Sweet Washington, DC 2012 Silence Through Representation: La Malinche as Christian, Mistress and Conquistadora Colleen A. Sweet, Ph.D. Director: Mario A. Ortiz, Ph.D. La Malinche played a major role in the Mexican Conquest. She is known as both mistress and translator of Hernán Cortés. In Mexican history, her name is associated with betrayal. The year 1992 was pivotal in the discourse concerning the encounter between Europe and the Americas. Postcolonial studies stressed the need to recover the long-silenced voice of the subaltern characters of the Conquest. This search for an indigenous perspective inspired a new body of artistic works concerning Malinche. In this dissertation I examine the film La otra conquista (Salvador Carrasco, 1998), the novel Malinche (Laura Esquivel, 2006), and the play La Malinche (Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda, 2000). These works address three major roles associated with the representation of Malinche: as convert to Christianity, as mistress to Cortés, and as collaborator in the events of the Conquest. The works under study posit new explorations into the role of both female and indigenous figures in the discourse of the Conquest of Mexico. In La otra conquista, Carrasco removes Malinche from the historical record and replaces her with a revisionist figure. -

Calderón, Chair This dissertation studies the socio-cultural connections of the United States and Mexico’s Pan-African selected twentieth- and twenty-first century sites of struggle through literature, film, and music. Novels and movies such as La negra Angustias (1948/1950), Imitation of Life (1933/1959), Angelitos negros (1948/1970), Como agua para chocolate saga (1989, 2016, 2017), and film (1992), as well as music of racial activism by Mexican and Afro-Latino artists such as Negro José and Afro-Chicano band Third Root, are all key elements of my project to study the formation and understanding what of Mexico’s Tercera Raíz entails historically, politically, and culturally. I focus my study on the development of black racial consciousness in twentieth-century Mexican cultural life, and I consequently explore the manner in which Mexican writers, filmmakers and artists have managed the relationship between Afro-Mexicans and majority ii populations of white and mestizo Mexicans, as well as the racial bridge existent between the United States’ black history, and Mexico’s Third Root. -

[email protected] Abstract— Magic realism is a distinct subgenre of writing that works on the mechanism of paradoxes of placing two opposites together to make a rich and complex meaning – the fusion of real and fantastic as Angel Flores calls it ‘amalgamation of realism and fantasy’. Magic Realism can also be read as a Postcolonial weapon as it fight backs the traditional tendencies and the staunch realism of western literature. Female voices have also employed magic realism to say aloud the problems of women across the globe. Magic Realism has thrived well in the hands of women writers across cultures and continents. Toni Morrison, Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel, Chitra Divakaruni Banerjee, Arundhathi Roy, Sarah Addison Allen, Yaa Gyasi, Raja Alem etc. This paper proposes to bring into limelight the Latin American Women Writers who are often left out to be mentioned along the list of men Latin American writers. Just as realism was a response to romanticism, magic realism, which the Latin American claim to be their magical realism was a reaction to realism. -

(Affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Abishekappatti Tirunelveli-627012 ABSTRACT The movie Like Water for Chocolate is directed by Alfonso Arau in 1992 which is based on the novel Como Agua Para Chocolate written by Laura Esquivel. She is a Mexican author and screenplay writer. She began her profession as a screenplay writer, writing plays for the kindergarten children for whom she taught. She has also written several kids’ television programs. Her debut novel Como Agua Para chocolate has become a best-seller in Mexico and the United States, and it is later developed into a top- notch film. She has also incorporated magical realism, metaphors and symbolism to describe emotions and feelings of the characters. This adds discrete quality to both the film and the novel. The movie is artistically crammed with many symbols which put forward the theme of the fervent and influential narrative originally taken in the form of novel by Laura Esquivel. The story centres mainly on food. The symbolism of food in the movie is a depiction of hard work, the sense of feminism, responsibilities, roles, comfort, and craze. Keywords: top-notch, magical realism, metaphors, symbolism, feminism, discrete. The title of the film Like Water for Chocolate refers to ‘the boiling water which is used to make hot chocolate’. Laura is married to Alfonso Arau, a film director and producer. -

The Concept of Magical Realism in Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate Ms. K. SINDHU Assistant Professor of English, Periyar University, Salem-11 India Abstract Magic realist novels and stories have, typically a strong narrative drive, in which the recognizably realistic merges with the unexpected and the inexplicable and in which elements of dreams, fairy story, or mythology combine with the everyday reality, often in mosaic or kaleidoscopic pattern of refraction and recurrence. In magic realism, one can find the transformation of the common things and events of everyday into the awesome and the unreal. It is predominantly an art of surprises. Time exists in a kind of timeless fluidity and the unreal happens as part of reality. Once the reader accepts the fait accompli, the rest follows with logical precision. A literary mode rather than a different genre, magic realism aims to seize the paradox of the union of opposites. For instance, it challenges polar opposites like life and death and the pre-colonial past versus the post-industrial present. Magic realism differs from pure fantasy primarily because it is set in a normal, modern world with authentic descriptions of humans and society. In magic realism, the magical elements are blended into a realistic atmosphere in order to access a deeper understanding of reality. These magical elements are explained like normal occurrences that are presented in a straightforward manner which allows the real and the fantastic to be accepted in the same stream of thought. It has been widely considered a literary and visual art genre; creative fields that exhibit less significant signs of magic realism include film and music. -

It is a heady introduction to Magical Realism. The book is enjoyable and easy to read, yet offers many levels of understanding that allows the 12th grade common assignment with its critical lenses to be successfully applied. The Enduring Understanding that guided our lesson planning was the understanding that there are different ways of seeing. We want students to see that there is no absolute truth, that versions of “the truth” are dependent on a person’s viewpoint.
