More than 1,000 nominal species bear simple plesiomorphic shells, whose variability is high and overlapping between the taxa, and the soft part morphology and anatomy of the group is simplified because of miniaturization, and unified, as a result of necessary ad- aptations to the life in freshwater habitats (osmoregulation, internal fertilization and eggs rich in yolk and within the capsules). The ad- aptations arose parallel, thus represent homoplasies. All the above facts make it necessary to use molecular markers in species dis- crimination, although this should be done carefully, considering ge- netic distances calibrated at low taxonomic level. Molecular studies on their relationships confirmed the distinctness of this family. Their monophyly, however, remained doubtful, since the Moitessieriidae did not form a distinct clade in the phylogenetic tree based on the most commonly applied mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and the representative of the family Cochliopidae occupied a position among the moitessieriid clades. In the present paper two new nuclear loci, namely histone H3 gene and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ITS2, have been applied to resolve the status of the Moitessieriidae. -

A few minute Belgrandiella-like gastropods were found in three springs in Georgia. Molecular markers: mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear histone (H3) were used to infer their phylogenetic relationships. The phylogenetic trees placed them most closely to Agrafia from continental Greece. The p-distances indicated that two species occurred in the three localities. Two specimens from Andros Island (Greece) were also assigned to the genus Agrafia. The p-distances between the four taxa, most probably each representing a distinct species, were within the range of 0.026–0.043 for H3, and 0.089–0.118 for COI. KEY WORDS: spring snail, DNA, Georgia, Andros, phylogeny INTRODUCTION The freshwater gastropods of Georgia, as well as Graziana Radoman, 1975, Pontobelgrandiella Radoman, those of all the Caucasus, are still poorly studied; this 1973, and Alzoniella Giusti et Bodon, 1984. New investigations of freshwater habitats in mountainous regions and caves revealed six new species of the Rissooidea in Bulgaria. An identification key of the genera of the Rissooidea of Bulgaria gives an overview of the diversity of this group. The following species are described as new: Strandzhia bythinellopenia sp. n., gen. n., Grossuana slavyanica n. sp., G. derventica n. sp., Radomaniola strandzhica n. sp., Bythiospeum devetakium n. sp., Bythinella rilaensis n. sp. All study localities were within the distribution range of S. fluminensis (Küster, 1852); one was the type locality of S. robici (Clessin, 1890), at which S. robici co-occurred with S. fluminensis. No significant differences were found in the genital characters of all the congeners. There were significant differences in shell characters between the syntopic S. robici and S. fluminensis. The molecular characters indicated relatively high differences (K2P distances about 0.03) among the populations of S. fluminensis, not corresponding with the shell habitus and dimensions. The highest differences (K2P distances about 0.07) were found between the syntopic S. fluminensis and S. robici specimens, which verifies species dis- tinctness of these two lineages. Vol. 14(3): 99–168 MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY, SYSTEMATICS AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTER EVOLUTION IN THE BALKAN RISSOOIDEA (CAENOGASTROPODA) MAGDALENA SZAROWSKA Department of Malacology, Institute of Zoology, Jagiellonian University, Ingardena 6, 30-060 Kraków, Poland (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Morphological characters in 33 Balkan rissooid genera (Adriohydrobia, Adrioinsulana, Alzoniella, Anagastina, Belgrandiella, Bithynia, Boleana, Bythinella, Bythiospeum, Daphniola, Dianella, Emmericia, Graecorientalia, Graziana, Grossuana, Hauffenia, Heleobia, Horatia, Hydrobia, Islamia, Lithoglyphus, Litthabitella, Marstoniopsis, Orientalina, Paladilhiopsis, Parabythinella, Pontobelgrandiella, Pseudamnicola, Pseudobithynia, Pyrgula, Sadleriana, Trichonia, Ventrosia) are discussed and illustrated based on the literature and, where necessary, on the presented additional data. These include shell macrocharacters, protoconch sculpture, soft part morphol- ogy and pigmentation, radulae, stomach, female reproductive organs, male reproductive organs. Based on partial sequences of the ribosomal 18S RNA gene, a molecular phylogeny is presented for all the genera, and based on fragments of CO1 gene in mitochondrial DNA, for all except six genera. Based on the Adams con- sensus tree the two gene phylogenies are summarised and systematics of the group is proposed. Adrioinsulana is considered a junior synonym of Pseudamnicola; Parabythinella a junior synonym of Marstoniopsis; a new name: Radomaniola n. gen. is proposed as a replacement name for the preoccupied -

One of them, represented by two specimens only, has been described based on the shell characters only; with its cytochrome oxidase sequence it has been assigned to the genus Iglica, and to the family Moitessieriidae, Iglica hellenica sp. n. For the other species, represented by 30 collected specimens, the shell, protoconch, radula, head, penis and female reproductive organs have been described; all the morphological characters and cytochrome oxidase sequences have confirmed its assignment to the genus Daphniola (Hydrobiidae: Sadlerianinae), Daphniola magdalenae Falniowski, sp. n.
