The aim of the study is to provide a monograph of the Pliocene carpological flora at the Kholmech site in south-eastern Belarus. Fossil material was collected from an excavation located on the right bank of the Dnieper river. Very abundant macrofossils, several tens of thousands of specimens, comprising mainly seeds, fruits and megaspores, were collected from peaty gyttja deposits. The specimens represent 170 taxa contained in 82 genera and 46 families of cryptogamic and angiospermous plants. Most (137 taxa) were identified to species level. Gymnospermous plants were represented by only one fragment of a Picea needle. Six species new for the Pliocene in Europe, from the genera Ceratophyllum, Cyperus, Lycopus, Schoenoplectus, and one new combination in the genus Teucrium are described here. All the taxa are described and illustrated, some of them using the SEM. On the basis of the taxonomic composition of the Kholmech fossil flora, its age has been established as the beginning of the Late Pliocene. Floras of this type are known at several other localities in south-western and western Belarus. The flora of the Kinelian series in the Middle Volga basin, the Simbugino flora in Bashkiria, the Dan’shino flora in central Russia, all in the east, and the floras of Kłodzko, the Vildštein Formation and Rippersroda in the west are of the same age as that from Kholmech. Comparison of the floristic compositions of the Kholmech and Mizerna floras in southern Poland reveals that the true counterpart of the Kholmech flora is complex II/III of the Mizerna flora and not Mizerna complex II as had previously been thought. Description General: Rush Family (Cyperaceae). Creeping spikerush is a perennial, heavily rhizomatous wetland plant that is found from low to mid elevations. It has a dense root mass that extends deeper that 40 cm (16 in) in the soil profile. The stems are singular or in small clusters and it will continue to grow to keep the heads out of the water if the water rises slowly. The stems are upright, round, and may reach 1.2 m (4 ft) in height (height is dependent on the depth of water in the growing environment). The leaves are reduced to sheaths clustered at the base of the stems. The flowers are borne in a terminal spikelet, 1 flower per scale with 2 stigmas. Plants typically flower from June through September. The seeds are yellow to brown lenticular achenes, 1.5-2.5 mm (0.06-0.1 in) long including tubercle, and subtended by up to 8 bristles (Welsh et al., 2003).

Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite.

As it has been our habit in the past, our outgoing chairman, Pierre Bultynck, has continued his duties until the end of the calendar year, and in the name of all the Subcommission, I like to express our warmest thanks to him for all his efforts, his enthusi- asm for our tasks, his patience with the often too slow progress of research, and for the humorous, well organized and skil- ful handling of our affairs, including our annual meetings. At the same time I like to thank all our outgoing Titular Members for their partly long-time service and I express my hope that they will continue their SDS work with the same interest and energy as Corresponding Members. The new ICS rules require a rather constant change of voting members and the change from TM to CM status should not necessarily be taken as an excuse to adopt the lifestyle of a “Devonian pensioner”. I see no reason why constantly active SDS members shouldn´t become TM again, at a later stage. On the other side, the rather strong exchange of voting members should bring in some fresh ideas and some shift towards modern stratigraphical tech- niques.

Torr., is an obligate wetland graminoid species (Reed 1988). Beaked spikerush is widespread in the Americas from across southern Canada to northern Mexico, to the West Indies, the Caribbean, and the Andes of South America (Cronquist et al. 1994; Hitchcock et al. 1994). The species is secure throughout its range with a G5 ranking, but infrequent across most of the U.S., with Region 2 state rankings ranging from S1, critically imperiled; to S2, imperiled; to SR, reported (NatureServe 2001). Beaked spikerush is a “species of special concern” with the South Dakota Natural Heritage Program (Ode pers. comm. 2001). The only currently known population of beaked spikerush in South Dakota is in Fall River County, along Cascade Creek, an area where several other rare plant species occur. The beaked spikerush population is present on lands administered by Black Hills National Forest (BHNF), and on surrounding private lands, including the Whitney Preserve owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

Limnochloa; horsetail spikerush, jointed spikesedge) is a perennial spikerush found in marshes, lakes, ponds, ditches, and streams (ITIS 2017; Smith et al. 2002). While the majority of the known populations are from coastal regions of the southeastern USA, E. equisetoides has also been reported as far north as Ontario (Kartesz 2014; USDA, NRCS 2017). In the USA its distribution includes Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin (Kartesz 2014; USDA, NRCS 2017). It is listed as critically imperiled, imperiled, or vulnerable in all but five of these states (Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas), and is known only historically from three (Arkansas, Massachusetts , and Missouri; NatureServe 2012). The taxon is presumed extirpated from Illinois (NatureServe 2012). The Oklahoma collection of Eleocharis equisetoides (figures 1 and 2) was found at the margin of a small lake in Pushmataha County in southeastern Oklahoma.

Заўвагі на перыферыі транслітарацыі „Летапісца Літвы і Xронікі Pускай” Abstract Ignacy Daniłowicz, the 19th century scholar from Podlasie, a professor at the Vilnius University, then, successively,UMCS at the Kharkiv University, the Kiev University, and the Moscow University, left behind a rich and valuable scholarly legacy. A lawyer and historian by education, he also showed considerable linguistic and palaeographic skills and was fascinated with the language of Rus’ documents pertaining to the history of Lithuania. His work with said iles was undoubtedly facilitated by his knowledge of the dialect of Podlasie. The text focuses mainly on the methods of transposing the Supraśl letopis, written at the beginning of the 16th century in the Cyrillic script, into the Latin alphabet. The analysis of the solution used by Daniłowicz in terms of the transliteration of vowels and consonants reveals a good command of the palaeographer’s toolkit in spite of the lack of linguistic training.

Word count: 79, 991 words Alexandra Vukovic Abstract The Ritualisation of Political Power in Early Rus’ (10th-12th centuries) Alexandra Vukovic This dissertation examines the ceremonies and rituals involving the princes of early Rus’ and their entourage, how these ceremonies and rituals are represented in the literature and artefacts of early Rus’, the possible cultural influences on ceremony and ritual in this emergent society, and the role of ceremony and ritual as representative of political structures and in shaping the political culture of the principalities of early Rus’. The process begins by introducing key concepts and historiographic considerations for the study of ceremony and ritual and their application to the medieval world. The textological survey that follows focusses on the chronicles of Rus’, due to their compilatory nature, and discusses the philological, linguistic, and contextual factors governing the use of chronicles in this study. This examination of the ceremonies and rituals of early Rus’, the first comprehensive study of its kind for this region in the early period, engages with other studies of ceremony and ritual for the medieval period to inform our understanding of the political culture of early Rus’ and its influences.
