The Anthaxia (Haplanthaxia) mashuna Obenberger, 1931 species-group is de¿ ned, revised, keyed, and important diagnostic characters are illustrated. Additionally, four new species are described: Anthaxia (Haplanthaxia) convexi- ptera sp. nov. (Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe), A. (H.) jendeki sp. nov. (Kenya), A. (H.) nigroaenea sp. nov. (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), and A. (H.) puchneri sp. nov. (Angola). The lectotype of Anthaxia (H.) mashuna Obenberger, 1931 is designated. New country records and new host plants are given for Anthaxia (H.) ennediana Descarpentries & Mateu, 1965, A. (H.) mashuna, and A. (H.) patrizii Théry, 1938. Key words. Coleoptera, Buprestidae, Anthaxiini, new species-group, new species, lectotype designation, taxonomy, Afrotropical Region, Palaearctic Region Introduction The Sahelian fauna of the genus Anthaxia was rather poorly known and only a few spe- cies of the Sahelian distribution were recorded in the Obenbergerތs Catalogue (OBENBERGER 1930). The number of species signi¿ cantly increased when DESCARPENTRIES & BRUNEAU DE MIRÉ (1963) and DESCARPENTRIES & MATEU (1965) published the results of the French expe- ditions to Tibesti and Ennedi, respectively.

  • Relict Tropical Fish Fauna in Central Sahara
39 Iclitliyol. Explor. Freshwaters, Vol. 1, No. 1, pp. 39-48,2 figs., 1 tab., January 1990 O 1990 by Verlag Dr. Friedrich Pfeil, München, FRG - ISSN 0936-9902 Relict tropical fish fauna in Central Sahara Christian Lévêque * Following a taxonomic revision of freshwater fishes recorded from the Sahara, an updated species list is given. It appears that most species collected in small water bodies are relict populations of widespread species occuring in surrounding river basins, except for Barbus apleurogramina which might be a relict of a more ancient fish fauna. Distribution patterns are discussed in view of the supposed extent of river catchments during the Holocene. Introduction taxonomic revisions, it turned out that confusion existed in the identificationof some species, often Since the begining of this century, numerous based on small specimens, sometimes poorly Saharan expeditions were able to collect several preserved. The aim of this paper is to give an fish species in the widely scattered and isolated updated taxonomic review of the relict fish small patches of water in this area (Daget, 1959a, populations in the Sahara, and to discuss their 1968; Dumont, 1979, 1987; Estève.

Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.The Chad Sahara is a magical land of emptiness, where man is insignificant and nature rules the rhythms of life. Timeless features of the Chad Sahara include limitless expanses of golden sand dunes, multi-coloured outcrops, spellbinding canyons, wind-eroded turrets, breathtaking arches and palm-filled oases, along with picturesque villages and prehistoric rock art. The colourful people of Chad have a unique culture craed over centuries of isolation. Camel caravans still ply their products to lonely trade posts, while hardy herding communities eke out a basic existence, moving between temporarily fertile places. There are many surprises in this lost horizon, with towering mountain vistas and high windswept plateaux of red sandstone. Canyons and defiles have been etched by the elements over aeons into colossal blocks of inspirational designs. The peaks of the Tibesti in Chad are a strange mix; some are jagged and wild, like Tarso Tieroko and Pic Tousside.
