A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine. -

The Canonization of John Donne
SYDNEY STUDIES The Canonization ofJohn Donne DAVID KEI..LY I In 'The Canonization' John Donne, in the person of the speaker, speculates upon the prospect of his being 'canonized'. He is using the term in the religious sense, of course, but mischievously - by implying that he and his lover will be elevated to the level of saints because they love as they do he is being playful, witty, and just a shade blasphemous. From the beginning the tone is provocative: For God's sake hold your tongue, and let me love, Or chide my palsy, or my gout, My five grey hairs, or ruined fortune, flout, With wealth your state, your mind with arts improve, Take you a course, get you a place, Observe his honour, or his Grace, Or the King's real, or his stamped face Contemplate; what you will, approve, So you will let me love.1 A poem which takes a theological term for its title - 'The Canonization' - and then begins with a blasphemy - 'For God's sake' - is clearly playing a number of ironic games with its readers. Dramatically, the speaker appears exasperated at being continually reprimanded for his amorous life and so here he responds, not by apologizing for it but rather by mischievously pleading for the social world at large to permit love to exist in some small comer of its realm, devalued and frowned upon though it be. For this is a world that values everything above love - it is a world of affairs in every sense but the romantic. Nevertheless, the speaker is able to imply that this system of value is questionable, for this world of affairs is clearly one of sycophancy, cupidity, and hypocrisy: 'With wealth your state, your mind with arts All quotations are from The Complete English Poems, ed. -

The Hidden History of Women in Astronomy Michael McEllin 1 Introduction What is the Sun made of? One hundred years ago our physical samples consisted of the Earth itself and a few meteorites, mostly rocky, with a few metallic and some rare `carbonaceous' examples containing volatiles. Fur- thermore, spectral lines in the Sun's light showed that many of the chemical elements discovered on the Earth were indeed also present on the Sun. Why would you believe that its composition was radically different to the Earth's, especially when the prevailing theories of Solar System origin had them be- ing formed from the same primeval stuff? There was even a just about tenable theory that the steady accretion of meteorites onto the Solar surface might release enough gravitational energy to keep it hot. What alternative was there? Sir Arthur Eddington had indeed speculated that Einstein's E = MC2 hinted at the possibility of extraordinary energy sources that might power the sun but we were still a decade away from understanding nuclear fusion reactions: Eddington's speculation may have been inspired but it was still vague speculation. Spectral lines were, in fact, still something of a mystery. We did not know why some spectral lines were so much more prominent than others or why some expected lines failed to appear at all. Until Bohr's model of the atom in 1913 we had no understanding at all of the origin of spectral lines, and there were clearly many missing bits of the puzzle. If you do not fully understand why lines look the way they do line how can you be certain you understand the conditions in which they form and relatively abundances of the contributing chemical elements? Atomic spectra began to be really understood only after 1925, when the new `Quantum Mechanics', in the form of Schr¨odinger'sequation, Heisen- berg's Matrix Mechanics and Dirac's relativistic theory of the electron re- placed the `Old Quantum Theory'. -

Barya ___________________________ Thesis Advisor Dr. Evan Gurney Hober 2 “T’our bodies turn we, then, that so Weak men on love revealed may look; Love’s mysteries in souls do grow, But yet the body is his book” (69-72). For John Donne, the spirit and the flesh are elements which are intrinsically linked. Here in his poem, “The Ecstasy,” for example, Donne presents an image of the mingling of body and soul between two lovers. Donne has spent seventeen stanzas of the poem demonstrating that love grows through the connecting of the souls, elaborating in painstaking detail the Neoplatonist1 ideal of transcending the body through love. Here at the end, however, he finally shows that though love “in souls do grow” (71), it is ultimately written on the body, which is the book. Despite his interest in Neoplatonism, Donne asserts that spiritual ecstasy is incomplete without a physical basis. The couple becomes one entity as their souls combine, but this unification is impossible to obtain without the connection of their bodies. For Donne, love starts and ends with the body; it is what unites them. -

Wie er sein Publikum zur materiellen Genügsamkeit, zur Zufriedenheit und zum Ver zieht auf das Streben nach Reichtum auffordert, so begnügt auch er sich intellektuell mit bereits vorliegenden Erkenntnis sen und Aussagen früherer Denker. Er ist in dieser Hinsicht ein ae'Xovf1pvo~ <Ol~ :n:aeov(]t (38, 10-11; 41, 12) und damit wohl auch ein echter Kyniker. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt findet die Ab neigung der Kyniker gegenüber eigener wissenschaftlicher For schung bei Teles eine quasi-moralische Rechtfertigung. Denn Forschen impliziert das Eingeständnis mangelnder "Autarkie" und ist daher mit dem Ideal der Selbstgenügsamkeit nicht zu vereinbaren. CHAPTER V EDUCATIONAL PROVISION IN WALES PART (i) : SCHOOLS In medieval Wales it was the Church which assumed the greatest responsibility for schooling, bardic schools and possibly the households of the Welsh lords being also centres of learning. The English universities, and to a lesser extent, the continental universities and the inns of court, provided further or higher 1 education for the ablest talents of Wales. In England, by the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, lay involvement in educati4n increased, as the needs of the Crown, the aristocracy and the towns expanded, and this was also faintly apparent in as scattered and 2 rural a society as Wales. The revival of classical learning emphasised anew the educational qualities required of administrators and all useful members of the state and which were also to be expected of gentlemen. At a time of social change, in Wales as in England, education became a 3 means of asserting and of reinforcing social distinctions. Neither the schools nor the universities were particularly suited 4 to the task of preparing young gentlemen. The newer grammar schools tried tEadapt, and there were a few signs that the universities and the inns of court, though still largely institutions of professional instruction, made some concessions towards providing a more general and 5 popular education. The essential conservatism of these places meant 6 that they were not in the van of intellectual progress. Rather, they were places for disseminating received and accepted truths intermixed with north European humanism and religious ideology, giving force to 333. 7 the ideal of wise and moral service and leadership. -
