  • "Bringin' the Dunkey Down from the Carn:” Cornu-English in Context
“Bringin’ the Dunkey Down from the Carn:” Cornu-English in Context 1549-2005 – A Provisional Analysis Alan M. Kent (Open University, United Kingdom) 1. Introduction They do tell ’ow Jan ’ad a lil dunkey an kept’n spragged out up Carnmenellis; everybody knawed there was only furze an browse up there, so somebody said to Jan, “Ere. Jan. ’Ow ee come kaype yer dunkey up Carnmenellis? There edn much for’n aate up there, you.” “No,” said Jan. “Edn much for’n aate you – but ee got some ’ansome view!” (Tan- gye 1995: 19f.) In the three previous volumes of The Celtic Englishes, there has been com- paratively little discussion of Cornu-English. Aside from some perceptive re- marks from Payton, in a chapter mainly devoted to the ideology of the Cornish Language Revival (1997: 100-122), no new significant scholarship has emerged. My purpose in this chapter is to offer provisional corrective – metaphorically, bringing Jan’s dunkey down from the Carn – and offer a reassessment of the state of Cornu-English speech and writing within a historical context from 1549 – roughly the period that the English language began to rapidly replace Cornish in the territory of Cornwall, through its subsequent development as the primary linguistic group, to an examination of its current status. I write as an observer and commentator, but also a practitioner of Cornu-English writing. The section quoted at the start of this chapter is from a typical Cornu-English story titled “The Wrasslin’ Match” by Michael Tangye, a prize-winning story in the Dialect Prose competition from the 1994 Cornish Gorseth,1 yet we note that narratives such as this, are for the most part, relatively unchanged from their nineteenth-century counterparts.

  • St Eval May 2014
St Eval Neighbourhood Development Plan – Consultation Statement 1 - Introduction This Consultation Statement has been prepared to fulfil the legal obligations of the Neighbourhood Planning Regulations 2012 (set out in Section 3) relating to the St Eval Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP). Extensive community engagement and consultation work has been undertaken and this is summarised in Section 4. 2 - Background The rural, coastal Parish of St Eval is situated in North Cornwall, adjacent to Mawgan in Pydar, St Ervan and St Merryn in the Community Network Area of Wadebridge and Padstow. The Parish has a population of 804 1. The largest settlement in the Parish is Trevisker St Eval, located between the larger settlements of Newquay and Padstow. Padstow is approximately 4 miles northeast of the site and Newquay approximately 8 miles to the south west. The original motivation for a Neighbourhood Plan came about because of the MoD’s intention to sell some of their land at Trevisker St Eval. The Parish Council and St Eval Area Community Action Forum (SEACAF CIC) saw this as an opportunity to be proactive in shaping future development, as well as a way to help safeguard and enhance the area. With the relocation of the post office/shop and community centre on to the area being marketed for sale, the parish were keen to ensure that these facilities were protected for existing and future residents of the parish. With the MoD Development Brief defining a potential for development of up to 100 houses, the need for facilities was seen as ever more key to the future of the parish.

Study 4978 Cornwall OnLine Census Project, 1891 This document was supplied by the depositor and has been modified by AHDS History Introduction THIS STUDY contains our [Cornwall Online Census Project] transcript of the 1891 census returns for Cornwall. It has been transcribed, checked and validated by the volunteers of the Cornwall Online Census Project, the Cornish arm of the Free Census project. The original records are held by The National Archives and this transcription is done with their permission. Image copies of the original returns can be viewed on film, fiche or CDROM from commercial suppliers and at many research facilities around the world. This study contains a full transcription of the 1891 census returns for Cornwall—a snapshot of the people and places of Cornwall on the night of April 5th, 1891. The file names are the PRO piece number code (without punctuation). About UK Census Returns About Free Census (FreeCEN) was started early in 2000 with a pilot project for the 1891 census returns for Devon. The aim of Free Census is to transcribe all the UK 19th century census returns. It is part of FreeUKGEN and is a sister project to FreeBMD and FreeREG. The intention is that all three of the UK primary sources for the family historian will be online and “free to view.” Six months after the Devon project started, the Cornwall 1891 commenced. Most English and Welsh counties are now covered for the 1891, with the Scottish projects concentrating on the 1841. There are several English 1861 projects, using commercially produced discs and two English 1841 projects, including Cornwall.
