Propodus about two-thirds as long as merus, with 8-9 movable spines on its inferior margin. Dactylus about one-third as long as propodus, apex simple and acute. Telson twice as long as breadth of its anterior border ; posterior mar­ gin slightly arcuate, half as wide as anterior margin. Dorsal spines moder­ ately large, about 0.3 and 0.6 distance away from the distal end. Remarks : These specimens agree well with published descriptions of A. pacificus Banner (1953) has extensively described and figured the ex­ amples of this species from Hawaii. The association is established at the juvenile stage soon after settlement and maintained throughout their lives. The members of the association are sometimes changed by the movement of the fish between burrows. Pair formation of the shrimp begins at the juvenile stage and the adults usually occur in pairs. Resin casts of burrows and the data on the daily positional change of the entrance of one bur­ row indicate that burrows are extensive enough to come close to the adjacent burrows within the sediment, suggesting that a solitary shrimp has a chance to acquire a mate through the connection of its burrovv vvith the adjacent burro~v.

E-mail: [email protected] *to whom correspondence should be sent Abstract The alpheid shrimpAthanas dimorphus Ortmann, 1894, common and widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific, is reported for the first time from Brazil, representing the first invasive alpheid species in Brazil, and the first species of the genus Athanas Leach, 1816 introduced to the western Atlantic. The present record is based on several specimens collected at two localities in Ceará, Pedra Rachada beach near the town of Paracuru, and Meireles beach in Fortaleza. Athanas dimorphus is very common at the second site, suggesting that a population of this species is now established in northwestern Brazil. An updated list of marine and freshwater decapods accidentally or voluntarily introduced to Brazil is provided. Hof Hacarmel 30820, Israel INTRODUCTION The association between gobiid fishes and burrowing alpheid shrimps was described for the first time by Longley & Hildebrand (1941) from southern Florida. The further study of this partnership was delayed until the intro­ duction of mask and snorkel and SCUBA diving as a tool for collecting material and carrying out detailed behavioural and ecological studies in the marine environment. The first aspect studied was the taxonomy of the gobies, a discipline which still leads the research ofthi association, probably due to the gobie ' diversity and richness in species and circumtropical distribution (Klausewitz, 1960 ; Lubbock & Polunin, 1977 ; Polunin & Lubbock, 1977 ; Yanagi awa, 1978 ; Hoese & Randall, 1982). The first ecological-behavioural studies were made by Luther (1958a,b) and Magnus (1967) in the Red Sea. In the northern Gulf of Elat, Red Sea, the present author has studied goby­ shrimp associations for more than seven years, concentrating on com­ munication, distribution and partner specificity (Karplus, 1970, 1976, 1979, 1981 ; Karplus, Szlep & Tsurnamal, I 972a, 1974, 198 l ; Karplus, Tsurnamal & Szlep, 1972b; Karplus & Vercheson, 1978 ; Karplus & Ben-Tuvia, 1979 ; Karplus, Tsurnamal, Szlep & Algom, 1979 ; Goren & Karplus, 1983). Jn Hawaii a detailed quantitative study was carried out on the communication between two species of shrimps, and one species of go by using both sequence and information analysis (Moehring, 1972 ; Preston, 1978).

Zoogeographic remarks regarding the species are briefly discussed. The Mediterranean caridean shrimp, Processa acutirostris Nouvel and Holthuis, 1957 recently collected from the Turkish Mediterranean coast is a new record for the Turkish Seas. Besides the introduc- tions via the Suez Canal, the most important vectors of introduction are imports for aquaculture purposes and trade. Most marine biota has spread in the south Aegean, while freshwater biota occur mostly in northern Greece. Prime source regions are the Indo-Pacific and America. For all source regions and taxonomic groups considered, the invasion rate has been increasing since the end of the last century, a trend indirectly related to the “tropicalization” of the Mediterra- nean Sea. Although the impact of AAS has been poorly documented, a literature review reveals many cases of formerly considered tropical species (such as the ciguatera causing genus Gambier- discus) in the Mediterranean Sea and specifically in Greek waters, the presence of which might not only affect the ecosystems, but also human health and economic activities, such as fisheries, aquaculture and tourism.
