OUR OPINION Say no to aviation academy

e were pleased to hear Florida Gateway College President Lawrence Barrett Wdistance FGC from a recent proposal to build an FAA-certified aviation academy here. It has been shown to be an unworkable idea for a town our size, and the only question is, who’s still pushing this crazy plan and why? Back in the spring of 2017 it was HAECO that was behind such a project. The company sent a top executive here to tell the Chamber of Commerce how grand it would be to have a bona fide aviation academy in Lake City, despite the roughly $3 million price tag. HAECO would get a steady stream of qualified workers and the local economy would get a much-needed boost. Everybody wins. OUTDOORS Breaking clay targets at the Fort White Gun Club

By MONTY STEPHENS Special to the Reporter

I met Joe Hinkle, Match Director at the gate of the Ft. White Gun Club. Hinkle explained every Wednesday if the weather is good, the club has a “Trap” shoot. There are three main venues for shotgun competition, Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. The club has Trap and Skeet. If you are unfamil- iar with Trap or Skeet, these are shotgun games where shooters fire a shotgun at a clay target (clay pigeon) hurled through the air at 40 mles per hour. To make it tougher, the normal routine is to launch two targets from opposing sides, one immedi- ately after the other. Trap and skeet were developed in the United States in the early 20th cen- tury to simulate bird hunt- ing. Within a few years of its inception, it became com- petitive and was refined into a “sport” with official rules and scoring. Just like you see on TV, the shooter calls “pull” and that initiates the clay pigeon launch. Targets are considered “hit” whether a small piece breaks off or COURTESY PHOTOS it is completely shattered by These are the various clay targets used in trap shooting. the shooter. GAINESVILLE --- With fewer than 1,000 of them left in the wild, the Florida torreya tree is on the path to extinction. But now sci- entists have a plan to save it. Last month, scientists from universities, conser- vation groups and govern- ment agencies from across the country spent two days turning their best ideas for conserving this rare tree into a coordinated strategy.
