The News-Sentinel 1950 Tuesday, January 3, 1950 Orpha Faye Shipley Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Moyer-Haupert funeral home in Akron for Mrs. Orpha Faye SHIPLEY, 61, of near Kewanna, who died in an automobile Saturday while enroute to Woodlawn hospital. The Rev. Daniel SLAYBAUGH officiated and burial was made in the Akron cemetery. Mrs. Shipley, a life-long resident of Fulton county, is survived by her husband, Vern SHIPLEY; two brothers, Fred and Jennings GRUBE, of Kewanna, and a half-sister, Mrs. Esther GREENWALD, South Gate, Calif. Lora M. Rupe Mrs. Lora M. RUPE, 78, of Argos, passed away Monday evening in the Parkview Hospital, Plymouth, following a four weeks illness from complications. Mrs. Rupe has been a resident of Argos and vicinity throughout her entire life. She was born Dec. 29, 1871 on a farm west of Argos. Her parents were William and Susan MILLER. In 1890 she was married to William Allen RUPE, who preceded her in death in 1930. Mrs. Rupe was a member of the Argos Church of God. Surviving are a brother, Charles S. MILLER, Battle Creek, Mich.; and three nephews, William T. MILLER, Walkerton, David C. MILLER, Brook, Ind. and Robert W. MILLER, Battle Creek. Funeral services in charge of the Rev. Alvin ROPP, Plymouth assisted by Rev. Mrs. Virginia PLETCHER, Plymouth will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at the Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Burial will be in the Maple [Grove] cemetery, Argos. The body is at the funeral home where friends may call. Jack LeRoy Hittle Funeral services for Jack LeRoy HITTLE, four-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John HITTLE, Richland township, were held at 10 a.m. today at the Foster funeral home. The Rev. Mrs. Edith BRUNER officiated and burial was made at Richland Center. The child died at 9 a.m. Monday in Woodlawn hospital. Etta Baker Mrs. Etta BAKER, 65, former resident of the Green Oak neighborhood, died at noon Sunday in Beloit, Wis., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Evelyn ZARTMAN. Death was due to a heart attack suffered about three weeks prior to her passing. She had been in ill health for several months, however. Etta [WALLACE], daughter of James and Barbara WALLACE was born in Wallace, Neb., on Dec. 6, 1884. Most of her life had been spent in the Argos and Green Oak communities. Twice married, both her first and second husbands, Wilbur PETTY and Jacob BAKER, preceded her in death. She was a member of the Macy Christian church. Surviving with the daughter are a son, Darwin PETTY, Hayward, Wis.; three grandchildren and six brothers, Albertus and Earl [WALLACE], South Bend; Frank, Gilbert and Glen [WALLACE], Plymouth, and Harry [WALLACE], Argos. The body was returned to the Ditmire funeral home at Fulton this afternoon. Final rites will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Macy Christian church by the Rev. J. Franklin ARTHUR of Tipton. Burial will be made in the Argos cemetery. The body will be taken to the church Wednesday at 12:30 to lie in state. Estella W. Working Mrs. [Estella] “Stella” W. WORKING, 65, widow of Peter WORKING, was found dead at her home in Kewanna Sunday afternoon. Death, according to Coroner Dr. Dean STINSON, was due to coronary embolism. Mrs. Working, who lived alone, had been dead for several hours when found by neighbors Sunday. She was [Estella W. PINGLEY] the daughter of Solomon and Lavina PINGLEY and was born in Carroll county Oct. 8, 1885. On August 23, 1908 she married Peter Working, who passed away in 1946. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Betty DORTON, of Fort Wayne; two sons, Lester D. [WORKING], of Niles, Mich.; Edward [WORKING], of Jackson, Mich.; eight grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Jessie GALE, of Anaconda, Mont.; Mrs. Effie HENDRICKSON, of Fargo, N.D.; Mrs. Clara KNARR, Logansport; one brother, Ira PINGLEY, of Logansport. The body is at the Harrison funeral home in Kewanna where friends may call. Funeral rites will be from the funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Henry BULGER in charge. Burial will be in the Kewanna I.O.O.F. cemetery. Wednesday, January 4, 1950 Sommers Infant A baby boy, born to Arnold and Barbara (RHINEHART) SOMMERS, Kewanna, died Tuesday evening at Woodlawn hospital shortly after birth. Survivors include the parents; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles RHINEHART, Rochester, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam SOMMERS, Grass Creek. Services were held at 3:15 p.m. today at the Harrison funeral home, Kewanna. The Rev. Thomas LUKE, Rochester, officiated and burial was made in the Grass Creek cemetery. Howard H. Hood Howard H. HOOD, 78, well-known citizen of this community, passed away 6 a.m. today at his farm home in the Mt. Zion neighborhood southeast of this city. He had been in failing health for the past four months. Mr. Hood, who always took an active interest in the civic and political affairs of the county, had a host of friends throughout Fulton and adjacent counties. He was born in 1871 at Edinburg, Indiana, the son of John and Rebecca HOOD. He had been a resident of Rochester and vicinity for over 46 years. In 1906 he was married to Minnie ZIMMERMAN in a ceremony solemnized at Niles, Michigan. In his earlier years he was a cigar manufacturer and later a farmer. Mr. Hood was a member of the Christian Church and the Rochester Masonic Order. Survivors are his wife, at home; three daughters, Mrs. J. B. ROYNON, Chicago; Mrs. Robert Van DUYNE and Mrs. C. R. OREN, both of Rochester; a sister, Mrs. Grand COTTLE, Edinburg; a grandson, Richard OREN, this city, and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held Friday 2 p.m. at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be in charge of Rev. Grant BLACKWOOD who will be assisted by the Rochester Masonic Order. Burial will be in the IOOF cemetery. The body will be at the funeral home where friends may call. Thursday, January 5, 1950 Earl Hardy Earl HARDY, 48, a resident of the North Shore, Lake Manitou, passed away 7:30 a.m. today at Woodlawn hospital. Death was attributed to pneumonia. He had been seriously ill for the last month. Mr. Hardy came here from Chicago several years ago to make his home with his mother, Mrs. Luther LATHROP. Mr. Hardy was born in Chicago, Jan. 30, 1902. He was a carpenter and a member of the Rochester Moose Lodge. He is survived by his mother, and his step-father, Luther LA THROP, owner of the Airport grocery, east of the city. His father, Alf HARDY and a brother, Fred HARDY preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. Stephen GUBI will officiate and burial will be in the Eden cemetery, Chicago. The body remains at the Foster Funeral Home. Howard Hood In the list of survivors of the late Howard HOOD, which appeared in Wednesday edition of The News-Sentinel, the name of a daughter, Miss Inez HOOD, of Indianapolis, was unintentionally omitted. W. E. Ackert W. E. ACKERT, 58, Kewanna furniture dealer, committed suicide Wednesday afternoon by placing a hose from the exhaust pipe of his car through a back window of the vehicle. The body was discovered by Leonard CHEMNESS who was hunting in a woods four miles east of Winamac. Chamness notified Mrs. Elmer PETERS, a near-by resident, who, in turn, called Pulaski county Sheriff Hubert BOLLHAUVE. Ackert, who was associated with Karl GAST, Inc., Akron, had been ill since last Thursday. He left home at 9 a.m. Wednesday with a statement that he would never return. He apparently drove north on Road 17, to 14, then west to a point four miles east of Winamac, down a gravel road a quarter of a mile and into a woods. He was found in the back seat of the car, reportedly with the hose in his mouth. The motor of the car had stopped running. A Kewanna resident for nearly 20 years, and a native of Toronto, Canada, he is survived by the wife, Anna Mae [ACKERT]; a son, Carson [ACKERT]; a daughter, Delores [ACKERT]; and one grandson. The body was first taken to a Winamac funeral home and later returned to the Harrison Funeral Home, Kewanna. Arrangements are pending. Elnora Masterson Mrs. Elnora MASTERSON, 78, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 428 1/2 Main Street. She had been in bad health two years and seriously ill one day. Born Nov. 2, 1871, at Macy, she lived here her entire life. The daughter of B. O. and Sarah JOHNSON, she was married in 1896 to James MASTERSON. She was a member of the Townsend club and the Baptist church. Survivors include the husband; a daughter, Mrs. Russell PONTIOUS, Akron; a son, Harold [MASTERSON], Rochester; one granddaughter and three grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry BAILEY will officiate and burial will be in the IOOF cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. Lydia Eckman Mrs. Lydia ECKMAN, 74, died at the county home at 7 a.m. today. She had been ill since Monday. A native of Illinois, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George S. STERCHI, moving to the Akron community 15 years ago. Survivors include five step-children, Mrs. Harry SHAFFER, Rochester; Mrs. Mabel GAGNON, Laketon; Fred ECKMAN, Urbana; Clarence [ECKMAN], Wabash and Josephine BRUN, Wabash; a brother, David WEISE, Milwaukee, and twelve grandchildren.
