  • 461 Indians on the Bolivian Side Pomaratu. They Climbed to Its Top
CLIMBS AND EXPEDITIONS 461 Indians on the Bolivian side Pomaratu. They climbed to its top on October 12, placing only one camp at 17,000 feet. As far as is known, Parinacota (20,768 feet) had been climbed twice before. Pomarata, which seems to be the correct name (20,473 feet) was claimed as a first ascent by Bolivians in 1946, but there is no certainty of this climb. The top of Pomarata is heavily glaciated. OSCAR GONZALEZ FBRRAN, Chb Andho de Chile Argentina El Tore. A most extraordinary find was made by two climbers, Erich Groch and Antonio Beorchia, when on January 28 they made what they had assumed would be the first ascent of El Toro (20,952 feet), in the Province of San Juan. On the summit they found what appeared to be a human head lying on the surface. When they tried to lift it, they dis- covered it was still attached to a mummified body. They returned with others to retrieve the body, which had been there at least 450 years, a sacrificial victim with a wound at the back of the head. He had been a young man of between 15 to 20 years. He was in a sitting position with his hands crossed below his knees, dressed in gray trousers with red trimmings, a red wool cap and a poncho. Under the body a rat was found, also mummified. Central Argentina. The highest peak in the Mo?zgotes group, a snow and ice peak about 19,350 feet high, was climbed in January by R.

  • Nine on the Summit of Everest I
NINE ON THE SUMMIT OF EVEREST I • NINE ON THE SUMMIT OF EVEREST BY M. S. KOHLI FTER the discovery of Mount Everest, as the highest point on earth, by the Survey of India in 1852, there were as many as twenty-one attempts before ours of 1965 to scale it fourteen full scale ex peditions, four reconnaissance trips and three solo ventures. Three expeditions out of these the British in 1953, the Swiss in 1956 and the Americans in 1963 had succeeded.1 But the challenge of Everest has been continuing, and will continue as long as man and his inborn adventurous spirit survive. And each climb to the 'top of the world' 'vill be as different as the weather and mountaineers can make it. And so it was in 1965; despite two earlier attempts in 1960 and 1962- when our summit parties had fought their way up to reach 28,300 ft. and 28,6oo ft. respectively, only to be beaten back by raging blizzards the clean-washed and sparkling Sagarmatha (the Nepalese name for Everest) presented us with a new thrill, a fresh climb and an unchanged sense of adventure. We were fortunate in sending four successful ropes to the summit, and were lucky that each one of the nine climbers who got to the top returned safely. Our long trek to the Base Camp started from Jaynagar, a town on the Indo-Nepalese border, on February 26. On the seventh day of our march, we reached the forested Jantardham, which rises abruptly above the Sun Kosi, and through an opening of the rhododendrons in blossom we had the first view of Everest and the mountains of the Solu Khumbu region Gauri Sankar (23,440 ft.), Numbur (22,817 ft.), Karyolung (21,920 ft.), Taweche (21,463 ft.) and Kangtega (22,340 ft.).

Since a lot of research and review works had to be done, it would not be possible to present the findings during the current session. He, therefore, said that while a status report on the works being carried out by the Committees would be submitted in the current session, the issues would be deliberated in detail during the next session. He expressed his hope that with the support of everyone concerned, the people in the constituencies would be given clear answers. He pointed out the need for the Speaker and the Chairperson to establish a proper system for submission and deliberation on issues submitted by the Dzongkhag Tshogdus, if possible, from the 13 th Session onwards. He thanked the agencies which provided support and assistance towards preparing for the 12th Session. He reminded the members to bear in mind the interest of the nation and the people, and the wise counsel of His Majesty the King while participating in the debates of the session.
