The room where he was born has been preserved as it is, and has a stark look. A part of the house has now been converted into a museum and called the Kirti Mandir. Open from 9am to 12pm and again from 3pm to 6pm. Porbandar is connected by rail with Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Rajkot while by road it is connected to major cities of the state. RAJKOT - Kaba gandhi no delo It was here that Gandhi spend his childhood as his father was appointed as the Diwan of the Rajkot state. The family residence, now known as ‘Kaba Gandhi No Delo’, now hosts a small museum offering a look into various events in Gandhi’s life through pictures. Gandhi returned to Rajkot in 1939 to establish the Rashtriyashala to instil the tenets of Swaraj (self-rule) in the minds of the people as a key step towards the country’s fight for Independence. Today, the school imparts educational and vocational training. Interestingly, it was this Rashtriyashala that encouraged local weavers to master the art of single ‘ikat’ weaving that is now a popular buy in Rajkot. Also located in An important railway junction on the Western Railway, Rajkot is also connected by air with Mumbai. BHAVNAGAR - Gandhi smruti Museum built in 1955 exhibiting Gandhi memorabilia & photos plus local archeological remains. The memorial built in remembrance to the Father of Nation commences varied activities. The ground floor housing the Barton museum is a repertoire of archeological remains from the surrounding regions. The Gandhi museum on the first floor takes one on a dramatic journey through the life of the Mahatma. AHMADABAD - Gandhi ashram A must-visit on any trip to Ahmedabad is the Gandhi Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Home to Gandhi from 1917 and 1930, it was one of the key places from where the struggle for Indian Independence took shape. It was from here in March 12, 1930, that Gandhi launched the Dandi March to protest against the British Salt Law in India. The cottage where Gandhi lived, Hriday Kunj, tops the list of attractions within the complex. The Charles Correa-designed museum contains three galleries–the Gandhi in Ahmedabad Gallery, the Painting Gallery and the My Life is My Message Gallery–and houses the Ashram’s library. The Museum is open daily from 8.30am to 6.30pm. There’s no admission fee. But no one will tell me anything!" he complained gruffly, to himself. Dhani was a nine-year-old boy. He lived with his family in a special place called Sabarmati Ashram. Sabarmati Ashram was made by a very great man called Mahatma Gandhi. The Ashram was a peaceful place on the banks of the River Sabarmati. People here lived and worked together in simple- looking cottages and on the fields around. Dhani loved playing under the Neem trees with his special friends, the birds and squirrels. Everyone had some work to do at the Ashram. They spun their own cloth thread on special wooden wheels called charkhas. They wove this thread into khadi cloth and sewed their own clothes.     Marching to Freedom Author: Subhadra Sen Gupta Illustrator: Tapas Guha Dhani knew something exciting was being planned at the ashram, but no one would tell him anything. “Just because I’m nine years old,” thought Dhani glumly. “I’m sure they think I’m stupid. I am not!” Dhani and his parents lived in a very special place. It was Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad where people from all over India came to stay. Like Gandhiji, they were all fighting for India’s freedom. During their stay at the ashram, they spent their time spinning khadi thread on charkhas, singing bhajans and listening to Gandhiji’s lectures. At Sabarmati, everyone had to work – cook and clean, wash clothes, fetch water from the well, milk the cows and goats, and grow vegetables. Even Dhani had a job – he had to take care of Binni, one of the ashram’s goats. He quite enjoyed that because Binni was his best friend and he liked talking to her. 2 3 That morning, as Dhani fed Binni with fresh grass and changed the water in her bowl, he said, “Something’s up, Binni! They all sit and talk in Gandhiji’s room. They are planning something. I know it!” Binni chewed and nodded as if she understood. Dhani felt hungry. He headed towards the kitchen, with Binni skipping along beside him. His mother was fanning the chulha, filling up the room with smoke. “Amma, is Gandhiji going somewhere?” he asked. His mother coughed in the smoke and said, “They are going on a march.” “March? Where are they going?” Dhani queried.

    MR. JUGATRAM DAVE Recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Constructive Work-1978 Born: 1895 Jugatram Dave was born on 1st September, 1895 at Laktar (Kathiawar). He studied upto Matric at Bombay and worked in a Gujarati monthly Vismi Sadi for some time. As the Bombay climate did not suit him, Swami Anand sent him to Baroda in 1915, where he worked as a teacher in a village school under the guidance of Acharya Kakasaheb Kalelkar for a couple of years. In 1917 he went to Ahmedabad to join the Kochrab Ashram and later shifted to the Sabarmati Ashram. He became an ideal ashramite, earning the confidence of Gandhiji and Kasturba. He worked first as a teacher in the national school established by Gandhiji and later joined the Navjivan Press. Jugatrambhai was deeply impressed by Gandhiji’s Constructive Programme and wished to take it up in right earnest on his own. This he could do only in 1924, when he went to stay at the Swaraj Ashram, Bardoli. He took an active part in flood relief operations in 1927 when many parts of Gujarat were devastated by floods and later in the Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928 under the leadership of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel. Soon afterwards he set up an ashram at Vedchhi, in the Raniparaj area inhabited mostly by Adivasis, as he felt that constructive work was most needed in uplifting the people of this socially and economically backward area. Jugatrambhai was, however, not able to give his undivided attention to organize and develop the Ashram activities on a wide and systematic scale till many years later.

The original chapters were all written by me from memory. They were written partly in the Yeravda jail and partly outside after my premature release. As the translator knew of this fact, he made a diligent study of the file of Indian Opinion and wherever he discovered slips of memory, he has not hesitated to make the necessary corrections. The reader will share my pleasure that in no relevant or material paricular has there been any slip. I need hardly mention that those who are following the weekly chapters of My Experiments with Truth cannot afford to miss these chapters on satyagraha, if they would follow in all its detail the working out of the search after Truth. GANDHI SABARMATI 26th April, 19282 1 Gandhiji started writing in Gujarati the historty of Satyagraha in South Africa on November 26, 1923, when he was in the Yeravda Central Jail; vide “Jail Diary, 1923.” By the time he was released, on February 5, 1924, he had completed 30 chapters. The chapters of Dakshina Africana Satyagrahano Itihas, as it was entitled, appeared serially in the issues of the Navajivan, beginning on April 13, 1924, and ending on November 22, 1925. The preface to the first part was written at Juhu, Bombay, on April 2, 1924; that to the second appeared in Navajivan, 5-7-1925.

    Drive against Bribe using RTI Act The Drive against Bribe using the Right to Information Act , organized by Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel at the Satyagrah Kochrab Ashram as part of a nation-wide campaign, comes to an end tomorrow, on July 15, 2006. This statement gives a synopsis of what has transpired so far and what is planned for the future. The Campaign That the campaign has been an unqualified success is shown by the following quantitative indicators 1. Number of visitors at the campaign site, Kochrab Ashram over 1400 2. Number of phone calls received 1275 calls 3. Number of applications under RTI filed 1366 The quantitative indicators tell only a limited story. The real impact has been through creation of awareness about the RTI Act amongst people at large ; empowerment and creation of confidence in common citizens that they can ask for information, and ask questions, from government functionaries; transformation of some of the citizens into active propagators of the RTI Act and its uses; and creation of a core of volunteers knowledgeable about the provisions, uses, intricacies of the RTI Act . As many as 300 volunteers have actively worked at the RTI camp at Kochrab Ashram during this fortnight. These volunteers have actually understood the RTI Act quite comprehensively and have also gained valuable experience in drafting applications under the RTI Act for a variety of problems and issues. Since the volunteers came from different parts of the state, their fanning out across the state and continuing to work for effective implementation of the RTI Act is likely to go a long way in a common people of the state using the RTI Act to solve their day to day problems instead of having to pay bribes.
