Irma René Koen AN ARTIST REDISCOVERED

September 30-December 31, 2017 Director’s Corner People often ask how we develop the Figge’s ever-changing exhibition schedule. There is no simple answer! Some traveling exhibitions are booked many years in advance, while others become available on short notice. Our homegrown exhibitions often are created to show off new additions to the collection or to take advantage of opportunities to celebrate regional artists and collections. With luck—and the hard work and skill of our curatorial staff—we present exhibitions for each season that complement each other. If there is a theme for our fall exhibitions, it is “travel”—not just an individual’s VIEWS FROM THE FIGGE travel to other places and cultures, but the movement of people and cultures across continents. Edouard Duval-Carrié, one of the foremost Haitian artists working today, makes paintings and sculptures that translate Haitian culture into modern terms. His multi-part altarpiece, Endless Flight, created at the time of increased migration of Haitians to the United States, casts central Voudou deities, or lwa, as modern figures: a superhero, a stripper and a GI. The central wall of the altarpiece, whose form echoes that of a Catholic church, is accompanied by seven freestanding or floating assemblages referring both to the migration of colonists and slaves to Haiti and to the migration of Haitians to the United States and other countries, fleeing the political oppression and poverty of their homeland. Endless Flight was acquired by the Figge with the generous assistance of multiple donors. Its installation in the fourth-floor gallery will include a selection of recent paintings by Duval-Carrié that continue his dialogue on the history of colonialism in the Americas. Born in Haiti, Duval-Carrié moved to Puerto Rico as a child, when his parents fled the Duvalier regime. He studied at Loyola College in Montréal and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, and now lives and works in Miami. His first exhibition was held at the Centre d’Art in Port au Prince, which helped launch the careers of some of Haiti’s most renowned painters and sculptors. In the words of the collector, “Colonial society could be considered the first global society, with influences flowing in a reciprocal manner between Europe and South America, communicating the cultural news from Africa and Asia, as well as transporting artisans from one port to another who brought with them skills and traditions from home…the result could be seen in, for example, a chair that combined Renaissance-inspired gargoyles carved in the manner of Mexican Tlaxcala masks….” The exhibition also highlights the ways in which people practiced their religion at home and in public, with tiny paintings of patron saints contrasted with painted altarpieces and ecclesiastical furniture. The exhibition is drawn from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and is co-organized by the Museum of Biblical Art, New York, and Art Services International, Alexandria, Virginia.

New Photography in the Lewis Gallery NOVEMBER 11, 2017-FEBRUARY 4, 2018 In the past decade, the Figge Art Museum has experienced significant growth in its collection of fine art photography. Through important gifts of exceptional works from, among others, the collector and fine art dealer Brent Sikkema, to strategic purchases of important works from the 19th and 20th century, the Figge’s collection of fine art photography now represents many of the key trends in photographic history. New Photography will feature a selection of recently acquired works that span nearly 150 years of the photographic medium. Works by internationally recognized photographers, such as Des Moines-born Gertrude Käsebier, 1852-1934; William Henry Jackson, 1843-1942; Minor White, 1908-1976; Emmet Gowin, b. 1941; and Ann Hamilton, b. 1956, provide a brief survey of photographic history from the classic landscape photographs of the mid-19th century to the conceptually focused works from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. www.figgeartmuseum.org 5 L E B R A T I N C E G j Day of the Dead SEPTEMBER 23-DECEMBER 17 Companion Events Community Gallery Delve into the history, myth and magic SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29 of this Mexican national holiday that is Noon-5 p.m. Day of the Dead Family Fiesta celebrated in many countries, including the Experience performances by Ballet STUDIO1 GALLERY United States.
