DT V 708 DT V Closed Caption Data Server Versatile platform for encoding EIA-708 closed captions and related data Encode closed caption files directly from floppy disk Video, Time Code, Simple on-screen Data Status LED’s user interface DTV 708 Features DTV Closed Captioning n Transcodes EIA-608 NTSC Digital television introduces a new standard for closed captioning. The standard, known as captions to EIA-708 DTV EIA-708, provides 9600 bps for caption data compared to 960 bps for NTSC. This tenfold captions increase in bandwidth allows more caption data channels and enhanced display attributes. Plus, DTV closed captioning offers a caption service directory. n Strips caption data from SDI component inputs or In NTSC captioning, two bytes of data are encoded in line 21 of the video signal. In DTV analog composite inputs captioning, data is encoded within the “picture user_data” portion of the video stream. The caption service directory is carried in both the Program Map Table (PMT) and Event n Reads caption files directly Information Table (EIT) of the DTV bit stream. DTV captioning provides a backwards from floppy drive or local compatibility mode where two EIA-608 caption bytes representing NTSC field 1 and two area network bytes representing field two are sent per picture. n Built-in closed caption It is the job of the DTV encoder to embed the DTVCC data into the picture data. Likewise, decoder, LTC time code it’s the job of the DTV transport multiplexer to embed the caption service directory into the reader, bidirectional GPI PMT and EIT. The ULTECH DTV Closed Caption Data Server provides this data to the encoder and multiplexer with the requisite timing, protocol, and packetization. n Easy to use on-screen menus How DTV 708 works n Field upgradable hardware As DTV ramps up, a large portion of programming will be upconverted from NTSC. The and software originating material will likely contain NTSC closed captions which may be transcoded to EIA- n 708 DTVCC captions. The DTV708 has an upstream caption decoder which recovers data from Options: modem, network D1 or composite video sources. The recovered data bytes from line 21 are sent as NTSC interface backwards compatible data, and they are also transcoded to EIA-708 format and sent as DTVCC data. Transcoding is a complex process that involves decoding the NTSC/PAL caption to determine service, placement, attributes, and timing. The desired effect on screen is emulated DTV 708 is ideal for: with EIA-708 commands. Transcoding must be performed quickly in order to preserve caption n Broadcasters timing, so a dedicated Pentium processor is used. n NTSC–to–DTV DTV708 may also receive caption data via modem, RS-232 serial port, network, or USB port in upconversion real time. DTV708 can also encode DTV or NTSC caption data directly from its hard drive. Caption data is transferred to the hard drive by way of the floppy disk, network connection, or n MPEG encoding sites modem. This process is known as off-line encoding and it uses LTC time code to regulate the flow of caption data to the DTV encoder. Evolving Standards Methods for providing DTV closed captioning together with the caption service directory are still evolving. Consequently, DTV708 software may need to be updated occasionally. DTV708’s with the modem option are updated automatically by ULTECH. Units without a modem may be updated from the floppy drive. HDTV Video In this application, DTV708 truly acts as a caption server because the caption data file is encoded from HDTV DTV DTV708’s hard drive. The file to be encoded is VTR / LTC Time code DTV 708 Encoder / Video Closed Caption Data Transport transferred via the floppy drive, modem, or network Server Data Server Multiplexer connection. Caption data is metered to the DTV encoder / multiplexer based on longitudinal time Serial Composite Digital Video code. With HDTV sources, the video circuitry within Interface Interface DTV708 is used only to provide on-screen menus on Monitor a composite analog monitor. Alternatively, on-screen Video Out menus may be displayed on a VGA monitor. Composite Video On-screen Menus Monitor Modular Architecture DTV708 is constructed in modular fashion. All of the major components plug into industry standard slots. The modular architecture allows for easy upgrades. There are slots available for new functions that may be required as DTV operating procedures evolve. DTV708 applications software is also written in modular form to facilitate customization. One possibility is to recover upstream IP Multicast data encoded in the form of NABTS teletext, and forward it to a DTV transport multiplexer as user data. Note that DTV708’s upstream data decoder makes this possible as it can handle nearly any VBI data waveform—not just line 21 caption waveforms. Some encoders receive PMT / EIT data through the same port, others require a serial port together with an ethernet connection. ULTECH DTV708 provides support for both interfaces as well as a USB Universal Serial Bus. ULTECH supports an industry defacto standard for interfacing to DTV encoders. Please contact ULTECH to receive a copy of this protocol. DTV708 is a highly configurable Pentium-based computer and may be programmed to supply data beyond DTV closed captioning, such as PSIP or transcoded teletext data.
