JULY 2010 7 meal in eight years was not going to kill her, I resolved to call the Coop the next morning. The feed smelled fine, no one could spot anything wrong, and the mare didn’t appear to be sick. I was a little worried that Arlene Adkins, the equine feed specialist at the Coop, might make light of my complaint. After all, Fhin continued to scarf down each ration as if it might be his last. But Arlene took me seriously. “Mares,” she explained, “are more sensitive and will often notice and react if something is wrong.” She asked me to bring back both opened bags of feed as well as any others I had purchased so that I could exchange them for a newer batch. I dutifully obliged, and opened the new bags of feed with high hopes. But, Gigi wouldn’t eat the new feed either. She continued to behave perfectly normally otherwise—grazing enthusiasti- cally outside, chowing down on her hay, and accepting any and all treats. “Try her on an alternative brand,” counseled Arlene, who said she was concerned enough to send the feed out to a lab for analysis. Sure enough, Gigi ate the new feed without hesitation, but I began to worry. What if Fhin was eating bad feed and was insensitive enough not to notice? Visions of colic surgery entered my mind. Three days passed.

Even when Gigi suffered a traumatic fall in pasture a few years ago, damaging two vertebrae in her neck and resulting in neurologic damage, she still managed to consume every last oat out of her feed bin. So it was a shock a few months ago when I watched her sniff her dinner suspiciously and then come over to her stall door as if to say, “Don’t you have anything better on tonight’s menu?” Meanwhile, Fhin, Gigi’s next-door stable- , had no such second thoughts, attacking his modest photo by Denise Connelly portion with an out-sized appetite. Daisy—Our Olympic Prospect By Tim Lewthwaite Daisy is a plump little paint— not the most athletic looking horse you are likely to come across. To look at her you would think she could be a foot taller and a foot thinner! She spends most of her time out in the field grazing, often refusing to come in at night for dinner. Just the other week she spent 20 or so minutes galloping around the field to avoid being brought in. I’ve known Daisy for perhaps

six years now and occasionally give photo by Tim Lewthwaite Jennifer Funk, her owner, the odd Jennifer Funk's little paint, Daisy, who amazed everyone with her great trot work. lesson as she gets ready for a show. Last year we were working on some laterals and encouraging her to pick up her right lead in the canter. Although her canter work isn’t the best, Daisy’s trot can be an absolute pleasure to sit. We had been working on the shoulder-in for sometime, when suddenly it clicked with both Jen and Daisy. What had been a struggle suddenly came very easily and they could both move from shoulder-in to counter shoulder-in in a stride or two at the trot. With the increased engagement of the hind legs, Daisy started to become quite collected and floated around the ring. This inspired Jen to ask one of my favorite questions ever —“Tim, is this what an Olympic horse feels like?” This past week, with Jen out of town, Jenny Hughes and Kristina Lenes hopped on her to give her some exercise. I brought my camera along and snapped some photos as she did some great trot work for both Jenny and Kris. The trot was so smooth Kris was heard to exclaim, “Am I in trot?” with real wonder in her voice. After a fun 40 minutes or so, we had all decided that yes, of all the horses at Merry Acres, riding Daisy is the best approximation that we have of what it feels like to be on an Olympic horse.

JULY 2010 9 May 22-23, 2010 Quality Rides Prevail Despite Rain at PVDA Spring Show By Betty Thorpe After years of good weather for our May Spring Show, the weather gods abandoned PVDA in 2010. Saturday, May 22, was cloudy and cool despite grim forecasts, but Sunday it REALLY rained. I hate to admit it, but my mare gets TERRIBLE scratches. I know when wet spring rains come, so do her scratches. I start treating her as soon as I think the season is upon us, but she always seems to get ahead of me. I have read many articles, used many potions, and have tried many methods to remove the scabs. Some of the scab removal methods are gentle but take a long time. Other methods are too rough, and I take the chance of hurting her (and getting kicked), making the next cleaning session more difficult. I have read about scratching off the scratches with my fingernails; that works, but then I have yucky stuff under my fingernails and fear for my life when she starts kicking (yes, pulling off those scabs hurts!). I recently tried a plastic kitchen scrubber. They have a sponge- like material in the middle (holds water and antiseptic solution) and a plastic woven or knit surface that gives a gentle but effective The Kitchen Scrubber for Scratches

scrubbing effect. You can find them in many colors, and they are cheap ($1 each). The scrubbers are a happy medium between finger- nails and ineffective softer materials. My mare now rarely kicks out during cleaning, so we are both happier. And just about anything in the barn that needs to be cleaned can be cleaned with these wonderful little scrubbers.

Despite the incredible wind, we had a great show this spring. I want to specifically thank Andy Amato, Doug Anderson and Lynn Paxton who all came to the farm at 6 a.m. in order to re-set up the arena. We had set it up on Friday, but the strong winds on Saturday blew everything over. Thank goodness for a recent feed order since we used 11 50 pound bags of feed to hold down the arena for Sunday. If not for those bags, I’m sure we would have had to cancel. Not only did Farmer's Coop get free advertising, but the horses had a great schooling experience! We had a full day of rides scheduled, but unfortunately Columbia Horse Center’s truck broke down on the way and they had to scratch. Everyone at By Chance was hoping they got home in good order without too much stress on the horses. Even with the less than ideal weather, everyone enjoyed the show. We’d like to thank our judge, Ingrid Gentry, for a fantastic day of excellent judging We’d also like to thank our volunteers, without them, we could not have put on the show! Thanks to Lynn Paxton, Andy Amato, Ken Ashman, Jeanne Ashman, Barb Cornwell, Karen Brown, Charlene Cherry, Cheryl Grossman, Doug Anderson and Cynthia Taylor. Thanks again to all. Michele Wellman, Show Manager

PVDA Schooling Show Windsor Stables, Linthicum, Md. • May 15, 2010

It was a perfect day for horse showing. With not a cloud in the sky, nearly 30 riders converged on the picturesque Windsor Stables in Linthicum Heights, Maryland. Rain earlier in the week had threatened to make the show day a bit soggy, and severe storms with hail in some areas made me a little nervous about what Mother Nature had in store for us on Saturday. But the day was perfect, and with only a few scratches, the show had proven itself to be quite large. Thanks to some excel- lent volunteers, a wonderful judge and beautiful facilities, the show was a success. The high score of the day was earned by Lillian Watkins of Reddemeade Farm riding Chaka Zulu with a 73.5%, followed closely by barn mate Torie Broer riding Smart Alex with a score of 71.0%. Everyone rode very well, and the judge was only treated to a few shows of what she referred to as, “airs above the ground.”. I would like to thank my wonderful co-manager, Deb Lambert, for all of her help and experience and also for stepping up to the manager’s plate while I was competing in the ring. A huge thank you to Jill Windsor for allowing PVDA the use of her farm without which there would have been no show. And to Ms. Ingrid Gentry, our judge, I offer my thanks for your helpful commentary and fair and equal judging. Finally, to all of my volunteers—Blair Jackson, Shirley Bartlett, Kelly Pennington, Melanie Snyder, and Rachael Swackhammer: THANK YOU! Without everyone pitching in, the show would not have run as smoothly as it did. I hope I have as great a team for the next show in July! Samantha Bartlett, Show Manager
