More than a newsletter but not quite a journal, RACE-Link at best constitutes a quasi-journal. In this issue, we continue to plot the lines defining race in its contemporary configurations in the post 9/11 Canadian context. This issue begins with Sunera Thobani’s article ‘No Academic Exercise’ tracing the highly problematic notion of academic freedom. Thobani calls attention to the lack of such freedom in voicing dissent against the ongoing War on Muslim bodies. She underlines the tenuous position of women of colour in the academy whose grounded knowledge is neither validated nor their critique acknowledged. -

Julian Blake Gordon Spring 2014 MEDEA OF GAZA GORDON !1 GORDON !2 Research Summary A snapshot of Medea of Gaza as of March 7, 2014 ! Since the Summer of 2013, I’ve been working on a currently untitled play inspired by the Diane Arnson Svarlien translation of Euripides’ Medea. The origin of the idea was my Theater and Culture class with Nancy Hoffman, taken in the Spring of 2013. For our midterm, we were assigned to pick a play we had read and set it in a new location. It was the morning of my 21st birthday, a Friday, and the day I was heading home for Spring Break. My birthday falls on a Saturday this year, but tomorrow marks the anniversary, I’d say. I had to catch a train around 7:30am. The only midterm I hadn’t completed was the aforementioned Theater and Culture assignment. -

RE-MEDIATING THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT: THE USE OF FILMS TO FACILITATE DIALOGUE by ELANA SHEFRIN Under the Direction of M. Lane Bruner ABSTRACT With the objective of outlining a decision-making process for the selection, evaluation, and application of films for invigorating Palestinian-Israeli dialogue encounters, this project researches, collates, and weaves together the historico-political narratives of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, the artistic worldviews of the Israeli and Palestinian national cinemas, and the procedural designs of successful Track II dialogue interventions. Using a tailored version of Lucien Goldman’s method of homologic textual analysis, three Palestinian and three Israeli popular film texts are analyzed along the dimensions of Historico-Political Contextuality, Socio- Cultural Intertextuality, and Ethno-National Textuality. Then, applying the six “best practices” criteria gleaned from thriving dialogue programs, coupled with the six “cautionary tales” criteria gleaned from flawed dialogue models, three bi-national peacebuilding film texts are homologically analyzed and contrasted with the six popular film texts. -

März 2006 festgelegt, die des palästinensischen Parlaments findet am 25. Januar 2006 statt. Wie sehr jedoch die Zukunft Israels und Palästinas von der Bewältigung der Vergangenheit abhängt, macht der Themenabend deutlich. Die Israelin Yulie Cohen Gerstel und der Palästinenser Nizar Hassan schreiben in ihren Dokumentarfilmen eine sehr persönliche und in dieser Form noch nie gehörte Geschichte ihres Landes. Beide Filmemacher beziehen sich dabei sowohl auf politische Ereignisse als auch auf das sehr persönliche Schicksal ihrer Familien und berühren damit zahlreiche schmerzhafte Tabus. Beide sind im Staat Israel geboren, leben und arbeiten dort, Yulie in Tel Aviv, Nizar in Nazareth. Doch ihr Verhältnis zu diesem Staat könnte unterschiedlicher nicht sein. ZDF / © Nizar Hassan Niemals, so Filmemacher Nizar Hassan, werde er sich damit abfinden, dass der Staat Israel von Anfang an die palästinensische Identität verleugnet hat - und damit auch den Traum von einer palästinensischen Zukunft leugnet. Seine Kollegin Yulie Cohen Gerstel fühlt sich zerrissen zwischen der Loyalität zu ihrer israelischen Heimat und der Scham, die sie über die Politik ihres Landes gegenüber den Palästinensern empfindet. Dafür wirft man ihr in Israel Verrat vor. Yulie Cohen Gerstel fragt sich, wo ihr Platz ist in der gegenwärtigen israelischen Gesellschaft. Ihr Film "Mein Land Zion" und "Der Olivenhain - Karm Abu-Khalil" von Nizar Hassan eröffnen einen israelisch-palästinensischen Dialog, der deutlich macht, inwiefern die Geschichtsschreibung von falschen Prämissen ausgeht und wie wichtig der Dissens bei der Suche nach der historischen Wahrheit ist. -

Reframing Israel-Palestine: Critical Israeli Responses to the Palestinian Call for Just Peace Teodora Todorova, BA (Hons), MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2014 Abstract: This thesis examines how Israeli critical activist engagement with the Palestinian call for just peace reframes Israel-Palestine. The thesis makes a political-theoretical intervention by arguing that Israeli civil society engagement with the principles underlying just peace requires, if it is to be successful, the utilisation of non-statist conceptualisations of peace politics. The thesis draws upon feminist critical theory and postcolonial critique to theorise peace politics as a practice of solidarity. From this perspective the conflict is analysed through the prism of Nancy Fraser’s ‘all affected’ principle which asserts that all those whose lives and wellbeing are affected by an institution of power, whether that be a state or a transnational corporation, are subjects of justice in relation to that institution, whether they hold the same citizenship as its representatives or not. Thus, by virtue of sharing the same, albeit politically diffentiated, geo-political space Israelis and Palestinians residing in Israel within its 1948 borders, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as the refugees outside Israel-Palestine, are subjects of justice and potential solidarity. As such, the Palestinians have the right to demand justice not only from the state of Israel but also from its citizens. The activist work, narratives and responses of three critical Israeli case study groups are examined in relation to the call for just peace: Anarchists Against the Wall (AATW), the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), and Zochrot (Remembering). -

1 The Power of Forgiving Dvar Torah Yom Kippur 5776 Rabbi Claudia Kreiman - Temple Beth Zion “I forgive you,” Nadine Collier, the daughter of 70-year-old Ethel Lance, said at the hearing, her voice breaking with emotion. “You took something very precious from me. I will never talk to her again. I will never, ever hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul.” “We welcomed you Wednesday night in our Bible study with welcome arms,” said Felicia Sanders, her voice trembling. “Tywanza Sanders was my son. But Tywanza Sanders was my hero. Tywanza was my hero….May God have mercy on you.” The shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, happened only five days after I gave birth to my second daughter this summer. I was in baby land, enjoying the newest arrival to my family and feeling blessed (and sleep deprived). The news of the shooting broke my heart, and I looked at my baby and thought about the brokenness of the world she was born into, brokenness she doesn’t know about yet and that I am terrified of her discovering. “I forgive you”. Hearing those words from a daughter and a mother moved me to tears. Their capacity to forgive and to find compassion, grace and love in the midst of so much pain touched me deeply. Their capacity to forgive – particularly so soon after the traumatic event – is hard for many of us to understand. What can we learn from their forgiveness? On Yom Kippur, we come together as a community and spend twenty-five hours asking for forgiveness. -
History on Television
HISTORY ON TELEVISION ANN GRAY and ERIN BELL HISTORY ON TELEVISION In recent years non-fiction history programmes have flourished on television. This interdisciplinary study of history programming identifies and examines different genres employed by producers and tracks their commissioning, production, marketing and distribution histories. With comparative references to other European nations and North America, the authors focus on British history programming over the last two decades and analyse the relationship between the academy and media professionals. They outline and discuss often-competing discourses about how to ‘do’ history and the underlying assumptions about who watches history programmes. History on Television considers recent changes in the media landscape, which have affected to a great degree how history in general, and whose history in particular, appears onscreen. Through a number of case studies, using material from interviews by the authors with academic and media professionals, the role of the ‘professional’ historian and that of media professionals – commissioning editors and producer/directors – as mediators of historical material and interpretations is analysed, and the ways in which the ‘logics of television’ shape historical output are outlined and discussed. Building on their analysis, Ann Gray and Erin Bell ask if history on television fulfils its potential to be a form of public history through offering, as it does, a range of inter- pretations of the past originating from, or otherwise including, those not based in the academy. Through consideration of the representation, or absence, of the diversity of British identity – gender, ethnicity and race, social status and regional identities – the authors substantially extend the scope of existing scholarship into history on television.
