■' ^ed vest-velvet)“5;...... $32.95 (Black w/chècked'vest)’Sizes 24mo-3X On November 20, 1989, the United Nations unanimously adopted a document entitled "The Convention on the Rights of the Child". Many concerns have been raised regarding this document. The Convention establishes: 1. a right to day care (Art 18) 2. a right to free primary education (Art 28) 3. a right to privacy (Art 16) 4. the right to freedom of association (Art 15) 5. freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Art 14) 6. freedom of expression including the right to receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds (Art 13) 7. the right to "family planning education and services" (Art 24) 8. the state shall ensure that the child has access to information and material from a diversity of national and internal sources: in particular through the mass media (Art 17) 9. shall protect the child from mental as well as physical violence and neglect while in the care of parents or guardians (Art 19) 10. However the freedom to manifest one's religion may be "limited" by the state as necessary to protect public safety, order, health or morals or the fundamental rights and Preedc^n of others (Art 14)

There is only one mention of the child before birth - in the preamble, which is the part of the document of no legal affect. These phrases should cause warning bells to go off in your mind. Many precarious rights and responsibilities of parents and families will be undermined or even extinguished by implementation of these terms. The family's responsibility to be the primary educator of their children, to raise their children according to their religious beliefs, a parent's right to protect their children from information and ideas that would threaten their innocence, morality, faith or their senSe of security, would be threatened. Unlike Britain and United States, Canada has signed this document in principle and is waiting for it to be ratified by the provinces. It must hav< unanimous approval from the provinces to be ratified. A meeting to discuss this document further is being held October 4th, 7:30 PM in the Trading Company hall. It is important that we give input to our MLA Jack Ady and Minister of Labor, Elaine McCoy. L.B. A baby shower for Ranae & T. J. MAGRATH MUSIC WEEK For the past several years, band students have sponsored a walk-a-thon to raise money for the Magrath school band program. These funds have been used to purchase a sound system for the band room, uniforms for the marching band, and numerous band instruments, with the growth of the program we have critical need for several of the more expensive concert band instruments, such as French Horns, and Euphoniums. Since a walk- a-thon really has nothing to do with our music program, we have decided to change the format. We're have a PRACTICE-A-THON. During the five day period of Monday, October 21 to Friday, October 25, we are challenging each band student, Grade 7 to 12, to practice a minimum of TEN HOURS! This will include band practices during school, special group practices before and after school, and individual home practice. Band students will be seeking pledges from members of the community for each hour practiced ( a 50£ per hour pledge would total $5.00 if the student reaches the goal of ten hours). Realizing that this event has much more value than a walk-a-thon, we hope you will support the students in this project. Please pledge what ever amount you can.

STRIKE UP THE BAND - Fun Fundraiser just in time for Christmas Please send to school 1, 2, or 3 of your favorite recipes so we can include them in what will be (we're almost positive) an award winning COOK BOCK. We would appreciate the recipes sent in to the school by October 18th. Feel free to include any Ihistory behind your favorites- we'd like to publish it along with the recipe. Also, if you were a member of the band at one time, include favorite memories. PRINT or TYPE your recipes and/or experiences and get them in as soon as possible. THANK Smoked Skinned

ATTENTION: Figure Skating News: The Magrath Figure Skating Club was dormant last year because of lack of interest and too few registrants. This is the last year we will try to keep a club going. We have some working capital in the bank now, which will be donated to other clubs if no one wishes to keep figure skating alive in Magrath. We do not have official ice times booked yet because we need to know how many members we might have. Probably lessons will run 2 nights a week for one hour each night. We may be able to book time immediately after school. Fees will range from $90.00 to $120.00 for the entire ice season. We can offer lessons to follow the Canadian Figure Skating Association Standards or just general public skating lessons. I will help set up the skating year as well as obtain suitable coaches if there are those interested in running the club for the year as it's executive. To register your child (ages 4 and up) please call me at 758-3181. We need at least 30 members and 4 parents as executive members to be able to maintain a club. The Environmental Benefit of Reusable Shopping Bags - Switching to reusable shopping bags that can endure many uses will reduce the sheer number of regular, lightweight bags used in Canada. This will help save some of the petroleum and forest resources currently needed each year to make shopping bags. And every time we use a reusable shopping bag, we help reduce the amount of plastic and paper packaging destined for our municipal landfill sites. Make the environmental choice!
