Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014

Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014

1305 Royal Avenue  Simi Valley, CA 93065 Sunday June 8, 2014

The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection:

And suddenly there came a sound from , as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2‐4]

Christ had promised His Apostles that He would sent His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day.

That is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It's interesting to note that St. Peter, the first , was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff). Dear friends,

After 15 years of dedicated service here at St. Rose of Lima Parish, both as our Youth Minister and then as our Director of Religious Education, Kim Costa has decided to retire due to health issues. On behalf of the entire parish, I want to thank Kim for her many years of service and to wish her well in her retirement.

I also wanted to inform you that the parish has hired Sandi Lemos as our new Director of Religious Education. She has been a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima since 1970. She learned her Catholic Faith through our parish’s Religious Education and youth ministry programs. Sandi and her husband George were married at St. Rose of Lima in 1987 and their five children have grown up and received all of their Sacraments in this parish.

At the age of sixteen, she began teaching preschool classes on Sunday mornings with her mother here at St. Rose. That experience planted the desire to share her faith with others. Through the years, she has participated in the Religious Education Confirmation, the Women’s Fellowship, Bible Studies, and the Respect Life programs, and she and her family volunteered every year for the parish carnival.

For the last six years, Sandi has been in store management with a national retail chain. All these experiences will bring a fresh new perspective to this position.

I am overjoyed to have Sandi join our team and I know that we will be blessed with the gift of her faith and her leadership. May God bless her and all of you.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph

Pentecost Sunday/End of School Year Pentecost Sunday commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. Dear Lord,

We light a candle and enjoy the flickering light, the fragrance and warmth it creates. But without the spark that ignites, there will be no flame. Without the wax, the source of power, the wick will not burn. Without the flame, there will be no fragrance, no warmth, no light. And so with us, Lord, You are the catalyst that ignites us and the fuel that sustains us. You fill us with your fragrance as you enter our lives. You empower us to carry your flame in our hearts, To be the fragrance, warmth and light of your love In this dark world.

Amen.
