BMW Gets It Right with Pricing, Performance, Style of New 2011 X3 xDrive28i

BY KEITH GRIFFIN

Count me among the few auto journalists who was not impressed by the BMW X3 when it was first introduced back in 2004. It had a cramped feeling to it and the styling did nothing for me but that has all changed with the second genera- tion of the sporty crossover utility vehicle. Simply put, the BMW X3 is a stun- ning vehicle to behold. That struck me one night around dusk in the grocery store parking lot as I approached the compact SUV from the passenger side. The sharp creased swooping line that drops from the top of the D pillar at the rear to the front wheel well snapped my mind off the mundane chore of shoving a grocery cart packed full of food. But don't take my word for it. The X3 won a "red dot" worldwide design award honorable mention for its combination of a flat front end with a raised rear end that cre- ates a dynamic wedge shape when viewed from the side. The side profile of the 2011 BMW X3 is striking. In addition, it comes with a new 8-speed automatic transmission and other enhanced technology.
