Howard Wilson Emmons Was Spread Upon the Permanent Records of the Faculty
At a meeting of the FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES on May 16, 2006, the following tribute to the life and service of the late Howard Wilson Emmons was spread upon the permanent records of the Faculty. HOWARD WILSON EMMONS BORN: August 30, 1912 DIED: November 20, 1998 Howard Wilson Emmons, Gordon McKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus, and Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, the father of and a leading contributor to modern home fire research, died in his 86th year on November 20, 1998. Before Howard and his many doctoral students and visiting fellows conducted their path- breaking body of fundamental fire science research, the primary approach to home fires was to develop techniques for fire suppression. When discussing fires in homes, Howard often reminded us that to make a fire requires more than just fuel for combustion; it depends on the overall arrangement of the combustible materials as well as on their material properties. He often said that every Boy Scout knows that one dry log by itself does not make a campfire, but a triangular arrangement of three logs with kindling makes a nice one. It was the overall interaction among all of the ingredients of a fire-combustion, the convection of the hot gasses, the products of combustion, radiation among the components and to other objects nearby, control of the air supply, and lastly the chemistry of the reactions––that fascinated Howard over the last decades of his long and productive research career. He was born on August 30, 1912, in Morristown, New Jersey, and educated in local public schools. -

INTRODUCTION Post-earthquake fires are considered to be one of the important factors that enlarge the damage when a densely inhabited urban area is hit by a severe earthquake. It will be necessary to have a means for predicting the behavior of urban fires in order to explore the measures to effectively mitigate the damage caused by such post-earthquake fires. Several models are already available in Japan for the purpose of predicting the fire spread in urban areas. It can be said that these models were developed based on the model so-called "Hamada formula", which 1 was introduced by Hamada, Emeritus of University of Tokyo more than 50 years ago' ’. -

Emmons Papers MS 06 Personal Papers ABSTRACT Howard Emmons, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Harvard University for forty years, was a leader in fire research and fire safety science in the second half of the 20th Century. This collection includes his papers and reports, including reports of the Home Fire Project, and papers and reports by others in the fire safety science field. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Howard W. Emmons was born in Morristown, N.J. Aug. 30, 1912. He received Master of Engineering and Master of Science Degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology, in 1933 and 1935 respectively. He received his Doctor of Science degree from Harvard University in 1938. After two years at Westinghouse Electric and one at the University of Pennsylvania as Associate Professor, Emmons came to Harvard University in 1940. He became Gordon McKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering there in 1949, and in 1966 became Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering. He retired from Harvard in 1983. Professor Emmons was married and had three children. He lived in Sudbury, MA for many years, and was chairman of the Lincoln-Sudbury School Committee (1954-1968) and a town selectman (1969-1972). Emmons' focus throughout his career was on fire safety science, and he was on the leading edge in this field. He re-created furnished rooms in his laboratory and observed them burning. He developed mathematical models for predicting fire spread, and later the Harvard Computer Fire Code. He chaired the National Academy of Science's Committee on Fire Research, and helped bring about the passage of the National Fire Research and Safety Act of 1968. -

Memorial Tributes: Volume 10 HOWARD W.EMMONS 77 HOWARD W.EMMONS 1912–1998 BY HOWARD R.BAUM AND GEORGE F.CARRIER HOWARD WILSON EMMONS, the former Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering at Harvard University, died November 20, 1998, in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He was active in the field of fire safety science, a subject shaped largely through his own efforts, until shortly before his death. Professor Emmons was born August 30, 1912, in Morristown, New Jersey, the son of a carpenter. He attended local public schools and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1933, followed by an M.S. degree from the same institution in 1935. He spent the years 1935 to 1937 at Harvard University, obtaining a doctor of science degree in 1938. He was employed by the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company from 1937 to 1939 in the development of steam turbines. After one year as an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the faculty of Harvard University in 1940 and remained there until his retirement in 1983. The accomplishments and contributions Professor Emmons made to engineering span a variety of fields. He was a leader in compressible flow research, discovering the basic propagating blade stall process responsible for the unsteady destructive performance of turbocompressors at low flow rates.
