  • Ancient Greek Myth and Drama in Greek Cinema (1930–2012): an Overall Approach
Konstantinos KyriaKos ANCIENT GREEK MYTH AND DRAMA IN GREEK CINEMA (1930–2012): AN OVERALL APPROACH Ι. Introduction he purpose of the present article is to outline the relationship between TGreek cinema and themes from Ancient Greek mythology, in a period stretching from 1930 to 2012. This discourse is initiated by examining mov- ies dated before WW II (Prometheus Bound, 1930, Dimitris Meravidis)1 till recent important ones such as Strella. A Woman’s Way (2009, Panos Ch. Koutras).2 Moreover, movies involving ancient drama adaptations are co-ex- amined with the ones referring to ancient mythology in general. This is due to a particularity of the perception of ancient drama by script writers and di- rectors of Greek cinema: in ancient tragedy and comedy film adaptations,3 ancient drama was typically employed as a source for myth. * I wish to express my gratitude to S. Tsitsiridis, A. Marinis and G. Sakallieros for their succinct remarks upon this article. 1. The ideologically interesting endeavours — expressed through filming the Delphic Cel- ebrations Prometheus Bound by Eva Palmer-Sikelianos and Angelos Sikelianos (1930, Dimitris Meravidis) and the Longus romance in Daphnis and Chloë (1931, Orestis Laskos) — belong to the origins of Greek cinema. What the viewers behold, in the first fiction film of the Greek Cinema (The Adventures of Villar, 1924, Joseph Hepp), is a wedding reception at the hill of Acropolis. Then, during the interwar period, film pro- duction comprises of documentaries depicting the “Celebrations of the Third Greek Civilisation”, romances from late antiquity (where the beauty of the lovers refers to An- cient Greek statues), and, finally, the first filmings of a theatrical performance, Del- phic Celebrations.

  • The European Dream: Crisis Narratives Through Film and Photography
FOTOCINEMA, nº 21 (2020) E-ISSN: 2172-0150 | | The European Dream: crisis narratives through film and photography Pablo Echart Universidad de Navarra, Spain [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0626-4827 Paolo Russo Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom [email protected] It took just over ten years for the notion of Europe as an ideal land of progress and integration to start falling apart or, at the very least, sink into a deep crisis. The birth of Europe as an institution dates back to the 1950s when it was first made possible thanks to the bold initiative of its “founding fathers”. General consensus among historians sees the event as the onset of a long time of peace, cooperation between countries as well as unprecedented social and economic growth across the Old Continent. The free movement of people, goods and capital, a common currency, the promotion of symbols, and the introduction of social, cultural and economic policies driven by the institutions of the European Union nourished a consciousness of belonging to a “common home” – albeit without excessive fervour. Or, to borrow a definition coined by Georg Sørensen, a “community of feeling” spread amongst the inhabitants of the new supranational Europe: “a relationship between groups of citizens built around a common history and culture, shared myths, symbols and art” (Liz 2016, p. 17). In her study of the images of Europe found in contemporary cinema, Marian Liz shows a direct relationship between the degree of acceptance of Europeanism and economic trends (2016, pp. 12-13). In the early 2000s a 17 Pablo Echart & Paolo Russo, El “sueño europeo”: narrativas fílmicas y fotográficas de una crisis time of “Euro-euphoria” translated into widespread enthusiasm about the European integration project.

On the same waters, under the same sun and the same sky as the dawn of civilization. After countless incidents and accidents, a stopover in paradise and a sojourn in hell, the magical conclusion of his journey takes place in Paris. Paris, the shining city in the deepest dreams, in the most uncertain sleep of wanderers. EDEN IS WEST attempts to echo the path, the journey of those (once our fathers and mothers) who cross through lands, braving oceans and seas of uniforms, looking for a home. Elias’ story is not that of Ulysses, nor is it Jean-Claude’s or mine. But I see myself in Elias, a foreigner who is not foreign to me. Costa-Gavras INTERVIEW WITH COSTA-GAVRAS France’s most award-winning director Costa-Gavras takes on a theme with deep personal resonance - EDEN IS WEST is the story of an immigrant’s destiny, told with a level of maturity and accuracy only this Greek who has resided in Paris since 1956 could provide.

Abstract: This article focuses on the last phase in the filmography of French-Greek director Costa-Gavras, one of the main references in contemporary political cinema, in which he reveals the fractures of a postmodern Europe from multiple angles.
