On January 28, 2009, Johnson C. Smith University President, Dr. Ronald L. Carter named Steven Aycock as the 20th head football coach in Golden Bull history.

Aycock embarks on his fourth season as the Golden Bulls’ head football coach. He led JCSU to their first postseason victory since 1969 with a victory in the 2011 Pioneer Bowl. Aycock coached the Golden Bulls to a 6-5 record in 2011; the first winning season at Johnson C. Smith University since 2006.

Aycock has over 17 years of coaching experience as an assistant and offensive lineman coach. He has brought enthusiasm, passion, tenacity, and a thorough understanding of football from various aspects. “I am determined to make Johnson C. Smith football a powerhouse in the CIAA and in Division II football,” says Aycock. “I will utilize my opportunity to showcase my knowledge of the game through my coaching experiences and develop our student-athletes into better players and people.”

As a part of the previous football coaching staff in 1996, Aycock helped the Golden Bulls orchestrate an impressive 7-3 record, the first time in 15 years that the program recorded a winning season. Aycock not only brings a new energy to Golden Bull football, but he symbolizes a new era at JCSU. He is determined to guide the program in the direction of conference championship contenders and an elite in Division II . versus Shaw Saturday, October 20, 2012 | 1:00 pm ET

The Golden Bulls immediately scored on the opening drive of the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) crossed the goal line off a one yard keeper to put JCSU ahead 28-10. The Broncos responded with a touchdown drive of their own. A botched snap resulted in the holder scrambling and scoring a two-point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, JCSU manufactured another smart, time-consuming drive for the last score of the contest. The Golden Bulls took five and half minutes off the clock with 11 plays before Wallace found junior tight end Jimmy Drye, Jr. (Concord, NC) in the end zone.

The game was put on ice after Rankin intercepted a pass from Andreas Hudson, which killed a FSU drive with 1:06 left to play.

JCSU recorded 369 yards of total offense of 67 plays. Wallace completed 21-of-28 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns in the air and one TD rushing. Anderson rushed for over 100 yards for the third time this season. He tallied 103 yards and a touchdown off 24 carries, as well as four receptions for 32 yards and a score.

Sophomore safety Kerry Hartley (New Orleans, LA) and freshman linebacker Austin Jacques (Springdale, MD) led the team in tackles with nine apiece. Rankin stood out with a defensive touchdown, an interception, and three tackles. versus Shaw Saturday, October 20, 2012 | 1:00 pm ET

A second recovery led to a touchdown for the Golden Bulls prior to halftime. This time after a seven play offensive drive, junior running back Denzel Hartley (Lithonia, GA) fumbled in the end zone off a four yard run. Junior tight end Jimmy Drye, Jr. (Concord, NC) was alert enough to recover the fumble for the score. The game was knotted up 21-21 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Golden Bulls grabbed their first and only lead of the contest. WVSU quarterback Ricky Phillips lost the handle on a snap in the shotgun formation inside his own 10 yard line. JCSU forced a safety and snatched a 23-21 advantage with 12:17 on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets eventually recaptured the lead with a touchdown at the 2:31 mark of the third quarter. The score remained 28-23 in favor of WVSU going into the fourth. Things really began to look grim for JCSU after another touchdown by West Virginia State with 8:24 left to play.

However, the Golden Bulls quickly responded with a three play touchdown drive of their own. Wallace connected with junior receiver Terrell Hutchison (Chester, SC) for a 16 yard TD pass with 7:09 on the clock. A two-point conversion attempt was successful with a pass from Wallace to Drye over the middle. JCSU drew within one possession (34-31) with the score.

Johnson C. Smith regained one final offensive possession in the last 90 seconds of the contest. On a second and three from the WVSU 45 yard line, Wallace was sacked for a loss of 10 to make it third and long. The Golden Bulls failed to convert and WVSU sealed the season opening win.

Junior defensive back Damion Miles (Beaufort, SC) and senior linebacker Michael Coats (Greenwood, SC) each had a team-high eight tackles. However, Darius Wallace was the defensive standout with six tackles including a sack and a blocked punt. Wallace also performed punting duties. He had seven punts with a long of 55 yards and two punts inside the 20 (one that was downed at the two yard line). versus Shaw Saturday, October 20, 2012 | 1:00 pm ET 2012 GOLDEN BULLS FOOTBALL AVAILABLE LIVE THROUGH WGNC 1450 AM RADIO
