, fifteen feet in diameter, inscribed with strange characters, and made of a metal which does not occur naturally on Earth - the eponymous ‘Stargate,’ so-called by accompanying hieroglyphic inscriptions. For more than sixty years, no one is able to decipher the unknown symbols that presumably hold the key to its function, until the arrival of wunderkind Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson, recruited because the artifact’s apparent non- terrestrial origin and immense age lend credence to his unorthodox theories. When we first encounter him, Jackson is giving a passionate lecture arguing for a much greater antiquity of the pyramids and the Sphinx than conventional Egyptology will allow. Stubborn, elitist professors in the audience pillory him without mercy, asking whether he thought men from Atlantis built the pyramids - “or Martians perhaps!” Not Martians, but close. Jackson divines the purpose of the giant ring by recognizing the strange symbols as stylized star constellations: as the name implies, the Stargate is a threshold to the universe. If one enters the correct ‘address’ of seven of the thirty-nine symbols engraved on its surface, the gate opens a conduit between itself and an identical counterpart on another planet, much as one telephone dials another.

The precise origin of the Dogon, like those of many other ancient cultures, is undetermined. Their civilization just emerged, in much the same manner as ancient Sumer and Ancient Egypt. The early histories are informed by oral traditions that differ according to the Dogon clan being consulted and archaeological excavation much more of which needs to be conducted. Because of these inexact and incomplete sources, there are a number of different versions of the Dogon's origin myths as well as differing accounts of how they got from their ancestral homelands to the Bandiagara region. The people call themselves 'Dogon' or 'Dogom', but in the older literature they are most often called 'Habe', a Fulbe word meaning 'stranger' or 'pagan'. Certain theories suggest the tribe to be of ancient Egyptian descent. They next migrated to Libya, then somewhere in the regions of Guinea or Mauritania. Around 1490 AD, fleeing invaders and/or drought, they migrated to the Bandiagara cliffs of central Mali. Carbon-14 dating techniques used on excavated remains found in the cliffs indicate that there were inhabitants in the region before the arrival of the Dogon.

  • The Dogon and the Sirius Star
The Dogon and the Sirius Star Fact or Coincidence? With a population of about 300,000, the Dogon are an ethnic group located mainly in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa, and believed by some anthropologists and historians to be of Egyptian descent. Relatively unknown beyond West Africa, the Dogon are famous for their religious teachings that claim astral knowledge of the star system, Sirius, which is also linked with the Egyptian goddess Isis (Egyptians refer to Sirius as the “Dog Star”). Dating back thousands of years, this knowledge, which has largely been preserved through oral traditions, was only discovered by modern astronomers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Questions have therefore been raised as to the Dogon’s source of information. Dogon folklore maintains that knowledge of Sirius, which is approximately 8.6 light years from the Earth, was handed down to them by amphibious beings—Nommo (which means “to drink”)—whom they encountered as they slowly migrated from their obscure ancestral homelands to the Bandiagara cliffs. According to the tale, the aliens came from the Sirius star system in a spaceship and appeared with human torsos and snake-like lower portions. Similar spirit entities can be found in Babylonian, Accadian, and Sumerian myths. There are Dogon artistic illustrations of the alleged spaceship and the Nommo whom they also refer to as “'Masters of the Water,” “The Monitors,” “The Teachers or Instructors,” “Saviors,” and “Spiritual Guardians.” The Dogon legend was first brought to popular attention by Robert K.G. Temple in his book, The Sirius Mystery (1977).

  • The Sirius Mystery
Sandra: I have a line drawing from a book to add to this article which goes in The section on Ancient Knowledge and Indigenous Wisdom. The Sirius Mystery By Randall L. Eaton, Ph.D. Known as the Dog or Jackal Star, Sirius is the brightest star and among our closest neighbors. It is nearly 25 times brighter than our sun. In history and mythology the dolphins are most often associated with Sirius. Aristotle claimed, for example, that the dolphins disappear for thirty days at the time of the Dog Star. Robert. Temple, an English astronomer, discovered that the Dogon, a remote African tribe in Mali, had detailed knowledge about Sirius B, a dwarf star that orbits Sirius 4600 years before it was discovered by astronomy in the early 1970s. Two French anthropologists, Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen, lived with and studied the Dogon during the l930s and were the first outsiders to whom the sacred knowledge of the Dogon was revealed. Their book, entitled Le Renard Pale, describes in detail the origin of the Dogon’s knowledge of the binary star system. The sacred teachings of the Dogon explain that their tribe was host to an extraterrestrial mission from Sirius, and that dolphin-like beings known as the “Nommo” instructed the Dogon about cosmology. The Dogon’s knowledge is not restricted to the Sirius system. They knew, for example, that the planets rotate and revolve around the sun, and they knew about the moons of Jupiter which cannot be seen with the naked eye from earth. A respected scholar and scientist, Temple’s inquires led him to conclude that the Sumerian and Egyptian cultures also may have experienced similar extraterrestrial visitation.
