Winemaker Chris Pittenger combined mostly Syrah with Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from the winery's 30-acre estate vineyard in the northeast corner of the Russian River Valley appellation.     Structure in Wine steiia thiAst What is Structure? • So what is this thing, structure? It*s the sense you have that the wine has a well-established form,I think ofit as the architecture ofthe wine. A wine with a great structure will often remind me ofthe outlines of a cathedral, or the veins in a leaf...it supports, and balances the fiuit characteristics ofthe wine. The French often describe structure as the skeleton ofthe wine, as opposed to its flavor which they describe as the flesh. • Where does structure come firom? In white wines, it usually comes from alcohol or acidity; in red wines, it comes from a combination of acidity and tannin, a component in the grapes' skins and seeds. Thus, wines with a lot of tannin (like cabernet) also have a lot of structure. Beaujolais is made from gamay which does not have much tannin. As a result, Beaujolais can lack structure; it feels soft, flat or simple in the mouth (though its flavors can certainly still be attractive). • While structure is hard to articulate, you can easily taste or sense it —^and the lack of it. • Understanding structure is critical to understanding any ofthe ''powerful" red varieties: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, nebbiolo, tempranillo, and malbec, to name a few. I just don't think you can understand these wines unless you understand structure, and how it frames and focuses the powerful rush of fruit. It adds freshness, and a "lightness" to the density ofripe fiuit. Structure matters when pairing wine and food. Foods with a lot of structure themselves— like a meaty, thick steak-need wines with commensurate structure (like cabernet), or the food experience can dwarfthe wine experience.

This outstanding vintage began mild followed by a long and dry ripening season in the fall. This enabled us to hang the fruit to reach optimal ripeness without losing acidity or increasing sugars. The wines from 2018 are exceptional in many ways, from the great expression of the whites to the beautiful refinement and complexity of the reds. Enjoy! Almost opaque and ruby/purple-hued, it’s medium to full-bodied and has a layered, elegant texture, sweet tannins, and a great finish. Situated on steep hillsides, these sites lie within the Adelaida District, a sub-appellation in the northwest corner of the wine region. With elevations ranging from 1400 - 2050 ft, limestone subsoils, and extreme diurnal temperature swings, averag- ing 45 degrees, Adelaida produces wines with distinct expressions of their site. 2017 brought a late winter storm track with a warming spring and an early bud break. This was a labor intensive year for the in-house vineyard crew, utilizing organic farming protocols. Late summer heat lead to low yields of concentrated small clusters, particularly with Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest commenced in the cool early morning hours and upon arrival at the winery grapes were hand sorted and de-stemmed with a final precision optical sorting which identifies and removes imper- fect berries. Fermentation began utilizing indigenous yeast in a combination of concrete tanks stainless steel tanks and barriques. This was followed by a short maceration and finished with 20 months of aging in 60% new French oak. These two powerhouse grapes combine their best properties in this wine: Cabernet’s firm structure and distinctive blackcurrant fruit with Syrah’s hearty, broad textures and fleshy savoriness.

    COLLELEVA Country: Italy Region: Marche Appellation(s): Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Producer: Colleleva Founded: 1984 Annual Production: 12,500 cases Farming: Sustainable As with every region in Italy, the Marche is a world all unto itself. On Italy’s less traveled Adriatic coast, in between Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo, the Marche is relatively sparsely populated, and largely composed of gently rolling hills, green with agriculture, that end along steep limestone bluffs on the coast. This is the home of the Verdicchio grape, whose name comes from the root verde, describing both the greenish hue of the grapes and the resulting wine. The Castelli di Jesi DOC is one of the largest of the zones in which Verdicchio is grown and surrounds the town of Jesi and its ancient fortifications. The vineyards of Colleleva (Colle “hill”, and si Leva, “rises”) lie on the heights of the Marche: about halfway between the Apennine mountains and the coastline of the Adriatic Sea. The combination of eastern sun exposure and the cooling winds from the Adriatic provide an optimal microclimate for balancing ripeness with fresh acidity in the grapes. Verdicchio, also known as Trebbiano di Soave, has been cultivated in the Marche for many centuries. It is capable of making vibrantly fresh and crisp white wines that are a wonderful accompaniment to seafood. The Riserva bottlings can age gracefully. From Colleleva we have a wine in the former camp. During a tasting trip in the Marche, their stainless steel tank vinified Verdicchio was one of the stars among many, many wines tasted. The perfume is entrancing—at once fresh and rounded, and typical of the grape.

And this could be just the beginning, says Peter Richards MW The sTory of syrah in Chile is not a straightforward one. It’s a tale still in the telling, with a murky past, highs and lows, capped by an uncertain future trajectory.     OUR SUB-REGIONS VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DI JESI DOC OVERVIEW Marche's most sought-after grape variety at present is Verdicchio, considered one of Italy's best white varieties, and the primary source of Verdicchio is in the hill towns (castelli) around the city of Jesi in central Marche. The denomination is a mouthful: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC. This wine was once famous for the fish- or amphora-shaped bottles that it came in, and it had a reputation for not being as interesting as the bottles. In today's wine world, where so-so doesn't sell, Castelli di Jesi wineries have dramatically improved the wine's quality, and the kitschy bottle has been replaced by a standard one that fits in a wine rack. The rules of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC wines are fairly simple: the wine must contain at least 85% Verdicchio. However, there are quite a few style and geographic variations. The wine can be still or sparkling, for instance, or it can be made in a sweet dessert style using dried grapes. Wines made in the southern part of the denomination where production first began can use the term Classico on the label, and that area has been subdivided into 99 small parcels whose names can appear on the bottle if the grapes are all from a single parcel. Superiore wines require grapes that are at peak ripeness at harvest. If those variations are not enough, there is also a Riserva version of the still wine that spends at least a year and a half aging.
