Discovery of a Relict Lineage and Monotypic Family of Passerine Birds Discovery of a relict lineage and monotypic family of passerine birds Based on a comprehensive molecular dataset of passerines birds we identified a branch with a single species, the Spotted Wren-babbler Spelaeornis formosus. We suggest that this represents a relict lineage, which we propose should be placed in its own family, Elachuridae. The scientific name Elachura formosa should be used. We analysed of one of the most comprehensive datasets to date of the largest passerine bird clade, Passerida, which comprises c. 36% of the World’s c. 10,500 bird species. We identified 10 primary branches in the tree. One of these primary branches was made up of a single species, the Spotted Wren-Babbler Spelaeornis formosus, which is a small Wren-like bird that occurs in mountains from the eastern Himalayas to southeast China. This species apparently represents an old branch in the large passerine tree, without any close living relatives. There have surely been other relatives on this branch, which have gone extinct. The fact that it resembles wren-babblers and wrens in appearance is either due to pure chance or to convergent evolution, which may result in similar appearances in unrelated species that live in similar environments. We proposed the new family name Elachuridae for this single species. We also suggested that the scientific name Elachura formosa should be used, and the English name be changed to Elachura, to highlight its distinctness. Suborder PASSERES (or POLYMYODI): Oscines (Songbirds) The arrangement of songbirds in the 1970 Checklist (Checklist Committee 1970) was based on the premise that the species endemic to the Australasian region were derived directly from Eurasian groups and belonged in Old World families (e.g. Gerygone and Petroica in Muscicapidae). The 1990 Checklist (Checklist Committee 1990) followed the Australian lead in allocating various native songbirds to their own Australasian families (e.g. Gerygone to Acanthizidae, and Petroica to Eopsaltriidae), but the sequence was still based largely on the old Peters-Mayr arrangement. Since the late 1980s, when the 1990 Checklist was finalised, evidence from molecular biology, especially DNA studies, has shown that most of the Australian and New Zealand endemic songbirds are the product of a major Australasian radiation parallel to the radiation of songbirds in Eurasia and elsewhere. Many superficial morphological and ecological similarities between Australasian and Eurasian songbirds are the result of convergent evolution. Sibley & Ahlquist (1985, 1990) and Sibley et al. (1988) recognised a division of the songbirds into two groups which were called Corvida and Passerida (Sibley & Ahlquist 1990).

Although this trip had a definite bird bias, it was really a general natural history tour. We took our time in observing and photographing whatever we could find, from lemurs to chameleons to bizarre invertebrates. Madagascar is rich in wonderful birds, and we enjoyed these to the fullest. But its mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are just as wondrous and accessible, and a trip that ignored them would be sorely missing out. We also took time to enjoy the cultural riches of Madagascar, the small villages full of smiling children, the zebu carts which seem straight out of the Middle Ages, and the ingeniously engineered rice paddies. If you want to come to Madagascar and see it all… come with Tropical Birding! Madagascar is well known to pose some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, but we enjoyed perfectly smooth sailing on this tour. We stayed in the most comfortable hotels available at each stop on the itinerary, including some that have just recently opened, and savored some remarkably good food, which many people rank as the best Madagascar Custom Tour October 20-November 6, 2016 they have ever had on any birding tour.

Jorgensen Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Lincoln, Nebraska April 2018 Introduction The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (hereafter, Commission) is authorized under the Nebraska Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act (NESCA; Neb. Rev. Stat. § 37-801 to 37-811) to determine what species should be placed on the list of threatened or endangered species maintained under the act. Species that are listed as threatened or endangered federally are automatically placed on the state’s list of threatened or endangered species; however, there are additional unlisted species whose continued existence within our state is at- risk and who are candidates for state listing. The Commission is obligated to conduct a review of species when monitoring data or emerging issues indicate concern. In 2017, Commission staff undertook a review of the state’s wildlife, including plants, to determine whether any species warranted placement on the list or whether any species currently listed as threated or endangered should be removed from the list. The last full review and revision of the list occurred in 2000. The purpose of the current statewide review is to maintain an accurate list of threatened and endangered species, based on the best information available, to help the Commission complete its mission of effectively conserving the wildlife resources of Nebraska. Over the last several months, Wildlife Division staff received input from species’ experts, conducted extensive literature reviews, and coordinated with the Commission’s Fisheries and Planning and Programming divisions to develop a list of species to consider for listing action.

At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome.

    MEGAFARI: Uganda and Rwanda: Shoebill experience, Nyungwe’s Albertine Rift and Great Apes 16 – 27 April 2010 (12 days), Leader: Keith Barnes, Custom trip Photos by Keith Barnes. All photos taken on this trip. The spectacular Shoebill was the star of the show in Uganda, and a much-wanted species by all. Introduction This was the second leg of the Megafari – a true trip of a lifetime for most of the participants. Our Tanzania leg had already been the most successful trip we had ever had, netting an incredible 426 bird species in only 11 days. The main aims of the Uganda and Rwanda leg was to see a Shoebill stalking in deep Papyrus swamps, score a gamut of rainforest birds in both the lowlands of Budongo and then also the impressive montane forests of the incredible Nyungwe NP, and to see primates and of course, the irrepressible great apes, Chimpanzee and Mountain Gorilla. Fortunately, we achieved all these aims, netting 417 bird species on this 12-day leg of the trip, as well as accumulating an incredible 675 bird species and 62 mammals in just over three-weeks of the Megafari. The Megafari was a boon for spectacular birds and we saw 51 species of bird of prey, 11 species of turaco, 11 species of kingfisher, 10 species of bee-eater, 12 species of hornbill, and 25 species of sunbird. We also saw the famous Big-5 mammals and had incredible encounters with Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees amongst 11 species of primates. The food is generally very good and the stores and lodges are for the most part stocked with decent beer and a fair selection of South African wine. However, it is the habitat diversity that is largely what makes Malawi so good from a birding point of view. Even though it is a small country, this good variety of habitat, and infrastructure that allows access to these key zones, insures that the list of specials is long and attractive. Our tour was extremely successful in locating the vast majority of the region’s most wanted birds and highlights included Red-winged Francolin, White-backed Night Heron, African Cuckoo-Hawk, Western Banded Snake

Foreigners and Ex-pats flock there for the beautiful scenery, great infrastructure, and delicious cuisine among other cultural aspects. For birders, it has recently caught up to big names like Borneo and Malaysia, in terms of respect for the avian delights it holds for visitors. Our twelve-day Highlights Tour to Thailand set out to sample a bit of the best of every major habitat type in the country, with a slight focus on the lush montane forests that hold most of the country’s specialty bird species. The tour began in Bangkok, a bustling metropolis of winding narrow roads, flyovers, towering apartment buildings, and seemingly endless people. Despite the density and throng of humanity, many of the participants on the tour were able to enjoy a Crested Goshawk flight by Forrest Rowland lovely day’s visit to the Grand Palace and historic center of Bangkok, including a fun boat ride passing by several temples. A few early arrivals also had time to bird some of the urban park settings, even picking up a species or two we did not see on the Main Tour. For most, the tour began in earnest on November 15th, with our day tour of the salt pans, mudflats, wetlands, and mangroves of the famed Pak Thale Shore bird Project, and Laem Phak Bia mangroves.
