The club were very well represented at Ian’s funeral on Wednesday where over 400 people attended. However, during the rugby season, he was an ever present supporter both home and away coming to Hull on the coach only 8 weeks ago. Like many others who knew Ian, I enjoyed spending February 2 DUKINFIELD 9 Sandal BROUGHTON PARK time with him and was very grateful for the wisdom he shared with me, especially when I became 16 BILLINGHAM Heaton Moor President. March 2 Rossendale STOCKPORT 9 WIRRAL Burnage 16 Turning to todays game, Blaydon have recently played at National 1 (level 3) and are currently sitting in 23 Blaydon MANCHETER 3rd place in the North Premier with six wins and four losses, boasting the second best points points tally 30 Ilkley Dukinfield of 343. On the other hand Wilmslow are still trying to get used to playing rugby at Level 5 with one win April 6 KENDAL HOPE VALLEY 13 Kirkby Lonsdale ASHTON ON MERSEY and nine losses and the worst defensive record in the league!! Added to that we have been playing 20 without a number of key players either unavailable or injured. I hope that we can put out a stronger 27 squad this week against our opponents. I cannot remember us playing against Blaydon before but we have been regular visitors to the North Raging Bull Senior U18 Colts : League C East over the years with many memorable trips to Gosforth, Northern, Percy Park, Tynedale, West September 2 Birkenhead Park L February 3 Hartlepool and Hartlepool Rovers. We do, however, have one thing in common, both clubs produced 9 MACCLESFIELD L 10 BIRKENHEAD PARK 16 Caldy 17 back row players for the Autumn Internationals….. former Blaydon back row, Mark Wilson has made a 23 SANDBACH 24 fantastic start to his England career putting in some great performances and our own Hamish Watson 30 scoring a cheeky but well worked try from the line out for Scotland last weekend. October 7 Lymm March 3 14 SOUTHPORT 10 21 Chester 17 Wilmslow Vikings (2nd XV) narrowly lost to Rochdale 2nd XV 29-31 last week with a disappointing last 28 24 minute score. Clubman of the week must go to Mark Toole who played for the 2’s and just when he 31 thought he had earned a beer was asked to play for the 3’s!! Well done Mark that deserves a beer from November 4 April 7 11 Macclesfield 14 me!! This week the 2nd XV are away at Wirral which as the first team found out last week are a tough 18 CALDY 21 nut to crack. 25 Sandbach 28 December 2 May After losing to Burnage last week, Wilmslow Hawks (3rd XV) are due to play Manchester away.     Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter August 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the twentieth Newsletter of its form to introduce readers to a new season with much to look forward to after a very successful past season. The significant news of the close season is the move away from Paddington Sports Club and securing alternative accommodation for post-match entertainment. Perhaps more significant has been the growth of the Junior Section under the administration of Alex Smart, to the extent that in numbers it now exceeds the senior Club. Our National League teams have been busy introducing new players, including current and immediate past internationals, to boost the determination for improvement in League success. These aspects are covered in greater detail below. With regret In August the Club learned of the untimely death of Robin Francis, regrettably in unexplained circumstances that sadly will give rise to an inquest later in the year. Robin was well-known to those members who played in the Tivoli Road days in Crouch End, where he was, amongst other things, the captain of the 4th XI, eager player and fund raiser. He offered his assistance in the early days of the revival of the Junior Section under Nick Coleman and Richard Chapman. He always gave a warm welcome to newcomers at the Hornsey Club and made them feel accepted. After the move to Paddington, Robin was often seen assisting Joe and Tess McAvoy at the Carlton Tavern and assisting the Club in several ways, including the construction of a much-needed store for goalkeeping kit.

    Adult Future Competition Review Most will recall that there have been a couple of attempts by RFU in recent years to restructure the league pyramid primarily in response to the perceived threats/pressures of: 1. Player welfare – 30 games a season is argued to be too many, so the RFU favour leagues with maximum of 14 and maybe only 12 teams (26 or 22 matches per season) 2. Travel – particularly in the extremities (Cornwall, Cumbria, Kent, Northumberland) – which is said to put too great a burden on players and supporters and has been blamed for clubs dropping out of the league structure (Lancashire breakaway leagues) or making clubs unviable (St Ives). The RFU solution to this is greater regionalisation. Previous attempts to restructure the leagues have been blocked by clubs where the commercial requirements to maximise match day incomes (and related sponsorship etc flows) have led clubs to resist any cut in the number of league games. Wharfedale has consistently argued that we want to play against the best teams we can find and are prepared to travel anywhere, anytime, to play at the highest standard. We have consistently supported the status quo of national league rugby. As a financially sustainable club with good matchday incomes, solid sponsorship/member support and a controlled approach to player wages, we make money on match days so depend on the 15 home games to fund our wider activities. This is in contrast to those less sustainable clubs where player wages exceed incomes, so each match loses money. Despite widespread club opposition, RFU appear determined to force through change to smaller, more regional leagues with fewer games and less travel.
