DrDr.. Burnim has also led the development of a campus computer network, and has established strong fi scal integrity. To improve operational effi ciency, Dr. Burnim is credited for having reorganized the university into four schools: Arts and Humanities; Business and Economics; Education and Psychology; and Mathematics, Science, and Technology. Addition- ally, he has directed the development of a comprehensive enrollment management and marketing plan, which, in fall 2005, yielded for the third consecutive year the highest enrollment in the university’s history. In 2001, he began the oversight of the largest construction and renovation project ($46.3 million) ever undertaken at ECSU, including the construction of a physical education/fi eldhouse facility, a student center, and a new residence hall. In 2004, he celebrated the opening of the university’s fi rst privatized student housing facility. Dr. Burnim is an economist having earned three degrees in economics — a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from The University of North Texas, and a Ph.D. from The University of Wisconsin at Madison. His fi elds of specialization are public fi nance and labor economics. Dr. Burnim has written papers and published several scholarly articles in these areas. Prior to joining Elizabeth City State University, Dr. Burnim served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Af- fairs at North Carolina Central University. Earlier in his career, he worked as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs in the General Administration of The University of North Carolina; as a staff economist at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and as a faculty member and researcher at The Florida State University. Dr. Burnim serves on several local boards, including the Elizabeth City branch of the Wachovia Advisory Board, Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth City Rotary Club, Salvation Army, and Albemarle Economic Development Commission. Nationally, he serves on the NAFEO Board of Directors, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Board of Directors, the American Council on Education – Commission on Advancement of Racial and Ethnic Equity, and the System and Computer Technology (SCT) Executive Advisory Council. Recently, he accepted an appointment from Executive Council of the Commission on Colleges to serve on the Principles Review Committee, which is charged to study the Commission’s current standards. North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Prior to the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865, the majority of African Americans in the United States were enslaved persons living in the southern states. Education for African Americans was sparse, especially in the South with laws such as North Carolina's that prohibited teaching enslaved persons to read and write. It was a rare occurrence for an African American to be literate. While there were a few schools dedicated to African American education in the North prior to the Civil War, the first college available to African Americans in the South was Shaw University, which opened its doors in 1865. A number of institutions dedicated specifically for the education of African Americans were founded in the era immediately following the Civil War and others followed when segregation limited equal access to education. These schools are often known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or "HBCUs". North Carolina has twelve historically black colleges and universities, including the oldest in the South, Raleigh's Shaw University, founded in 1865, and North Carolina's newest HBCU, North Carolina Central University, founded in 1910 in Durham. Ten of these schools continue to operate today. The history begins with a section on the education of Blacks before 1800, a period in which there is little evidence of formal education for African Americans despite the presence of relatively large numbers of free Blacks thronghout the state. A section on the education of Blacks from 1800 to 1900 describes the first formal education of Blacks, the founding of the first Black Catholic order of nuns, and the beginning of higher education in the state after the Civil War. There follow sections on each of the four historically Black institutions in Maryland covering the founding and development of each, and their responses to social changes in the 1950s and 1960s. A further chapter describes the development and manipulation of the Out of State Scholarship Fund which was established to fund Black students who wished to attend out of state institutions for courses offered at the College Park, Maryland campus and other White campuses from which they were barred.

He has been a part of the Morris College family for twenty- five years. Dr. Staggers joined the faculty of Morris College in 1993 as an Associate Professor of English and was later appointed Chairman of the Division of Religion and Humanities and Director of Faculty Development. For sixteen years, he served as Academic Dean and Professor of English. As Academic Dean, Dr. Staggers worked on all aspects of Morris College’s on-going reaffirmation of institutional accreditation, including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Staggers remains committed to teaching. He frequently teaches English courses and enjoys working with students in the classroom, directly contributing to their intellectual growth and development. Prior to coming to Morris College, Dr. Staggers served as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor of English, and Director of Faculty Development at Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. This letter is a summary of the various Zoom meetings where we shared this news before Thanksgiving with students, families, faculty, staff and alumnae. As President, I am not only responsible for supporting the education, training, and leadership skills of women attending Bennett but also ensuring the health and safety of all students, faculty, and staff. Mr. Morrison was named one of U.S. Black Engineer Magazine’s Most Important Blacks in Technology for six consecutive years (2005- 2010), as well as Computerworld Magazine’s Premier 100 IT Leaders and is recipient of the Epsilon Award for Career Achievement from the National Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) organization. Morrison earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Science from South Carolina State University and Master’s Degree in Science from Northwestern University. Williams an- nounced Kermit Blount as the new head coach of the Hornets on Feb. 4, 2011. Blount brings 27 years of collegiate coaching experience to hc Delaware State University - including 16 as the head football coach for Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. Head Coach It didn’t take long for Blount to earn the respect of the Hornet First Season players and the Delaware State University family. He quickly became an ambassador for the university and the football pro- Winston-Salem State ‘80 gram throughout the region, in addition to establishing new academic, training, practice and accountability policies for the Richmond, Va. team. Along the way, he found time to attract a top-notch staff of assistant coaches and support personnel to DSU. His 17 sacks are a single-season franchise record. • Jones had at least one sack in 13 games this season, the most in franchise history.
