OBITUARY ARTHUR PEEL All at the club were very sorry to learn of the recent death of former player Arthur Peel who continued to live locally after playing for Wealdstone.

Arthur made 128 appearances for Wealdstone between 1961 – 1966 and scored 15 goals

He is particularly fondly remembered as Arthur was a Harrow school teacher. Steve Marshall who was a pupil in Arthur’s school remembered ‘ He was sports master at Harrow Weald Grammar School throughout my time there and was very influential in so many pupils sporting development, particularly soccer and athletics. He coached my sister to win the Middle- sex schools mile one year. He was always tough but fair and certainly didn’t stand any nonsense from pupils!

Roger Slater provided this great extract written by Arthur from ‘The History’

Arthur Peel Player 1961-1965 I came from Manchester originally, and came south to further my football career. I played for Wealdstone from 1961 to 1964 and there were some great highlights during those years, win- ning the Middlesex Senior Cup, the Middlesex Charity Cup and the London Senior Cup (jointly with Wimbledon). I was privileged to play with some great players such as Viv Evans, Charlie Townsend, Ron King, Tony Knox and many, many more. There was one game that has a particular memory - it was just after ‘the big freeze up’ of 1963, and we were to play away at Barnet. The pitch had been frozen solid in the morning, and Barnet had tried to thaw the pitch out by burning car tyres on the surface - dozens of then spread all over the surface. They succeeded in getting the game under way but at the game pro- gressed we found this horrible black ‘goo’ sticking to us every time we fell over or tackled etc. At the end of the game every single piece of kit, our socks, shirts and shorts had to be thrown away. It just was not pos- sible to clean - the ‘goo’ had started to set! It even took us all as players ages to clean it off in the bath afterwards. I always wondered how many strips were un-usable after being worn in Barnet’s matches after our game. But it’s still funny looking back on it after so long. We played a game against Arsenal (07/10/63) and drew 1-1- they had put out some good players in their side. Afterwards, Billy Wright, the Arsenal manager at the time threw a major ‘wobbly’ in the dressing room, which we could hear it through two sets of closed doors! We also played a very strong Chelsea side, (04/09/62), that was in the Battle of Britain Cup, and we beat them in front of a crowd, which was, according to local newspaper reports, well over 3,000. The support then was even better than Weald- stone’s support today! They were always exceptional. WEALDSTONE v CHELMSFORD

Our club’s excellent progress on the pitch and ever increasing attendances mean we are now looking to strengthen our matchday support team. In particular, we are looking to add to our matchday steward team, with the possibility of gaining nationally recognised quali cations (such as Level 2 or 3 NVQ in Spectator Safety) through our partners Total Hospitality Training. You’ll be contributing to the progress of your club and learning transfer- rable skills in health and safety, security and customer services; while strengthening your CV at the same time. It doesn’t have to be every match, but it would be great if we could increase our pool of available people to ensure our spectators have an enjoyable matchday experience and enhance our club’s growing reputation for professionalism. If you’re interested to learn more about what is involved and how you can benefit, please speak to me. Steve Marshall, Matchday Operations Manager
