League Formats

The subject of league structure is something of a perennial, rising again and again for discussion. Hot on the tails of the

Lancashire clubs, who have declared a desire for all club leagues at Level 7 and below, I’ve been led to believe

that it is now an item on the next Cheshire agenda. But why not at Level 5 and Level 6 as well? Martin Jones at Liverpool St.

Helens threw out some interesting thoughts as we contemplated his side going back up into the National Leagues again.

When leagues started in the late 80s they were resided in , which at that time before premierships and

Tries Points Drop Drop Goald championships really was the top league. Jordan Ayrey 15 Martin wasn’t totally enamored with the prospect of a return to the National League structure, partly because of the time Ed Armitage 6 3 7 6 48 involved in travelling to outposts in Yorkshire and the North East and partly because it would eat too much into his other, Jonny Barltrop 11 particularly family, commitments. He also added the negative effect that long distance away matches have on the travelling support. I don’t know exactly how many Wilmslow supporters turned up at Moss Lane but it won’t have been far off a couple of Mike Black 18 2 10 dozen and it won’t be far off a quarter of that when we have to travel to Carlisle. Dominic Clancy 10 1 5 His suggestion would be for a North 1 West league and a matching North 1 East League at Level 5, feeding into National 2 Mike Clifford 17 5 North. Assuming a fourteen club league again, North 1 West at Level 5 would on last Saturday’s rankings include ; - Chester, Craig Cooper 9 3 15 Lymm, Penrith, Rossendale, Waterloo, Burnage, Birkenhead Park, Kendal, Liverpool St. Helens, Sale, Carlisle, Vale of Lune, Angus Crawford 1 Widnes and Wirral.

Sam Cutts 13 3 15 The remaining eight clubs currently in N1W, including Wilmslow, would then find themselves still at Level 6 but in a new , together with the top six from SLC1 and NLC1. How much favour would that proposal find in the Chapel at Wilmslow? Ben Day 18 13 65 Martin also favoured a revamped Bateman League along the lines already suggested in this column and would lend his Alex Donaldson 10 1 5 support to any co-ordinated lobbying group of Conference B clubs. Jack Harrison 4 1 1 8 Let me start by adding my best wishes to Brendan Thomas. His move to Sale falls in line with his other role at Sale Richard Hughes 16 6 30 Academy. Fortunately Rick Jones, Richard Hughes and Craig Cooper were already part of the club’s coaching team so everything should continue with the minimum disruption. Simon Irving 5 We couldn’t have asked anything more from the Wolves in Lawrence James 13 6 30 their first forty minutes at Vale of Lune and when Vale Ben Jones 15 2 10 responded with a vengeance in the second half, Mike Black, Rick Jones and Richard Hughes marshalled a gritty defence to hold on for a 25-24 win. Again the issue of paid professional Danny Jones 8 2 10 players in the league raised its head; Several of the Vale team admitted to being paid, one of them openly explaining that he had moved to Vale for the higher pay on offer. Well our guys got free T Biscuits and a beer after the game and gave much Rick Jones 17 2 10 better value for money, playing from the heart not the wallet. The Vikings meanwhile followed suit with a hard –ground out James Keys 3 performance resulting in a 21-19 win over a strong Sedgley Park team.

Harrison Lewis 2 1 5 Once again I would like to say that how gratifying it is to see a number of young home grown players in the Wolves Rohan Longmore 12 1 1 8 improving their skills and performance week by week in the side. As team manager, my role is to see that there are the minimum of obstacles in the way off all the players and coaches as they strive to the challenges they face. Ollie McCall 13 3 15 Specialists in Domestic Extension Bob MacCallum 14 16 27 102 Back on the 5th. January, it’s fair to say that neither ourselves or Rochdale were at our best after the three week break. It was wet and boggy underfoot and the Wolves spiritedly ground out a 9-6 win in a hard game they could easily have lost Design Johnny Newsom 2 against a Rochdale side who the following week showed their worth by seeing off Vale of Lune. On another day Kirkby Lonsdale may well have sprung a surprise at Carlisle, having enough of the play and sufficient opportunities to have run the home side very close. As it was three first half Carlisle tries, the third one highly debateable Saturday 2nd. February took them clear and KL for all their huffing and puffing in the second half could respond only with a penalty and try. Carlisle then came unstuck, actually probably stuck in the mud, against an improving Leigh who have got back into the Carlisle v Manchester H H H H H H H H H H winning habit. Leigh made a good start scoring two first half tries through fullback Elliot Ryan and hooker Ian Wood. Fleetwood v Leigh H H H A A A A A A A Their pack was going well and No.10 Anthony Bentham prodded them forward with his tactical kicking and a following wind.
