DNI Blair Addresses the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia
Remarks by the Director of National Intelligence Mr. Dennis C. Blair World Affairs Council of Philadelphia Philadelphia, Pennsylvania November 6, 2009 AS PREPARED FOR DELIVERY Some of you may have heard of the new book just out, the sequel to Freakonomics. It’s called Superfreakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance. One chapter talks about mathematicians working with the Intelligence Community, and coming up with algorithms to sift through databases and find terrorists. While I can’t confirm or deny that’s happening, I note that if you search the word “Algorithm,” you can almost find the words: “Al Gore.” It’s an honor to follow the former Vice President. Thank you all for sticking around after the main event. And thank you very much for that kind introduction, Tony. It truly is a pleasure to be here at this important conference. My compliments to all involved. Your presence and participation show you really want to get the job done for the country. It shows that you want to come up with real solutions to critical security issues facing our world. And maybe it shows that you hoped there was going to be a big party here for the end of the World Series. I certainly did. So close. But it’s always nice to be in Philadelphia, home of Rocky Balboa and the Phillies. It seems that Philly II just did not have as happy an ending as Philly I. I’ll wait for Philly III to come out next year. Baseball can be a very tough sport. -

Describing Baseball Pitch Movement with Right-Hand Rules

Box 190 Yachats, OR 97498, USA Received 21 July 2005; received in revised form 30 May 2006; accepted 5 June 2006 Abstract The right-hand rules show the direction of the spin-induced deflection of baseball pitches: thus, they explain the movement of the fastball, curveball, slider and screwball. The direction of deflection is described by a pair of right-hand rules commonly used in science and engineering. Our new model for the magnitude of the lateral spin-induced deflection of the ball considers the orientation of the axis of rotation of the ball relative to the direction in which the ball is moving. This paper also describes how models based on somatic metaphors might provide variability in a pitcher’s repertoire. ᭧ 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Testing the Minimax Theorem in the Field
Testing the Minimax Theorem in the Field: The Interaction between Pitcher and Batter in Baseball Christopher Rowe Advisor: Professor William Rogerson Abstract John von Neumann’s Minimax Theorem is a central result in game theory, but its practical applicability is questionable. While laboratory studies have often rejected its conclusions, recent field studies have achieved more favorable results. This thesis adds to the growing body of field studies by turning to the game of baseball. Two models are presented and developed, one based on pitch location and the other based on pitch type. Hypotheses are formed from assumptions on each model and then tested with data from Major League Baseball, yielding evidence in favor of the Minimax Theorem. Pitch-count and its Effects on Shoulder Injuries. How to keep a Pitcher Healthy Alexander Malek Alexander will graduate in June 2015 with an Honors Biology B.S. degree. Abstract Baseball is currently the fourth most popular sport in high schools across the country. However, pitchers are at a high risk to develop career ending injuries. Overuse can result in SLAP tears as well as torn rotator cuff muscles that can end a dream of pitching professionally. Major League Baseball has teamed up with leading sports medicine researchers to de- termine safe pitch-count guidelines for pitchers of all ages. Articles were found using Touro’s e-Journal database as well as Pubmed.gov to find pertinent research on this topic. Studies on ball velocity and scapular kinematics were done on three different levels of pitching. Data showed that over time fatigue sets in and pitching mechanisms change. It is important for pitchers to realize this and to act in a safe manner. Schools may determine who those pitchers and catchers may be, not setting a limit of 8 pitchers and 2 catchers. The week of conditioning should be a comprehensive program that involves the following components: Stretching – Proper stretching of the entire body, allowing for preparation of proper mechanics, is crucial. Flexibility and balance are important components of the program. Strengthening – A throwing program should be progressive and should begin to build a base that athletes will develop throughout the season. Cardio – Aerobic training designed to build full body endurance to prevent fatigue and overuse injuries is a key component. Recommendation include 20-40 minutes (biking, elliptical, treadmill) three times during the week. Recovery – Pitchers should be throwing no more than 3-4 times during the week and should be provided the proper amount of rest that allows the arm to recover. -

Dynamical Chaos in a Simple Model of a Knuckleball
Dynamical Chaos in a Simple Model of a Knuckleball Nicholas J. Nelson, Eric Strauss Department of Physics California State University, Chico 400 W. 1st St. Chico, CA 95929 Abstract The knuckleball is perhaps the most enigmatic pitch in baseball. Relying on the presence of raised seams on the surface of the ball to create asymmetric flow, a knuckleball's trajectory has proven very challenging to predict compared to other baseball pitches, such as fastballs or curveballs. Previous experimental tracking of large numbers of knuckleballs has shown that they can move in essentially any direction relative to what would be expected from a drag-only trajectory. This has led to speculation that knuckleballs exhibit chaotic motion. Here we develop a relatively simple model of a knuckleball that includes quadratic drag and lift from asymmetric flow which is taken from experimental measurements of slowly rotating baseballs. Our models can indeed exhibit dynamical chaos as long In contrast, models that omit torques on the ball in flight do not show chaotic behavior. Uncertainties in the phase space position of the knuckleball are shown to grow by factors as large as 106 over the flight of the ball from the pitcher to home plate. We quantify the impact of our model parameters on the chaos realized in our models, specifically showing that maximum Lyapunov exponent is roughly proportional to the square root of the effective lever arm of the torque, and also roughly proportional to the initial velocity of the pitch. We demonstrate the existence of bifurcations that can produce changes in the location of the ball when it reaches the plate of as much as 1.2 m for specific initial conditions similar to those used by professional knuckleball pitchers. -
Title Ix and Baseball: How the Contact Sports Exemption Denies Women Equal Opportunity to America’S Pastime
\\jciprod01\productn\N\NVJ\14-3\NVJ311.txt unknown Seq: 1 5-JUN-14 7:37 TITLE IX AND BASEBALL: HOW THE CONTACT SPORTS EXEMPTION DENIES WOMEN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO AMERICA’S PASTIME Brittany K. Puzey* INTRODUCTION Imagine yourself as a child. I know, I know, it seems a little silly and perhaps even oxymoronic to try to imagine simpler times while reading a legal article, but I implore you to do so. Each of us had something that we aspired to become, be it a racecar driver or a rock star, a ballerina or a ball-player. Do you remember what your aspiration was? For many kids, early dreams and aspira- tions planted the seed for a real career—a seed that gradually blossomed as those children learned what they liked and what they ultimately desired. That tiny seed of “make believe” helped them to decide how to achieve their particu- lar career choice. Would-be doctors began studying extra hard and taking advanced classes. Hopeful singers belted out tunes at the top of their lungs and enrolled in vocal lessons. Aspiring baseball players joined local teams, where they worked hard at practice—running sprints, catching flies, taking extra cuts, and lifting weights. Slowly, but surely, dreams began to morph into reality. In today’s society, laws of equal opportunity generally promote and encourage children of both genders to pursue whichever career choice they desire.1 Little girls who dream of becoming baseball players, however, do not have this opportunity. Instead, Title IX’s Contact Sports Exemption essentially denies women the chance to pursue baseball as a legitimate career, or even to play the sport at the collegiate level.
