Sarah da Silva Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy King’s College London 2016 Abstract This thesis is an investigation into the formation of white belonging in South Africa, focalised through what I call the institutions of literary colonialism – the public library, the postal service, and the colonial press. I also use George Eliot and Anthony Trollope, both of whom had personal connections to South Africa, as case studies. Their interactions with the three institutions of literary colonialism allow me to situate their works within the colonial institutional setting of which they formed a part, and also facilitate an investigation into how the exercise of white power over the indigenous African population was aided by literary and cultural institutions. However, rather than tracing a history of white settlement in the Cape, this thesis argues that white belonging was founded on a sense of unsettlement and ambivalence, which was articulated through the institutions of literary colonialism. At the heart of this project is a tension between the Cape colonists’ desire to imitate and emulate British literary practices, whilst at the same time begin to articulate a sense of ‘colonial nationalism’ though the development of white settler literary culture, institutions and forms of knowledge. I argue that this tension was the driving force behind the development of the Cape’s literary culture. Whilst the remoteness and insularity of the Cape meant that its cultural institutions were dependant on imported metropolitan cultural norms and products, its distance from the metropole also enabled the development of a distinct and unique literary culture. They dream of a better life in big cities but struggle with low–paying jobs. These struggling “elites” have become the fourth weak social group, after peasants, migrant workers and unemployed people. The reason why these college graduates are compared to ants is that they are like ants: clever, hardworking, politically weak and living in groups. The real world is always different from the ideal world of the “Ant Tribe” in China. They often lose their purposes in a complex society. It is more important for them to recognize the distance between the real and imaginary in order to rethink whether it is a right choice to stay in a big city and try to realize their dreams.

Introduction This paper will attempt to bring to light a new study proposed by Professor Anil Hira in the field of bioeconomics studies. Though other nonhuman social societies, such as honeybees, can be used to draw parallels to human societies, in this paper I will focus specifically on ant social societies that are more “than a hundred million years older than humans” (Gordon, 2010, p.1). The reason I have decided to study ants and human societies is because both societies are the two most successful social organizations on the planet. Ants are one of the “most highly social of all organisms” (Wilson, 1991, p. 14) and dominate the insect world. Furthermore, like humans, ants succeed because they communicate effectively and efficiently (Hölldobler & Wilson, 1994). There is abundant literature on biological studies of ants; in the research for this literature review, I have selected some noteworthy literature on ant behaviour that I believe will 1 help to initiate a discussion on ant behaviour.     46 STRATEGIC MILITARY COLONISATION: THE CAPE EASTERN FRONTIER 1806–1872 Linda Robson* and Mark Oranje† Department of Town and Regional Planning, University of Pretoria Abstract The Cape Eastern Frontier of South Africa offers a fascinating insight into British military strategy as well as colonial development. The Eastern Frontier was for over 100 years a very turbulent frontier. It was the area where the four main population groups (the Dutch, the British, the Xhosa and the Khoikhoi) met, and in many respects, key decisions taken on this frontier were seminal in the shaping of South Africa. This article seeks to analyse this frontier in a spatial manner, to analyse how British settlement patterns on the ground were influenced by strategy and policy. The time frame of the study reflects the truly imperial colonial era, from the second British occupation of the Cape colony in 1806 until representative self- governance of the Cape colony in 1872. Introduction British colonial expansion into the Eastern Cape of Southern Africa offers a unique insight into the British method of colonisation, land acquisition and consolidation. This article seeks to analyse the British imperial approach to settlement on a turbulent frontier. The spatial development pattern is discussed in order to understand the defensive approach of the British during the period 1806 to 1872 better.     TIMELINE FOR PORT BEAUFORT & MALGAS 1488: The Portuguese recognized the Breede River Mouth as the finest natural anchorage on the whole southern seaboard of Africa. 1576: King Sebastian’s navigator, Manuel De Mesquita Perestrello called the bay, St. Sebastian’s Bay, after “Dom Sebastiao, the most serene King of Portugal”, and the west bank “Cape Infanta”. 1790: San Sebastian Bay was surveyed by the French sea captain, Captain Duminy. 1798: During May, the Breede River mouth was visited by Lady Anne Barnard and her husband, who was Colonial Secretary under the British Administration, with Jacob Van Reenen of Slang River. 1800: Landrost Anthonie Faure reported to Governor Sir George Young that the river was suitable for navigation “up to six hours inland, with excellent safe loading – places for small vessels along either bank”. 1802: Baron Von Buchenröder visited San Sebastian’s Bay, crossed the river in a small boat and pronounced it “only three to four feet deep at low tide, thus only suitable for sloops and long flat vessels, such as one sees on the Main, Nekker and Weser in Germany”. He also found an English ship anchored in the Breede River. 1803: Dirk Gysbert Van Reenen gave the same advice (as Baron Von Buchenröder) to General Janssens. 1813: Malagas got its name from the farm belonging to Adriaan Odendaal, “Malagas Craal gelegen aan de Breede River” which took its name from a former Khoikhoi Chief. 1817: It was found that the bar was navigable by vessels displacing not more than six feet of water. Lord Charles Somerset named the east bank of Breede River after the title of his father, the 5th Duke of Beaufort.

    ﻣﺠﻠﺔ دراﺳﺎت دﻳﺴﻤﺒﺮ 2015 British Intervention in Afghanistan and its Aftermath (1838-1842) Mehdani Miloud * and Ghomri Tedj * Tahri Mohamed University ( Bechar ) Abstract The balance of power that prompted the European powers to the political domination and economic exploitation of the Third World countries in the nineteenth century was primarily due to the industrialization requirements. In fact, these powers embarked on global expansion to the detriment of fragile states in Africa, South America and Asia, to secure markets to keep their machinery turning. In Central Asia, the competition for supremacy and influence involved Britain and Russia, then two hegemonic powers in the region. Russia’s steady expansion southwards was to cause British mounting concern, for such a systematic enlargement would, in the long term, jeopardize British efforts to protect India, ‘the Crown Jewel.’ In their attempt to cope with such contingent circumstances, the British colonial administration believed that making of Afghanistan a buffer state between India and Russia, would halt Russian expansion. Because this latter policy did not deter the Russians’ southwards extension, Britain sought to forge friendly relations with the Afghan Amir, Dost Mohammad. However, the Russians were to alter these amicable relations, through the frequent visits of their political agents to Kabul. This Russian attitude was to increase British anxiety to such a degree that it developed to some sort of paranoia, which ultimately led to British repeated armed interventions in Afghanistan. Through the lens of postmodern theory, the thesis explores the concept and essence of liberal arts education as reflected in the curriculum of the Christian universities through a qualitative methodology, focusing on the analysis of historical archival material.
