Its headquarter is Kolhapur City which is an ancient city. The city is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and is known as 'Dakshin Kashi'. Kolhapur is seat of Goddess Mahalaxmi and is one of the Shaktipeeths mentioned in Indian mythology. 1.1) Location & Geographical Area: Kolhapur is situated on the Pune - Bangalore National Highway No. 4. There are State Transport buses regularly from Kolhapur to Mumbai, Panaji, Miraj, Sangli, Pune, Satara, Sawantwadi, Solapur and several other places. The Kolhapur Municipal Transport service operates in the city, suburbs and nearby villages. Taxis and rickshaws are also available round the clock. 1.2. Topography: 1.2.1) Climate: The climate of the district is temperate in plains and cool in western Ghats. The Eastern region represents dry weather and it experiences hot winds during April and May. The nights over the whole district are generally cool due to the influences of the sea Breezes. 1.2.2. Rain Fall: The Kolhapur district receives its major rainfall from the South West monsoon winds, it also gets some rainfall from thunderstorms during the month of April and May. The rainy season is from June to October. The Western Ghats receives the heavy rainfall and Gagan bavada which receives 5000 mm average rainfall is known as the Cherapunji of the Maharashtra. Shirol and Hatkanangle talukas record poor rainfall around 500 mm 1.2.3. Soil: The physical setting of the Kolhapur district is divided into three main parts namely Eastern ranges, Central ranges and Southern ranges. Eastern and Central ranges have black soil formed from 'lava' and at some places it has large tracks of fertile land. The western ranges are mostly hilly and have red soil. The majority area in the west is under thick forest coverage. 3 1.2.4. Rivers: Panchaganga, Warana, Dudhaganga, Vedganga, Bhogavati, Hiranyakeshi and Ghataprabha are main rivers which flows towards east through western Ghats. The river Panchaganga is formed by the tributaries namely the Kasari, the Kumbi, the Tulsi and the Bhogavati. Krishna river flows in the east on easten border of the district, similarly Tillari river flows on western border to west. 1.3. Minerals of economic value are not found in the district. Mud used for making bricks, sand and metal stone used for construction purpose are the only important minerals found in Kolhapur district. 1.4. Forest: The total forest coverage of the district is measuring 1672 Sq.Km. out of which 563 Sq. Kms. is a Reserved Forest & 417 Sq.Kms. is a Protected Forest. The forest area is about 22% of the total geographical area of the district. There are 3 main types of forest in the Kolhapur district. 1) The Sub-Tropical Evergreen 2) The Moist Deciduous & the Semi Evergreen 3) The Dry Deciduous forest. In Sub Tropical evergreen forest, the principal trees are Jambul, Hirada, Anjan, Surangi, Fanas etc. The ground is covered with the flora mostly consist of Karvi, Brachen & others. In Semi Evergreen & Moist deciduous forest we find Amba, Nana, Sissum, Asana, Kumbhi, Bhava, Kinjal, Ain, Kinnai, Umbar, Biba & others. In Dry Deciduous forest, the above spaces are found in very little quantity. These forest have been classified as Reserve & Protected Forest, the practice of shifting cultivation known as 'Kumari' has caused considerable devastation to the forest. Firewood & grass are the main marketable products from this forest. The other forest products like Kaju Fruit, Shikakai, Silver Cotton, Ani & Wax etc. are received from the above forest. 1.5. Administrative set up. Kolhapur city is the district head quaurter & hence the Collectorate, Zilla Parishad & all the district level offices are situated at Kolhapur. The district consist of 12 tehsils/Block. Each tehsils / Block is having tehsils office & Panchayat Samiti Office. These offices are exercising the administrative as well as all developmental control over the block. As per 2001 census there were 1217 revenue villages. There are 1028 grampanchayat / group grampanchayat. There are 18 cities and 9 Nagar Parishad in the district. 4 2.
