Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1977 There is certainly no more controversial figure in American literature than Zora Neale Hurston. Even the most common details, easily ascertainable for most people, have been variously interpreted or have remained un resolved issues in her case: When was she born? Was her name spelled Neal, Neale, or Neil? Whom did she marry? How many times was she married? What happened to her after she wrote Seraph on the Suwanee? NARRATIVES OF SOUTHERN CONTACT ZONES: MOBILITY AND THE LITERARY IMAGINATION OF ZORA NEALE HURSTON AND MARJORIE KINNAN RAWLINGS A Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English The University of Mississippi by KYOKO SHOJI HEARN December 2013 Copyright Kyoko Shoji Hearn 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the literary works of the two Southern women writers, Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, based on the cultural contexts of the 1930s and the 1940s. It discusses how the two writers’ works are in dialogue with each other, and with the particular historical period in which the South had gone through many social, economical, and cultural changes. Hurston and Rawlings, who became friends with each other beyond their racial background in the segregated South, shared physical and social mobility and the interest in the Southern folk cultures. -

ABSTRACT Rereading Zora Neale Hurston Through the Lens of “What White Publishers Won’t Print” Christy Davis, M.A. Thesis Chairperson: Sarah K. Ford, Ph.D. During Zora Neale Hurston’s life, she wrote many controversial statements on race. Scholars continually suggest that Hurston was merely pandering to the white nation or tricking her audience. By using Hurston’s own explanation of “What White Publishers Won’t Print,” I examine the constraints and expectations put on Hurston’s writing. Hurston was expected to write stories about the exceptional Negroes who rise to success. While Hurston appears to write stories about the exceptional, the idea of the exceptional is undermined through her essay “The Pet Negro System.” Her characters are exceptional only because they are someone else’s pet. Thus, Hurston emphasizes the importance of relationship over race and exceptionality throughout Jonah’s Gourd Vine, Dust Tracks on a Road, and Seraph on the Suwannee. Through an examination of Hurston’s novels, stories, folklore, anthropology, memoir, essays, and journalism, we will learn about the main thematic and stylistic trends that define African American literature from the time of the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Arts Movement. We will also study selected fiction by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin to get a better view of Hurston’s literary and historical context, and to see where she echoes and where she departs from so-called “mainstream” or “canonical” African American literature of the time. Central concerns during the semester will be the status of folk culture, Hurston’s depiction of women and her status as a black woman writer, and how Hurston’s writing reflects the race and class politics of her time. Assignments include a midterm and final exam, an essay assignment, a creative final project, and weekly submission of email discussion questions. Books Required Robert Hemenway. Guide to African American Manuscripts In the Collection of the Virginia Historical Society A [Abner, C?], letter, 1859. 1 p. Mss2Ab722a1. Written at Charleston, S.C., to E. Kingsland, this letter of 18 November 1859 describes a visit to the slave pens in Richmond. The traveler had stopped there on the way to Charleston from Washington, D.C. He describes in particular the treatment of young African American girls at the slave pen. Accomack County, commissioner of revenue, personal property tax book, ca. 1840. 42 pp. Mss4AC2753a1. Contains a list of residents’ taxable property, including slaves by age groups, horses, cattle, clocks, watches, carriages, buggies, and gigs. Free African Americans are listed separately, and notes about age and occupation sometimes accompany the names. Adams family papers, 1698–1792. 222 items. Mss1Ad198a. Microfilm reels C001 and C321. Primarily the papers of Thomas Adams (1730–1788), merchant of Richmond, Va., and London, Eng. Section 15 contains a letter dated 14 January 1768 from John Mercer to his son James. The writer wanted to send several slaves to James but was delayed because of poor weather conditions. Adams family papers, 1792–1862. 41 items. Mss1Ad198b. Concerns Adams and related Withers family members of the Petersburg area. Section 4 includes an account dated 23 February 1860 of John Thomas, a free African American, with Ursila Ruffin for boarding and nursing services in 1859.
