3/26/2014 Joseph Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Joseph Smith From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader who founded the Latter Joseph Smith Day Saint movement, the predominant branch of which is Mormonism. At age twenty-four, Smith published the Book of Mormon, and by the time of his death fourteen years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers, established cities and temples, and founded a religion and a religious culture that continues to the present day. Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont, and by 1817 had moved with his family to western New York, then the site of intense religious revivalism as part of the Second Great Awakening. There, according to Smith, he saw and heard a series of visions beginning in the early 1820s; in the first of these visions "two personages" (implied to be God the Father and the Son) appeared to him, and in subsequent visions an angel directed Smith to a buried book of golden plates inscribed with a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civilization. In 1830, Smith published what he said was an English translation of these plates, titled the Book of 1st President of the Church of Christ (later the Mormon. Also in 1830, he organized the Church of Christ, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints)[1] calling it a restoration of the early Christian church. Church members were later called "Latter Day Saints", or April 6, 1830 – June 27, 1844 "Mormons". Mays The year 2007 marked the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Wil- ford Woodruff, fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Born March 1, 1807, Woodruff is referred to by biographer Thomas G. Alexander as “arguably, the third most important figure in all of LDS church history.”1 Whatever rank one may subscribe to him, Wilford Woodruff’s con- tributions to the Church are virtually incalculable—his journals number in the thousands of pages, his missionary travels (estimated to be more than 172,000 miles2), his leadership in completing and dedicating the Salt Lake Temple, his formal renouncing plural marriage and issuing the Manifesto, and his over- all unwavering faith in the Restoration. Recognizing his significant contribu- tions, the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation and the BYU Religious Studies Center considered it appropriate to honor Wilford Woodruff during 2007 by sponsoring two symposia about his life. BYU Symposium and the Junius F. Wells Award Dinner The first conference was held October 12, 2007, at the Conference Cen- ter on the campus of Brigham Young University. Weber: A Forensic Study of the Remains of Hyrum and Joseph Smith 1 Skulls and Crossed Bones?: A Forensic Study of the Remains of Hyrum and Joseph Smith Curtis G. Weber For more than eighty years the gravesite of Joseph Smith Jr., his wife Emma, and Hyrum Smith has drawn devoted and curious visitors alike to a small cemetery plot located in the Smith Family Cemetery in Nauvoo, Illi- nois. Today, their graves are marked by a large, sloping granite slab erected in their memory in 1991 by the Joseph and Hyrum Smith Family Foundation, the third such marker placed over the graves since 1928.1 Before that date, visitors to this cemetery would not have found grave markers for the martyred broth- ers, and indeed few would have known that their graves were located there. Following the June 29, 1844, public viewing, the bodies of the two men were secreted in a room of the Mansion House while sandbag-filled coffins were used for the public burial. Under the cover of darkness later that night, a small group of men carried coffins containing the actual bodies and buried them across the street in the basement of the unfinished Nauvoo House.2 With work on the Nauvoo House at a standstill when the brothers were killed, the secret burial site remained undiscovered, unknown except to family members and the select few who assisted with the nighttime burial. But the bodies did not long remain at this initial site. Only months later, in the fall of 1844, Emma had the bodies removed from the Church-owned Nauvoo House and reinterred on Smith-owned land.

The Tomb of Joseph
The Tomb of Joseph Susan Easton Black The writings of Richard Lloyd Anderson are an indispensable resource for scholars of church history. Although he will be remembered for authoring Understanding Paul (1983) and Joseph Smith’s New England Heritage (1971), my personal favorite is Investigating the Book of Mormon Witnesses (1981). In this Latter-day Saint classic Anderson leans on his Harvard Law School background (1954) to interrogate the Three Witnesses as if he were a prosecuting attorney and their testimony were in question. He is a master sleuth in ferreting out the truth from alleged statements made by Cowdery, Whitmer, and Harris. As he cross-examines supporting documents “to get the whole story” he reminds the reader of the “courtroom oath: not only ‘tell the truth,’ but ‘the whole truth.'”1 With dogged determination he examines “original manuscripts and then follow[s] [the Witnesses’] careers in civil records and newspapers of each county where they lived.”2 It is not until he exhausts his sources and completes his interrogation that he concludes, “After years of working with their lives and their words, I am deeply convinced that their printed testimonies must be taken at face value.”3 For the past twenty years Richard Lloyd Anderson has been my colleague, neighbor, and friend. Our association leads me to conclude that his interest in ascertaining the truth has not abated. I present this article of discovery as my gift. In courtroom style the gift unfolds one layer at a time, beginning with the procession of the martyrs’ remains into the city of Nauvoo on 28 June 1844 and the “mock burial” one day later.

I have got twenty five dollars that no one has any right to but myself. I feel anxious to apply that money on that graveyard, after I have done that . I think I can ask our Smith relatives to help mark Fathers and Mothers graves if no more.1 Emma Smith Bidamon expressed her desire to mark the graves of her in- laws, Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith, in an 1867 letter to her son, Joseph Smith III. One hundred thirty-five years later, her wish was fulfilled. The placement of monuments in the spring of 2002 by the Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith Family Foundation is the latest chapter in the com- plex history of a small parcel of land on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Situated on the south side of the Nauvoo peninsula, the area was first used as a burying ground by prehistoric peoples who populated the valley and who constructed a burial pit near the riverbank.2 It has been commonly believed that the Smith Family Cemetery had its beginnings with the inter- ment of Joseph Smith Sr.
